I, Bernard Major III, of the county of Surry VA, etc. devise and bequeath to my wife Mary - my house and land north of the Stage Rd leading from Norfolk to Petersburg, on which I now reside, for and during her natural life with all the appurtenances thereto belonging and at her death it is my will and desire that the above mentioned land, etc., should descend to my child, Bernard Major IV the son of my present wife, to his and heirs forever. I leave to my wife, Mary the following slaves, to wit, Billy, Claiborne, Charles, Lewis, Benjamin, Mary and Rachael for and during natural life and at her death to my son Bernard Major IV, the son of my present wife.

Secondly: I give to my child Bernard Major IV, the son of my Mary, an infant of tender years, my land called "Simmons" lying on the south side of the above mentioned road and one other tract adjoining the said tract of land called "Daniels", which I lately purchased of Mark Booth, to him and his heirs forever. I give and bequeath to my aforesaid child Bernard the following slaves, to wit, Anthony, Philip, Peter, Eoulous, Hannah, Anacha, Martha, to him to and to his heirs forever and I also give my son Bernard the foreman, Tom, to him and his heirs forever. Should my son Bernard Major IV, die before he arrives at the age of twenty-one years I give and bequeath the land and slaves to this clause of my will to William Major West, the son of Mrs. Sarah Cryer, to him and his heirs forever. I also will and desire that the land and slaves mentioned in the first clause of my will, which I have loaned to my wife Mary during her natural life and at her death to my son Bernard Major IV, should in case of the death of my son Bernard before he comes to the age of 21 years, be equally divided between Samuel Major Harwood, the eldest son of Samuel Major Harwood of the County of Charles City County and the surviving children of my deceased sister Joyce Hill, By her last husband Turner Hill and the surviving children of my sister Betsy Hill by her husband James Hill, share alike, to them and theirs forever.

Thirdly I give to my Son William Major West, the tract of land on the south side of Governor's Road comprising 200 acres or less, being a part of my tract of land called "SImmons" and separated from the land heretofore bequeathed to my son Bernard by that name, by Governor's Road, to him and heirs forever. I also give and bequeath to my son William Major West the following slaves, to wit, Frank and Pleasant, to him and his heirs forever.

I wish and desire that all my just debts should be speedily, and as soon after my death as my executors advisably can do so, discharged and to carry fully into effect this desire, I direct that the following property should be sold, to wit, tract of land on the south side of Cypress swamp, comprising 150 acres more or less called " Swanthans" and another tract of land comprising 58 acres which I purchased from John Burgess, deceased, all of my personal estate, and the crops which may be seeded at the time of my death . I also direct that the outstanding debts to me by bond or otherwise be collected as soon as possible by my executors, and appropriated as far as required to the discharges of my debts and the residue, together with the balance of the amount arising from the sales heretofore directed of land and other personal property appropriated to the use benefit the education of my son and infant, Bernard Major IV. It is my wish and desire that my executors spare no expense in the education of my son Bernard major IV consistently with the profits of the estate I have devised and bequeathed him, and request that they attend particularly to his morals and in the early part of his life.

I also appoint my friend David Booth my other executor, and confide to his prudence and friendship to counsel and protect my children. I request that security be not required by the court of these executors.

It has been suggested that the mother of William Major West indicated in the above will, Sarah Cryer was born Sarah West. Unfortunately, the Majors and the Wests came from across the James River in Charles City County, which lost most of its records during the War between the States.

The following notes from pages 20 and 21 of Some Wills from the Burned Counties of Virginia and Other Wills not listed in Virginia Wills and Administrations 1632-1800 by William Lindsay Hopkins, Richmond Virginia. 1987 make direct connection between the Wests and Majors. 1 found a copy of this document in January 2004 at the Greenville County Library in, Greenville,SC. As the Story goes:

Bernard Major III and Sarah West were divorced shortly after the birth of William. William was raised by his maternal relatives and took the name "WEST". A record of marriage between Bernard and Sarah has not been located, however, he is acknowledged in the will of Bernard Major III as being his son and the son of Mrs. Sarah (West) Cryer, Sarah later married William Cryer.

William Major West may have died at the dinner table on December 25, 1865. His estate was not filed until January 1866, see Surry County VA Order Book 1862-1877, Page 113. NOTE: The New Testament Bible of Sarah Rebecca West states WMW died 11-19-1863 at 1:00 AM.

