SAINT BONAVENTURE CHURCH THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST | JUNE 6, 2021 As Christian stewards, our mission is to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all people through word, sacrament, service and community life. Page two The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Pastor's corner Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, How shall I make a return to the Lord for all the good he has done for me? The cup of salvation I will take up, and I will call upon the name of the Lord. These verses are found in Psalm 116, which is today’s Responsorial Psalm. These are the verses I had on the holy card I gave out on June 14, 1980, the day of my ordination to the Priesthood. The next verses of the Psalm say it well: My vows to the Lord I will pay in the presence of all his people. The following day, June 15, I celebrated my First Mass here at St. Bonaventure. Again, the verses of this Psalm cry out: To you will I offer sacrifice of thanksgiving, and I will call upon the name of the Lord. After forty-one years, the verses of Psalm 116 are still at the heart of my vocation to the Priesthood. Today is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (traditionally called Corpus Christi). Today we celebrate the greatest gift our Lord Jesus Christ gave us—the gift of himself. At the Last Supper, taking unleavened bread, Jesus pronounced the words, “Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my Body, which will be given up for you.” Then taking the chalice of wine, he said, “Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my Blood, the Blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me.” At the words and actions of Jesus Christ, the Son of God who became man, these simple gifts of bread and wine become the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, to nourish and strengthen us. May the Preface at the beginning of today’s Eucharistic Prayer help us to enter into this most precious gift that our Lord has given us: It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Christ our Lord. For at the Last Supper with his Apostles, establishing for the ages to come the saving memorial of the Cross, he offered himself to you as the unblemished Lamb, the acceptable gift of perfect praise. Nourishing your faithful by this sacred mystery, you make them holy, so that the human race, bounded by one world, may be enlightened by one faith and united by one bond of charity. And so, we approach the table of this wondrous sacrament, so that, bathed in the sweetness of your grace, we may pass over to the heavenly realities here foreshadowed. Therefore, all creatures of heaven and earth sing a new song in adoration, and we, with all the host of Angels, cry out, and without end we acclaim: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts … June 6, 2021 Page three Parish Manager's update MONTHLY ADORATION Please pray for our diocesan priests this coming week as they attend Monday, June 7 a diocese-wide retreat.
