As a process of change, how might somatically informed practice alter the perspectives of the dance artist and people living with Parkinson’s? As research practitioner, what can I learn about the relationship of dance to health through the creative process of one to one Dance and Parkinson’s practice? Valuing the person with Parkinson’s, the creative process, and the art form of dance, my thesis examines one to one, co-creative, and somatically informed dance practice. It aims to support health in people living with Parkinson’s and promote change in the perceptions of the dance artist and research participants. Through my Action research project ‘Home Performance’, shared dance practice creates embodied knowledge through which a new framework of one to one Dance and Parkinson’s practice emerges. My approach to practice is compared with the work of three eminent Dance and Parkinson’s artists from the United States and triangulated through Somatic inquiry. My methodology explores a Deleuzian informed feminist perspective which parallels Somatic theory and practice. Dance supports health in the whole person and changes perspectives in people with Parkinson’s through a shifting, unfolding, bio-psycho-social process. One to one practice is performative and intra-active, with explorative dance encounters connecting partners through spatial and haptic engagement in the home environment. A corporeal exchange, and means of promoting power-sharing relationships, the creative process of one to one Dance and Parkinson’s practice promotes health and alters perceptions through processes of change, connection, and flow. Parkinson's1 is a common neurological condition affecting more than ten million people worldwide. In 2018, approximately 145,00 people had a Parkinson’s diagnosis in the United Kingdom (UK).2 Parkinson’s is characterised by progressive degeneration of the central nervous system which affects neurons in the brain and causes widespread changes to motor function, cognition, mood and other non-motor symptoms.3 Altered motor behaviour often presents as tremor, freezing gait, and bradykinesia, where people experience a general slowing down of movement, with all symptoms increasing falls risk. People with Parkinson’s are more prone to falls and hip fractures because they have a lower bone mineral density than the general population (Critchley et al., 2015), a factor which advances morbidity and mortality rates in this population (Westheimer et al., 2015). Parkinson’s symptoms are particular to each person, with the condition concentrated in the older population, but increasingly prevalent in younger age groups. Yet, as a result of the disconnect between brain and body, all those people living with Parkinson’s will experience widespread physical and cognitive change. Specifically, they will sense acute muscular rigidity and lack of flow in movement and thinking.     Feature Article Cultural Dance and Health: A Review of the Literature Anna E. Olvera ABSTRACT Physical activity has many physical and mental health outcomes. However, physical inactivity continues to be com- mon. Dance, specifically cultural dance, is a type of physical activity that may appeal to some who are not otherwise active and may be a form of activity that is more acceptable than others in certain cultures. The purpose of this paper is to summarize literature describing the health benefits of cultural dance. Several databases were searched to identify articles published within the last 15 years, describing physical and mental health outcomes of cultural dance or inter- ventions that incorporated cultural dance. In the seven articles reviewed there is evidence to support the use of cultural dance for preventing excessive weight gain and cardiac risk, reducing stress, and increasing life satisfaction. Cultural dance is a practical form of physical activity to promote physical and mental health among subgroups of populations that often have lower amounts of participation in physical activity. There is a need for additional research to isolate how and in what ways cultural dance can be offered to promote physical activity. Practitioners should consider non- traditional forms of physical activity, offered in partnership with community organizations. BACKGROUND income.     One-Minute Guide Dance and Health Physical inactivity • Physical inactivity contributes to 1 in 10 deaths in the UK, equal to smoking and costs the UK economy £8.7 billion a year • It is the fourth largest cause of disease and disability in the UK (PHE 2014) Gender inequality In the UK, women and girls are more inactive than their male counterparts at every age across the life course: • Only 38% of girls achieved the recommended hour of physical activity each day compared with 63% for boys (Griffiths 2013) • 19% of men and 25% of women do less than 30 minutes a week (PHE 2014) Dance Dance is popular and effective at engaging women and girls in physical activity: • Dance UK surveys show that 4.5 million people take part in dance each year in England and most of these are women and girls • The DCMS’ Taking Part survey 2013/14 showed that 45.7 % of 5-10 year old girls took part in dance outside of school (compared to 15.7% boys). Only 11.7 % of girls played sport outside of school compared with 31.9% of boys. Reducing inequalities • Dance can be effective at engaging disadvantaged communities. Over the last 5 years, the DAZL dance programme, commissioned by Leeds public health, has engaged 8,500 children and young people from the most deprived areas in Leeds in regular dance activity. 75% were girls and over half were otherwise “inactive” beyond school. Benefits • Early years: Dance improves cognitive and physical development and enhances social skills. • Children and young people: Dance increases cardiovascular fitness, can prevent or reduce obesity and improve self-esteem.

On this account, emotions are perceptions of physiological changes. The majority of emotion theorists, however, hold some kind of a cognitive theory of the emotions. I argue, in opposition to these theories, that cognition is never necessary for emotion. Somatic theories of the emotions have never been well-received in philosophy and psychology. This is mainly because they are often perceived as being ill-equipped to explain many of the things that a theory of the emotions ought to account for. In particular, it is argued that somatic theories of the emotions fail to take into account the fact that emotions are typically directed toward an intentional object. Somatic theories, it is argued, are also unable to explain how to distinguish between different emotions associated with identical physiological responses. Moreover, since on my view emotions are a form of perception, my view would seem to allow for the bodily perceptions constituting emotions to occur unconsciously.
