This is the final report of the project. By-catch is an important issue for the Atlantic fisheries overseen by ICCAT because of concerns about biodiversity and possible degradation of pelagic ecosystems. More than 300 species have been reported as by- catch at one time or another. This study had 4 work tasks. Briefly, Task 1 calls for a meta-database of reports and publications providing information about by- catch species from tuna and related fisheries. -

However, the commercially available fish ELISA kits have been developed using parvalbumin (PAV) or fish protein extracts from northern hemisphere fish species. This study, therefore, aims to develop an immunodiagnostic test for the detection and quantification of (commercially important) southern hemisphere fish residues in processed foods, by developing antibodies with broad species specificity for southern hemisphere fish species. In order to quantitatively estimate and rank the cross-reactivity between fish species, the cross-reactivity indices were developed using two model antibodies specific to fish parvalbumin (anti-cod PoAb and anti-carp MoAb). Compared with the crude extracts, improved correlation between the PAV content and the immunoreactivity of heated PAV was observed for both antibodies (i.e., R2=0.82 for the anti-cod PoAb and R2=0.55 for the anti-carp MoAb). There was a strong phylogenetic relationship, showing strong immunoreactivity amongst fish species from the order of Perciformes; and weak or no immunoreactivity amongst species from Salmoniformes, Ophiidiformes, Scombriformes, Scorpaeniformes, and Tetraodontiformes. -

ICCAT, 71(6): 2887-2899 (2015) UPDATED SPECIES LIST FOR BY-CATCH CAUGHT IN ICCAT FISHERIES 1 Paul de Bruyn1 and Carlos Palma SUMMARY The number of species being reported to the ICCAT secretariat is increasing annually due to an increased focus on by-caught species. As such it has been necessary to revise and update the ICCAT list of species to accommodate these changes as well as to take into account updated taxonomic revisions. This document provides an updated list of by-catch species along with associated reporting codes. It is the intention of the ICCAT Secretariat for the Standing Committee on Ecosystems and By-catch to discuss the revisions and approve and official list for use in the ICCAT statistical databases. RÉSUMÉ Le nombre d’espèces déclarées au Secrétariat de l’ICCAT augmente chaque année en raison de l'attention accrue accordée aux espèces de prises accessoires. Par conséquent, il s'est avéré nécessaire de réviser et d'actualiser la liste des espèces de l'ICCAT afin de refléter ces changements et de tenir compte des révisions taxonomiques mises à jour. Ce document contient une liste mise à jour des espèces de prises accessoires ainsi que de leurs codes de déclaration.
