Introduction China’s iGeneration Cinema: Dispersion, Individualization and Post-WTO Moving Image Practices Keith B. Wagner, Tianqi Yu with Luke Vulpiani Chinese cinema is moving beyond the theatrical screen. While the country is now the world’s second-largest film market in addition to being the world’s second-largest economy, visual culture in China is increasingly multi-platform and post-cinematic.1 Digital technology, network-based media and portable media player platforms have contributed to the creation of China’s new cinema of dispersion or ‘iGeneration cinema,’ which is oriented as much toward individual, self-directed viewers as toward traditional distribution channels such as the box office, festival, or public spaces. Visual culture in China is no longer dominated by the technology and allure of the big screen, if indeed it ever was. While China’s film industry still produces ‘traditional’ box-office blockbusters and festival-ready documentaries, their impact and influence is increasingly debatable. -

CULTURAL GOVERNANCE IN CONTEMPORARY CHINA: POPULAR CULTURE, DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY, AND THE STATE BY LUZHOU LI DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communications and Media in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2015 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Emeritus John Nerone, Chair Assistant Professor Amanda Ciafone Professor Emeritus Dan Schiller Professor Kent Ono, University of Utah ii ABSTRACT This dissertation is a study of the historical formation and transformation of the Chinese online audiovisual industry under forces of strategic political calculations, expanding market relations, and growing social participation, and the cultural ramifications of this process, especially the kind of transformations digital technologies have wrought on the state-TV-station-centered mode of cultural production/distribution and regulatory apparatuses. Through this case, the project aims to theorize the changing mode of cultural governance of post-socialist regimes in the context of digital capitalism. Using mixed methods of documentary research, interviews with industry practitioners, participant observations of trade fairs/festivals, and critical discourse analyses of popular cultural texts, the study finds that the traditional broadcasting and the online video sectors are structured along two different political economic mechanisms. While the former is dominated by domestic capital and heavily regulated by state agencies, the latter is supported by transnational capital and less regulated. Digital technologies coupled with transnational capital thus generate new cultural flows, processes, and practices, which produces a heterogeneous and contested cultural sphere in the digital environment that substantially differs from the one created by traditional television. -

Based on primary sources and interviews conducted by the author, it identifies the factors that, at different times, led Chinese scrap dealers and recyclers to extend the scope of their professional activity beyond the borders of their home country. Drawing on recent scholarship in discard studies, the author argues that it is necessary to move beyond the environmental dumping narrative in order to better understand Chinese national policy and its implications. This narrative serves as the main official justification for the bans on imports of recyclable waste that the central government adopted in recent years. However, there is good reason to believe that, by adopting a highly restrictive stance on the international waste trade, the central government sought first and foremost to bolster the municipal solid waste management sector within China. -

Political Satire in the Chinese Blogosphere: the Case of Wang Xiaofeng
Sociology Study, December 2014, Vol. 4, No. 12, 1016‐1041 D doi: 10.17265/2159‐5526/2014.12.004 DAVID PUBLISHING Political Satire in the Chinese Blogosphere: The Case of Wang Xiaofeng Hai Tanga Abstract This paper is built on the study of one key blog—Wang Xiaofeng’s No Guess (2006‐2011) to explore how a Chinese intellectual uses his satirical skills in the blogosphere, how his blog reshapes the form of political culture, and how the blogosphere through such interventions proceeds in the development of political communications in China. Two key issues are addressed in the paper. Firstly, drawing on the concept of “blogging culture”, the author argues that blogging has potentially reconfigured political information around people’s everyday lives, offering alternative modes of “public talk”. The case of Wang Xiaofeng shows that satire can be used to make fun of the state, policies, and established ideologies, improving a previously restricted communicative environment toward more open. Secondly, the rise in the value placed on individualism in China, and the rise of peer‐to‐peer media mean that bloggers who pursue self‐expression simultaneously through such self‐expression. In other words, Wang Xiaofeng’s No Guess blog demonstrates that individual opinions across the blogosphere have implicitly challenged political discourse; however, they always have to struggle with an ongoing censorship, negotiate an unstable discursive space and thus, can only enjoy a limited success. Short stories, novellas, and feature films will be examined against the backdrop of the Cultural Revolution, the Tiananmen Square massacre, the new wave cinema, the 1980s root-searching movement, and the emerging digital culture that rewrites the traditional concept of creativity and literacy. Representative works includes literary, cinematic, and digitally based works from mainland China. *046 and 192 are the same course. Minors in Chinese should sign up for 192 if you want to use this course to fulfill a minor’s requirement. Students who have had no background in Mandarin Chinese should sign up for 046. This is a HASS CI course. The amount of writing required is 5,000 words or more. Two short papers (4 pages, approximately 1,200 words for one, and 5 pages, approximately 1,430 words for another ), plus a final paper 12 pages minimum (approximately 2,370 words), are required. Students will have the opportunity to revise one paper. Students’ oral communications skills will also be developed through student presentations, class debates, and student-led discussions with feedback from the professor.
