+++ PRESS RELEASE INDOOR MEETING Karlsruhe 2019 +++ Shining silver at the INDOOR MEETING Karlsruhe Kristin Gierisch and Fabian Heinle promise great jumps Philipp Schätzle Light athletics fans certainly love remembering the European Championship this Telefon: 0721 782045-260 summer in Berlin. The German athletes also thrilled the spectators at this highest level E-Mail: [email protected] of sport. The INDOOR MEETING Karlsruhe will continue to be this thrilling. It’s th celebrating its 35 Meeting this year, making it the indoor meeting with the longest Karlsruhe, 5. Dezember 2018 tradition in Europe. Sports Director Alain Blondel is giving it a new shine, aligning the sports disciplines to the German athletes’ success at the continental title matches: “Of course we make sure that we can present medal winners at the INDOOR MEETING. Among other things, we’ve got the Women’s Triple Jump, Men’s Long Jump, but also the Men’s High Jump in the programme. We’ve also included the Women’s Sprint Hurdles.” There is great enthusiasm for the light athletics spectacle on 2 February 2019 in trade-fair hall 3. “The run on the tickets is massive – now, two months before the INDOOR MEETING, we only have just under 500 tickets available. Category 1 is almost completely sold out”, says a delighted Martin Wacker, manager of the organisers: Karlsruhe Marketing und Event GmbH. “The IAAF World Indoor Tour, with Karlsruhe as its second stop, certainly gives us a great advantage. It was the right step to increase the capacity to 5,000 seats.” Traditionally, the time to present the top athletes at the INDOOR MEETING starts on St Nicholas Day. -

(Photo: @TaFPhoto) Aliphine Tuliamuk, Molly Seidel, and Sally Kipyego earn spots on the U.S. Olympic marathon team 1 On Saturday in Atlanta, Aliphine Tuliamuk, Molly Seidel, and Sally Kipyego ran their way onto the Olympic Team by going 1–2–3 in the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. I thought Sarah Lorge Butler put it perfectly in this article for Runner’s World, when she called the top three “completely unexpected and utterly logical at the same time.” I still think Seidel making the team is slightly illogical, but I’ll explain later. There were so many excellent marathoners in contention, it was inevitable that some excellent runners would be left off the team. But for Jordan Hasay, Sara Hall, Emily Sisson, Molly Huddle, Des Linden, and Kellyn Taylor to all be left off, that’s the surprise. How it went down The race went out slowly, relatively speaking, with most of the 444 starters right together through the first mile, which the leaders hit in 6:13. The biggest development in the first mile, as far as I know, is that Kaitlin Goodman went down and got trampled. She got back in the race, but her injuries ultimately took her out of the race shortly before halfway, and it’s frustrating that she never got to test her fitness on this stage. -
Maximal Time Spent at Vo2max from Sprint to the Marathon

We tested the hypothesis that VO2max can be elicited in both the sprint and marathon distances and that the fraction of time spent at VO2max is not significantly different between distances. Methods: Seventy-eight well-trained males (mean [SD] age: 32 [13]; weight: 73 [9] kg; height: 1.80 [0.8] m) performed the University of Montreal Track Test using a portable respiratory gas sampling system to measure a baseline VO2max. Each participant ran one or two different distances (100 m, 200 m, 800 m, 1500 m, 3000 m, 10 km or marathon) in which they are specialists. Results: VO2max was elicited and sustained in all distances tested. The time limit (Tlim) at VO2max on a relative scale of the total time (Tlim at VO2max%Ttot) during the sprint, middle-distance, and 1500 m was not significantly different (p > 0.05). -
