Montréal, Wednesday, February 14, 2018 — The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, presented by TD Bank Group in collaboration with Rio Tinto, now unveils a second series of concerts in its 39th edition. From jazz in every style to world music, soul, electro-pop; from blue-chip tickets to newcomers, from home and abroad, a slew of talented artists are on their way to our Festival stages to thrill us once again. Tickets for these concerts go on sale this Friday, February 16 at noon, except for the concerts by Jain and Sons of Kemet, already on sale. Exclusive presale for Spectra Newsletter subscribers (infolettrespectra.ca): tomorrow, Thursday, February 15, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Kamasi Washington — June 30, 8:30 p.m., MTELUS (Rythmes) — A genuine sensation on the global jazz scene, Kamasi Washington ranks highly among those musicians with the brilliant talent to push jazz beyond its known boundaries. With an impressive CV including tours with jazz and hip-hop stars Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg and Lauryn Hill, he honours us with a first Festival visit, armed with his latest EP, Harmony of Difference. Snarky Puppy — June 28, 8:30 p.m., MTELUS (Rythmes) — We’re delighted to welcome the return of Snarky Puppy, instrumental fusion group led by the charismatic Michael League. After packing the Métropolis in 2015, the Puppy returns with Culcha Vulcha (Grammy Award winner for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album). And we can’t wait! Metronomy. Opening act: Duchess Says — June 29, 8:30 p.m., MTELUS (Rythmes) — It’s a first Festival visit for this group, celebrated for their refreshingly dance-tastic electro-pop sound. Almost 20 years into a career filled with live festival triumphs around the world, the English quartet is back with their latest release, Summer 08. The only thing left to do is surrender to their groove! Ry Cooder. Opening act: Joachim Cooder — June 29, 8 p.m., Théâtre Maisonneuve, Place des Arts (Grands concerts Rio Tinto) — Legendary musician, producer and composer Ry Cooder has built his reputation creating music at a crossroads of influences, nations and musical legacies. Named one of the ten greatest guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone, his life’s work is a rich tapestry featuring varied collaborations with the Buena Vista Social Club, Neil Young, Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones, as well as such original film soundtracks as Paris Texas. Chris Botti — July 2, 7 p.m., Maison symphonique (Festival à la Maison symphonique Delta Air Lines) — American trumpeter Chris Botti has spent several decades ruling the instrumental music charts. With an array of Grammy Awards, millions of albums sold and prestigious concerts worldwide, his style and talent have established him as one of the jazz-pop greats. Holly Cole — July 5, 7 p.m., Maison symphonique (Festival à la Maison symphonique Delta Air Lines) — One of this country’s great jazz singers, Holly Cole recently launched a new album, simply entitled HOLLY, on Universal Music Canada. Featuring such classics as They Can’t Take That Away From Me, Everybody Loves Somebody and Teach Me Tonight, it’s a collection that reveals the dynamism and flat-out talent of an extraordinary artist who brings a personal touch and flair to the timeless tracks of the songbook. Beth Hart — July 7, 8 p.m., Théâtre Maisonneuve, PdA (Grands concerts Rio Tinto) — One of the most magnetic voices in modern blues rock, American Beth Hart is well on her way to world conquest. Quite simply dazzling in her last Festival visit in 2015, she’s already won the respect of Joe Bonamassa and Jeff Beck. She returns with a new album, Black Coffee, driven by her powerhouse voice and spine- tingling songs. Jain (additional show) — July 6, 8:30 p.m., MTELUS (Rythmes) — Since appearing on the French scene, Jain has caused a sensation. With her multicultural melting-pot pop, a savvy irresistible blend of reggae, electronica and groove, she racked up the 2017 Victoire award for Female Artist of the Year and a platinum album for Zanaka. Mike Stern/Randy Brecker Band featuring Dennis Chambers and Tom Kennedy — June 30, 8 p.m., Monument-National (Jazz Beat Hyatt Regency Montréal) — It’s the dream team of jazz fusion: Mike Stern, Randy Brecker, Dennis Chambers and Tom Kennedy. Each musician in this concert is a virtuoso with a CV sparkling with prestigious collaborations. An evening in Monument-National that promises to be explosive; not to be missed under any pretext. Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band — July 3, 8 p.m., Monument-National (Jazz Beat Hyatt Regency Montréal) — Equally renowned for his solo work and his collaborations with Bob Dylan, Norah Jones, Wayne Shorter and Daniel Lanois, Brian Blade returns with his longtime pals, the Fellowship Band. On the repertoire: a technically accomplished, languorous new southern-accented album, Body and Shadow (Blue Note). Marinah (Ojos de Brujo) — July 7, 9 p.m., Club Soda (Couleurs SAQ) — As custodian of the wild energy of former Spanish band Ojos de Brujo, singer Marinah returns to Club Soda with her unstoppable musical fiesta: an irresistible fusion of flamenco, rumba and hip-hop, not to mention joie de vivre. Hot-hot-hot! Guillaume Perret, Free — June 28, 10 p.m., L’Astral (Club Heineken) — After recording two excellent albums with his group Electric Epic, French saxophonist Guillaume Perret went solo with Free in 2016: with funky grooves and abstract harmonies, impressions of a retro-futurist Africa and post-psychedelic U-turns, it’s a fusion of all forms of jazz, where all influences collide. He performs solo. Sons of Kemet — July 2, 10 p.m., L’Astral (Club Heineken) — British phenomenon Shabaka Hutchings (The Comet Is Coming, Shabaka & The Ancestors) leads this unique outfit (saxophone, tuba and two drummers) into roiling new territory, bubbling with trancey