NIAGARA FALLS BY: HURIYA AND LAMAR FROM GRADE 7 - Was formed starting more than 12 000 years ago at the end of the Ice Age. - Year after year, the formation continues with the annual freezing and thawing of the Niagara River. H I S T O R Y - Native Americans living in the region were most likely the first people to behold of the power of Niagara Falls. - Niagara Falls was discovered by French explorer, Father Louis Hennepin in December. A N N I E E D S O N T A Y L O R Mrs. Annie Edson became the first woman to challenge the Niagara Falls in a barrel and come out alive. On October 24th, 1901, her 63rd birthday, she rode her barrel over Niagara Falls. She was a schooteacher in Bay City, Michigan weighing 160 pounds. She came to Niagara Falls seeking fame and fortune. The barrel was filled with padding and a small mattress, and the lid was sealed into place. She then rode off Niagara Falls with her cat. THE THREE WATERFALLS H O R S E S H O E F A L L S Horseshoe Falls is one of the three waterfalls at Niagara Falls. It’s 3 000-foot (900-meter) crest makes it the name Horseshoe Falls as the crest might remind you of a Horseshoe. Horseshoe Falls is about 790 m (2 590 ft) wide making it the largest waterfall in Niagara Falls. Horseshoe Falls is the biggest and most popular waterfall in Niagara Falls. A M E R I C A N F A L L S American Falls is one of the three waterfalls at Niagara Falls. The American Falls is about 260 meters (850 feet). American Falls is the American side of Niagara Falls. It is the second largest waterfall in Niagara Falls after Horseshoe Falls. B R I D A L V E I L F A L L S Bridal Veil Falls is one of the three waterfalls at Niagara Falls. Bridal Veil Falls is about 15 meters (50 feet) making it the smallest out of all three waterfalls. Its name derives from the veil-like appearance of the fall when the area's frequent winds blow the mist sideways. E F F E C T I O N O N C A N A D A Niagara Falls is an enormously popular tourist destination, and it also serves as a major source of electricity for Ontario. The city is connected to the U.S. side of the falls by several bridges. The main reason why people visit Niagara Falls is because of the breath-taking beauty of the waterfalls. Everything about it is fascinating and people find it very amusing. There are many things to do at Niagara Falls making it even more fun to visit.
