ITV’S DANCING ON ICE

We created a brand-new set for the latest series of ITV’s prime-time weekend show, Dancing on Ice. The dynamic set, designed by Dominic Tolfts, used lightboxes configured in swirls, arches and as edging to create a range different lighting effects and a sense of fast, flowing movement.

We’ve manufactured and installed a wide variety of sets and scenery in venues and TV studios across Europe; from large scale live shows such as Eurovision, to panel games and quizzes such as Countdown and University Challenge. Rather unusually, this set not only incorporated two ice rinks, but was also installed in a temporary structure in rural Hertfordshire. Working inside a temporary venue, rather than a studio brings challenges not only for set build but for broadcast too.

The Set Lightboxes lined the edge of the entire 31m by 14m oval rink and the large, multi-levelled main stage area was created from a range of stock and bespoke staging units. Lightboxes were also used to frame the top and bottom

Case Study © Stage One Creative Services Limited www.stageone.co.uk of the LED screens that formed the rear of the set, with narrow, curved sections swooping across the front of the screens. An 18m by 6m flown centrepiece was created from curved lightbox sections, interspersed with stretch fabric covered panels. This formed a swirling crown-like addition to the fast and flowing motif, further supplemented by six narrow arcs, also flown from the roof.

Celebrity contestants and their professional partners enter the show rink from the practice rink via a 12m long, 3.5m high lightbox tunnel. Manufactured in twenty individual sections, this feature created a dramatic entrance, the series of lightbox arches allowing for effects such as chasing light sequences.

Our workshop and on-site crew also created a bespoke desk for the judges as well as a presenters’ viewing gallery that overlooked the show rink and set.

Quality and Detail We’ve worked with designer Dominic Tolfts on numerous sets for television including BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year and ITV’s The Voice. For Dancing on Ice, our crew delivered top quality work, on time, despite high winds and the temporary closure of the site impacting on their schedule.