Most of the pages came out quite well. a couple were all black. The names are real interesting. Dawson Warren is a cousin thru Lucy Caroline Warren, Benjamin C Bell is the uncle of Sarah (Sally) Bell who was married to Jesse Phillips Warren parents of Lucy Caroline Warren . William Bailey could be kin through the fact that Stephen West's first wife was a Sarah Bailey ( this I found in misc. records of Surry Co) I received 17 pages total is this about right pages 4,16,17 were either black or no writting Thanks so much .

I went to the archives and did some more research and found federal doc. that verified Samuel Edwin West was in the 5th Va Cav. then discharged to go back as deputy sherriff then re-enlisted a year later in the 13th Va Cav ( the 5th Va Cav. had dissolved in 62 ) but in the companies 5th and 13th that he was in, it is very strange, both companies there is hardly anything known about them , like those two companies were either not paid for by the Confedreate Gov. or they were spy units so the men were not listed . The two companies do not list any military action it is like they only existed on paper.

He was a Sheriff who the Andy Griffin series Mayberry RFD could have been adapted from his life. He did not carry a gun except in the car glove compartment and did not feel a need to use force. He was defeated in the 1939 election by four votes and even though many of his friends informed him that the election had been not on the up and up, he refused to demand a recount, saying "the people have spoken." He came to the aid of several county citizens who had brushes with the law, and induced other law officials to release them into his custody, returning them to the county where they never broke the law again.

Served in WW I with the USA Signal Corps, was stationed at General Pershing's Headquarters in France. He and a Private North, who was from Kansas (a Kansas state checker champion), were in charge of 14 female French telephone operators. I, William L. West, Jr. never beat him playing a game of checkers - GREAT CHECKER PLAYER. He served in the VA Army National Guard and was a 2nd Lt. before resigning, about 1937. In later years he stated " He just got tired of no promotions."

Ena Christinea was born March 22, 1908 to Wiley Floyd Hackler and Caudie Belmouth Ayers Hackler in Roanoke, Virginia. She had two older brothers Klyne Reginald Hackler and Odell Floyd Hackler. Years later her parents adopted their two year old granddaughter, following the tragic accidental death of Peggy's mother. The prominent Roanoke family resided at 315 Day Avenue S. W. and raised their family there. The house remained lived in by Caudie Hackler until it was demolished after her death on September 21, 1969. Wiley Floyd Hackler owned an automobile dealership. Ena completed Penn Hall Junior College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. She married J. Herbert West August 7, 1929 in the First Baptist Church of Roanoke. Their son Jay Herbert West was born the next year. J. Herbert worked for Henebee's Jewelry Store and later sold Quaker State Oil. Joining the U.S. army in 1941, J. Herbert was stationed at Raritan Arsenal in Metuchen, New Jersey. His assignment was that of financial officer. While in service their daughter Ena Clynch West was born on March 20, 1946 at nearby Camp Kilmer. After his honorable discharge from the service the family moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina where J. Herbert established West Construction Company. They joined the First Baptist Church of Winston-Salem and were faithful members until the Knollwood Baptist Church was formed. The West family were charter members and very active in all aspects of their suburban church. For many Christmases Ena and Herbert entertained at their home women who were in an alcohol rehabilitation center with a festive party of food and singing Christmas carols. Ena's strength was being true to herself and her values. Her family was central to her life. She embraced her husband's large family as her own and cared for those who had health concerns. Ena enjoyed her home and her garden which was planted with many camellias, her favorite flower. She collected dolls and each one was dressed appropriate to their period. Routine housework and cooking did not interest her and she relied on paid help for those chores. One of her greatest pleasures was the Sewing Club, whose members remained constant and long-time friends. Ena was talented in all kinds of needlework, although I don't recall her doing any quilting. Her tailoring was of professional quality and she made her daughter and granddaughter beautifully detailed dresses. A brunette with hazel eyes, Ena was a very feminine lady who dressed tastefully in becoming soft colors, occasionally navy blue and never black. She had a sense of humor, was flexible, her outlook was optimistic, and she was strong and supportive. J Herbert died November 10, 1976. Ena remained in their home at 1922 Greenbrier Road, Winston-Salem. In the early 1980's she developed Parkinson's disease and later Alzheimer's. She was tended loyally by her daughter until her death August 11, 1990 at 82 years. A memorial service was held at Knollwood Baptist Church and her cremains were buried alongside her husband's at the Lawne's Creek Parish Church Cemetary in Bacon's Castle, Surry County, Virginia. Her survivors were her son Jay Herbert West and his wife Beverly, her daughter Ena Stackhouse, her sister Peggy Hackler, four grandchildren Thomas, Courtney and James West, and David Stackhouse and eight great-grandchildren. The ninth grandchild was born 17 days after her death.
