KIM GAVIN Creative Director Biog 2019 Copy 3 Kim Gavin Widely acknowledged as one of the UK’s leading talents in the field of stage direc8on, choreography and crea8ve vision. This highly sought a?er Brit and BAFTA Award winning director has been the crea8ve force behind some of the most spectacular visions seen by audiences worldwide. Kim Gavin grew up in Bournemouth and trained at the Royal Ballet School. He followed a successful career as a dancer on television and in the theatre, before turning his ability towards choreography and stage direcon. It was in 1992 whilst working as a choreographer on the BBC’s Royal Variety Performance, that Kim first met Take That. Working on their sell- out arena shows introduced him into the world of live events. Over the last 20 years, Kim has been the crea?ve vision behind some of the most innova?ve and inspira?onal performances in music and live events. He is now widely recognised as one of the UK's leading Crea?ve Directors, working with some the world’s biggest ar?sts on TV spectacu- lars and record-breaking stadium shows. In 1997 Kim Directed and Choreographed the 70’s musical “Oh! What A Night”, starring Kid Creole. It opened with fantas?c reviews to a sell out season at the Blackpool Opera House, followed by Manchester Opera House (1998 & 2000), London Apollo, UK Na?onal Tour 2001 / 2003. Sydney, Melbourne & Hamburg also in 2003. Kim has contributed crea?vely to an impressive list of hugely popular TV shows and live events including; Mobo Awards, Golden Jubilee ‘Party At The Palace’, ‘Concert for Diana’ at Wembley Stadium, ‘The Royal Variety Show’ ‘Children In Need Rocks The Albert Hall’, ‘Help For Heroes Con- cert’ and the ‘Invictus Games’ Opening Ceremony Kim has worked alongside many greats including, Westlife, Pink, Lulu, Robbie Williams, Anastacia, world famous ballerina Darcey Bussell and opera singer Katherine Jenkins, ader conceiving, direc?ng and choreo- graphing the live O2 show, ‘Viva La Diva’. He was the crea?ve brain be- hind the breath-taking performance by gold medalists Torvill & Dean on ITV’s ‘Dancing on Ice – a 25 year celebra?on of the Bolero dance’. In 2011, Kim was appointed as Ar?s?c Director for the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and has since re- ceived cri?cal acclaim for his part in Britain’s highest profile event this century. At the start of 2015, Kim worked with Ant & Dec, as Crea?ve Director for the opening of The Brits Awards. He has also con?nued his longstanding rela?onship with Take That, as Ar?s?c Director for their UK and Eu- ropean tours. In September 2015, Kim was Crea?ve Director for the Opening Ceremony of the Rugby World Cup, seng the tone for what was to be a ground- breaking tournament. In 2016, Kim was Director of ‘The Sessions – A Live Re-Staging of The Beatles at Abbey Road Studios’, a striking cung-edge, immersive show that tells the Beatles story like never done before. October 2016, saw Kim as Director of the In?missimi On Ice show ‘One Amazing Day’, a unique ice show where opera, pop music, figure ska?ng and fashion all merged to create a spectacular show, in the stunning seng of the Arena di Verona. Towards the end of 2016, Kim was Performance Director on the BBC1 Saturday night entertainment show ‘Let It Shine’. In 2017, Kim was Show Producer for Take That’s first ever ‘in-the-round’ tour. Kim conceived and designed this show alongside Take That, and the tour received rave reviews such as ‘bonkers but beau?ful’ (Birmingham Mail), ‘flaming carnival of pop’ (The Guardian) and ‘something to behold’ (Telegraph). Kim was director of The Band musical that made its worldwide debut in September 2017. This show broke box office records as the fastest selling UK theatre tour ever, and con?nues to wow audiences throughout the UK in 2019. November 2018, marked the opening of the Holiday on Ice 75th Anniver- sary show, directed by Kim. This breathtaking show is set to tour Europe unl 2020. This year also sees Kim back working alongside Take That as their ar?s?c director on the Take That Odyssey tour, a UK and European tour of their greatest hits. The last twelve months Kim has been working on a shows for the Sphere in Las Vegas and for Universal Crea?ve in Florida . The opening of the show in Florida is in the autumn of 2023. .

    Andrée Grau: Figure Skating and the Anthropology of Dance: The Case of Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin Figure Skating and the Anthropology of Dance: The Case of Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin Andrée Grau Roehampton University, [email protected] Abstract In this paper, I address a number of topics relevant to anthropology generally and to the anthropology of dance specifically. I consider issues of classification and taxonomies; of interculturalism and transnationalism; of representation, exoticisation and internalised racism. I examine dance, hierarchies and discrimination, and discuss boundaries between dance and non-dance. For example, dance scholars, with a few exceptions, rarely write about figure skating, although it is cognate to Western theatre dance genres, especially ballet. Figure skating is sport, even in its ice dancing incarnation, whilst dance is art even in its ballet competition incarnations. I use as a case study the Russian skaters Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin, who choreographed an ‘Australian Aboriginal Dance’ for their original routine for the 2010 European skating championships and Olympics. This offended Aboriginal elders who made a complaint to the Russian ambassador. I examine the controversy around the routine, how it was reported in the press and how the audience responded in Internet forums, focusing especially on the way Australian Aborigines con- tinue to be portrayed as stone age in popular media.     A Brief History of Ice Dancing By Cheryl Elton of www.IceDancers.com The ice dancing that you see on television today is much different from its ballroom roots. The set pattern ice dances, which originated from skaters trying to replicate ballroom dances on the ice, still form the foundation of the sport, yet were eliminated from all International Skating Union (ISU) competitions after the 2010 season. The 2010 World Figure Skating Championships was the last event to include a compulsory (pattern) dance – the Golden Waltz. People first experimented with dancing on ice in the mid-1800s. Skaters tried to follow the steps of ballroom dancing – thus both feet were on the ice most of the time. Jackson Haines, an American ballet dancer and figure skater, used his ballet training to create graceful programs and introduced the concept of skating to accompanying music. For these and other reasons, he is commonly referred to as ‘the father of modern figure skating.’ Haines danced on ice at an exhibition in Vienna in 1865, and a waltz bearing his name became popular in the 1880s. The Jackson Haines Waltz was originally a four-step repeating pattern of two steps forward and two steps backward in which the skater kept both feet on the ice throughout. In the late nineteenth century, Vienna was the dancing capital of Europe, and waltzing was the rage, both on and off the ice. A three-step waltz skated in Paris in the 1890s might be the direct predecessor of modern ice dancing, featuring the speed and flowing edges that we see today.

After competing at her first British Championships she moved to train at the City of Liverpool Gymnastics Club at the age of 12 where she trained under the watchful eye of her personal coach, Amanda Reddin.
