Little Girl, I Say to You, Arise! SAINT BONAVENTURE CHURCH 13TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME | JUNE 27, 2021 As Christian stewards, our mission is to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all people through word, sacrament, service and community life. Little girl, I say to you, arise! Mark 5:41 Page two 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time Pastor's corner Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On this 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time, the Gospel Reading contains the cure of two seriously ill individuals. The daughter of Jairus, the synagogue official, was at the point of death and a woman had been afflicted with hemorrhages for twelve years. Can you imagine how frantic and anxious this father felt? His beloved daughter was dying and everyone around him was telling him to get ready for her death. Was this the same synagogue official who had scolded Jesus for curing on the sabbath? (See Luke 13:10-17) If so, did he remember that Jesus had cured the woman who had been unable to stand erect for eighteen years? The synagogue official searched for Jesus, and when he found him, begged him to come cure his dying daughter. While on his way, a woman who had been hemorrhaging for twelve years pushed through the crowd around Jesus and touched his cloak. Her flow of blood dried up and she felt cured. Has that ever happened to you? You were sick for a long time but finally started feeling better? Did you feel relief, joy, and many other emotions? This woman, who was now cured, heard Jesus say, “Who touched my clothes?” She became fearful. Had she done something wrong? Is he going to punish her? Is he going to make her suffer again? Please, no. She fell before Jesus and told him her story. Instead of scolding her, Jesus said, “Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be cured of your affliction.” Then people from the synagogue official’s house arrived and told him his daughter had died and do not bother Jesus anymore. So much for helping this father deal with the death of his daughter. However, Jesus did not abandon this distraught father. He told Jairus, “Do not be afraid; just have faith.” They went to the house of the synagogue official, where Jesus was ridiculed for saying that the little girl was not dead but asleep. He entered the girl’s room with her father, mother, as well as Peter, James, and John. Jesus held the child’s hand and said, “Little girl, arise!” The girl arose immediately and walked around. Jesus told the parents not to tell anyone about the cure and give her something to eat. The Greek word used for “arise” (egeirein) is the same one used to describe resurrection from death, including the resurrection of Jesus. Also, keep in mind that the woman who had been hemorrhaging was considered unclean. Her condition prevented her from associating with people including her own family. Therefore, she was doubly suffering from physical pain as well as public humiliation and separation. Now that she was cured, she could return to her family and friends and give praise to God. We must remember that Jesus never abandons us. Call upon Jesus to bring you healing and strengthen your faith. Jesus also wants us to encourage our loved ones especially when they are suffering in mind, body, or soul. Ask the Lord Jesus to bring them healing and strengthen their faith. “Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be cured of your affliction” (Mark 5:34). I also pray for Father Quan Tran as he begins his new assignment on July 1 as Administrator of St. Hedwig Catholic Church in Los Alamitos. The response to today’s Psalm is, “Lord, in your great love, answer me.” I find this very appropriate. I have been doing a lot of praying during the “lock down time” of the last three months. We were ready to celebrate the opening of our church in March, only to be told to stay home. We have all been through so much. I was so happy when the Bishop offered to bless our newly retrofitted and renovated church on June 14. Originally this was going to be just a livestream Mass. Then with the help of the Bishops of California, including Bishop Vann, as well as Bishop Jaime Soto, a native son of Orange County and Bishop of Sacramento, we were allowed by the Governor to open our churches on June 14.

He studied and received a master's degree in chemistry at the University of Buenos Aires, but later decided to become a Jesuit priest and studied at the Jesuit seminary of Villa Devoto. He studied liberal arts in Santiago, Chile, and in 1960 earned a degree in philosophy from the Catholic University of Buenos Aires. Between 1964 and 1965 he was a teacher of literature and psychology at Inmaculada High School in the province of Santa Fe, and in 1966 he taught the same courses at the prestigious Colegio del Salvador in Buenos Aires. In 1967, he returned to his theological studies and was ordained a priest on December 13, 1969. After his perpetual profession as a Jesuit in 1973, he became master of novices at the Seminary of Villa Barilari in San Miguel. Later that same year, he was elected superior of the Jesuit province of Argentina and Uruguay. In 1980, he returned to San Miguel as a teacher at the Jesuit school, a job rarely taken by a former provincial superior.