incantations, between jazz, punk, Afro-futurism, electronic and jubilant free jazz. Les Inrocks has compared this magnificently dazzling quartet to a spiritual seance during an earthquake! François Bourassa Quartet — July 3, 6 p.m., L’Astral (TD Jazz d’ici La Presse+) — Thirty years into his storied career, pianist François Bourassa is considered a reference point in contemporary Canadian jazz. He heads into L’Astral with his historic quartet (André Leroux, Guy Boisvert and Greg Ritchie) and pieces from his critically acclaimed latest album, Number 9. Bombino — July 4, 10 p.m., L’Astral (Club Heineken series) — Fusing traditional Berber rhythms with rock’n’roll energy in pacifist songs, Omara “Bombino” Moctar won Montréal’s heart a few years back with the album Nomad, produced by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys. Last year, the voice of the Sahara and the Sahel released Azel, a more acoustic take on desert blues rock. Jordan Officer — July 5, 6 p.m., L’Astral (Club Heineken series) — A Festival darling, guitarist Jordan Officer is renowned for a refined style accented with blues, jazz, country and R&B grooves. With his explosive virtuosity, he presents a 4th album, inspired by a road trip through the southern U.S., accompanied by his favourite musicians. An absolutely transporting show! Ranee Lee Octet, Dark Divas — July 6, 6 p.m., L’Astral (TD Jazz d’ici La Presse+) — A Festival regular, Ranee Lee ranks among Canada’s most renowned jazz chanteuses. She now brings us her newest project, Dark Divas, plunging into the lives and songbooks of seven of the most celebrated and fascinating jazzwomen of the 20th century, including Josephine Baker, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald. Emie R Roussel Trio and guests, Intersections — July 7, 6 p.m., L’Astral (TD Jazz d’ici La Presse+) — Armed with their most recent release, Intersections, the Emie R Roussel Trio return to back up their reputation as one of the most important groups in Canadian jazz. Racking up prestigious awards and worldwide tour dates, the talented Emie R Roussel and her trio serve up a dazzlingly spellbinding creative jazz, one we’re always happy to welcome here. Keyon Harrold — June 28, 10:30 p.m., Gesù (Jazz dans la nuit) — He is the “future of trumpet” according to the illustrious Wynton Marsalis. Match virtuosity with creativity and you get Keyon Harrold, an extraordinary trumpeter who sends jazz soaring over genre boundaries, between electronica, R&B, blues and hip-hop. With an impressive CV featuring collaborations with JAY-Z and Beyoncé as well as Gregory Porter and Gary Clark Jr, he delivers his new album, The Mugician. Marius Neset — June 29, 10:30 p.m., Gesù (Jazz dans la nuit) — In 2011, saxophonist Marius Neset made a resounding entrance onto the jazz scene with his debut album, Golden Xplosion, drawing comparisons with Jan Garbarek and establishing himself as a leader of the new wave of Scandinavian jazz. Armed with exemplary technique, creative energy and dazzling virtuosity, he makes his Festival debut with his latest album, Circle of Chimes. He’s not exaggerating, as Kennedy exhibits his mastery of the instrument and of composition with Points of View (2017). Kennedy plays electric bass, acoustic bass and keyboards. Personnel are Dave Weckl, drums; Bill Evans, soprano sax; Charles Blenzig, piano; Karla Harris, vocal on “New July”; Wes Ritenour, drums; Chuck Loeb, guitar; Bob Fanceschini, soprano sax, tenor sax; Lee Ritenour, guitar; Obed Calvaire, drums; Nick Marcione, trumpet; Randy Brecker, trumpet; Mike Stern, guitar; Richie Morales, drums; and Bob Malack, tenor sax. Weckl and Kennedy begin “The Dark” in emphatic fashion, injecting a slight Weather Report touch. After the intro, the mood changes to something more mellow. Evans takes lead, setting the mood for an evening of romance. The tenor expresses freely, with Weckl and Blenzig offering support. Kennedy evokes memories of Jaco Pastorius when playing in the background. During his middle solo, he makes the instrument talk, much like a suitor saying sweet nothings to his darling. At just above eight and a half minutes, it’s the second-longest track in the set. That gives the listener ample time to enjoy each musician individually, and the quartet as a whole. Lee Ritenour takes point on a song he wrote, “Just Listen.” His son, Wes, is on drums. The tune is like a hybrid of something contemporary, typical Rit, and a throwback to what one might expect from Wes Montgomery, one of Ritenour’s heroes.

Tom’s musical roots are with the acoustic bass, an instrument he started playing at age 9 and took to so naturally that within a few years he was performing with internationally known players such as Freddie Hubbard, James Moody, Nat Adderly, Sonny Stitt and Stan Kenton. Intrigued by the endless possibilities of the instrument, he began developing his now signature style best described as deep, soulful grooves merging seamlessly into acrobatic, horn-like soloing. Gaining a reputation that soon traveled beyond his native St. Louis, Tom relocated to New York City, where he quickly gained work with multiple groups. Further accolades came through a recording with guitar great Bill Connors and tours with tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker in the world-renowned jazz-fusion group Steps Ahead. Additional tours and recordings with Brazilian pianist Tania Maria and guitarist Al DiMeola followed. In 1998, Tom became an integral part of Modern Drummer hall of famer Dave Weckl’s band, a group he toured, composed and recorded with for over nine years. Tom and Dave have continued to perform and record together on various projects for other artists, including Mike Stern, Didier Lockwood, Dave Grusin and Lee Ritenour. Tom has also performed and recorded with top contemporary players Simon Phillips, Steve Gadd, Frank Gambale, Steve Lukather, David Sanborn, Jeff Lorber, Ricky Lawson, Joe Sample and fusion band Planet X.
