We danced the Beginner version of The Daffodil Dance in spiritual support of Marie Curie Cancer Support.” Bloomin’ Lovely

Hooligan’s Line Dancing Club from Preston, Lancashire pulled on their boots for the Daffodil Dance. Sheila Walmsley told us: “We all had such a great time. It was fantastic to see everyone having so much fun dancing and raising money for such a worthy cause.” Dancers donated cakes for a cake stall and local traders provided prizes for a raffl e. Sheila added: “We raised £400 and I would like to thank everyone involved.” Dancer Rosa Butler told us: “My Line dance classes have all taken part in the Daffodil Dance in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care this month. I chose the easier dance, Heavenly Too, so that everyone could be involved and we decided we preferred the music Moving On Up by M People.” A cheque for £220 has been sent to their local Marie Curie Hospice in Liverpool. Rosa added: “I would like to thank all the dancers from Abbey View Community Centre, The Millennium Centre, Manweb Social Club and All Saints Church Hall who took part. Some of them came to more than one class and willingly got involved each time. I’ve now put my daffodil wellies away until next year.”

JOEY & RORY.indd 1 24/4/09, 10:52:41 am everything we already felt-- that God pointed us in this direction on purpose--and she put her stamp of approval on it.”

So what did the audience and judges consider was so special about these two talented individuals as a country duo? First they look totally authentic. Rory is rarely parted from his overalls while Joey, who would look wonderful however she dressed, is most comfortable in wrangler jeans, belt buckles and boots. But looks aside, they harmonize beautifully, and the chemistry and sense of intimacy between the two made the listeners want to be part of their world. Add heartfelt lyrics that tell stories related to everyday life and feelings and the two soon became fan favorites. ‘Cheater, Cheater’, the song they performed on ‘Original Song Night’ on the show, became an internet phenomenon.

Their debut album release ‘The Life of a Song’ is a country enthusiast/Line dancer’s dream. Seven of the songs are co-written by this talented couple drawing on their life experiences. I couldn’t resist writing a dance to ‘Play The Song’. This was the song they used to audition for the TV show and which took them into the competition. .

So what does the future hold for this talented and down to earth duo? “We really don’t know, but we do know that we are extremely excited to be out there having our shot in the country music world and trying to record and present our style of music to listeners. We believe that there is still a huge hole that we’d like to fi ll in the traditional sounding format of country music.”

And what about line dance? As Rory explains, “Joey loves to Line dance and used to go out dancing all the time, but doesn’t have much time to anymore. The roles have been reversed and she’s doing the singing now and watching others dance. But don’t get us wrong, you just might catch her jump off the stage in the middle of a song and join in!”

and it shows that if we keep our beginner classes full and give to new dancers, class numbers stay up. I also noticed that many of the more advanced dancers attend the classes at all levels to give support to the new dancers. This was echoed by instructors who are very supportive of one another.

I attended and taught at classes instructed by Darlene Miller, Margaret Koll, Rose Knosp, Carol Simmons and Lola Miller. These ladies were all terrific, caring, funny as anything and totally dedicated to Line dance. I visited with Bill Ray who teaches with wife Violet, both well known choreographers.

Of course, I got to attend Jean’s classes. Jean is tireless and it seems to me that she rarely sleeps! Her warmth, enthusiasm and patience obviously endear her to her dancers and she always has time to go over steps and have a little chat.

So you would like to dance in The Villages? Well, to attend the classes in the Recreation Centres you have to live or rent (lots of holiday rentals particularly in the winter months) in The Villages or come as a guest. However, as a non- resident you can register in one of the Line dance classes offered by the College of Life Long Learning at a very reasonable cost, you can dance on the Squares and you can register for the Line Dance Festival. There are hotels in The Villages if you want to stay overnight. You can also check out the website www.thevillages.com to see about other opportunities for trying out life at The Villages. I’m hooked for sure!!! 37

We hold our dances every six weeks and wish there were more weeks in the year to accommodate all the worthy causes we are asked to help.” She added: “We normally shun publicity, but in this case the dancers deserve praise and recognition for their ten years of dedicated charity fund raising. Thanks so much for Linedancer Magazine, which, I have no doubt, is the prime instrument in keeping Line dancing alive and kicking. Keep up the excellent work.” You too Anna. Ed. Attitude, Good Or Bad?

I am interested in any responses from your readers. I recently held a Line dance day attended by 160 people. We had a dance fl oor with plenty of room to split the fl oor

letter into four if necessary. I left sheets on tables for people's comments, good or bad, so I can improve the event if R needed. One comment really bothered me, it read: "People should not get on the fl oor if they do not know the dances.

We go to classes to learn, not social events.” What a poor # attitude. There was plenty of room for every level of dancer. This could easily put off a new dancer for good. ST Ellyn Lynda`s Stompers

As a Beginner I started to understand how these could be fi tted together to form different dances. I enjoyed what I could achieve, whilst looking forward to doing better. In modern parlance I became an Improver (I improved) and reached Intermediate level (became quite good). BTL June.indd 78 24/4/09, 12:15:27 pm Linedancer Magazine has a thriving message board and in this column we will be featuring a selection of topics and information which have been posted recently Anticipation We anticipate enjoying a dance but it is frustrating anticipating a dance and not being able to fi nd the music. I was checking out dances today and liked the look of a new one but no music is to be found because the album is not released yet. I love Jo Thompson’s dances so I looked at of Love and yes the music is available but the step sheet looks like a NASA rocket instruction and its classed as Beginner/Intermediate but full of Bota Fogos and Voltas both ways not to mention samba walks. When did choreography get so diffi cult? I am sure it is not so hard to do once you realise what it is you are supposed to be doing so I will have to wait until Jo puts it on a video - more anticipation. The last time I told everyone to do a bota fogo to the right, they laughed! So think I will go teach One Step Forward.

Saturation Point Is it my imagination or are there more new dances being released weekly than ever before? One at a time please is the vote from my dancers. I’m told I am teaching too many, trying to keep up with the rest. Please stop banging them out. Give us a chance to learn them and perish the thought - remembering them. robert wanstreet.indd 1 24/4/09, 12:26:48 pm It takes a special sort of person to be able to make their dream a reality. Maureen Jessop introduces the one widely accredited for introducing Line dance in France, Robert Wanstreet.

Bob’s, an authentic Country Western Saloon! Robert is organising the 15th anniversary This was to play a big part in the development of Line dance and our first International of the dance. It was here that more and more people were introduced to the dance and thus our image of the lone dancer takes shape.

Being an authentic American has greatly helped Robert’s renown. That American belief in oneself is still there beneath the surface and has driven Robert from being a simple social dancer to the teacher trainer and Southern European director for NTA. His musical training and eye for detail makes him an excellent teacher and demonstration choreographer. His sense of humour makes him a good MC. With his charismatic personality he is a natural leader. Generally, what Robert says, goes. He has competed, judged and was a UCWDC festival director.

Today, forging ahead and following the latest trends, he is in great demand all over France to teach workshops and train teachers. His weekly class in Paris is principally based on improving technique for advanced dancers. He welcomes the immerging come back of couples dance in France especially his favourites, 2-step and West Coast Swing.

As he travels the country, he marvels at the number of people who have become ‘hooked on country’ Many are direct descendants of those early Parisian days. Robert has also influenced many younger teachers who see him as a role model. I think he doesn’t really realize just what his dream has brought to people in their everyday lives, how dancing has helped them overcome difficulties, bad health, loneliness, or stress. So many people have discovered hidden talents in teaching, performing, leadership and organisation. Many others have made new friends, fallen in love, had children, travelled, competed through the dance.
