Jacobsen (bass), Henrik Lødøen (drums) MON 2ND - WED 4TH JULY: Doors 6.30pm / £25 - £45 Hailing from Norway, Rohey are a quartet whose music takes inspiration from jazz, funk and soul to create a sound that bristles with energy and honesty and lead vocalist Rohey Taalah brings KEYON HARROLD exquisite emotional complexity to her lyrics. Having toured extensively in Scandinavia and being nominated for Best Single at the Scandinavian Soul Awards in 2015, the band released their debut album A Million Things in 2017 which was championed on BBC Radio 2 by Jamie Cullum. Keyon Harrold (trumpet, vocals), Sherdrick Mitchell (piano), Nir Felder (guitar), Channelling old-school vibes and “a throwback to the days of a dynamic band with an engaging Burniss Travis (bass), Charles Haynes (drums) singer” (Scandinavian Soul), it is only a matter of time before Rohey’s star starts to rise in the U.K. Music this good can’t be kept secret for long. Raised from the fires of (now infamous) Ferguson, Missouri, Keyon Harrold has developed a reputation as one of the world’s most sought-after, emotionally electric young trumpeters on the scene. Having toured and recorded with or produced for some of the world’s best artists and ensembles like Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Common, Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill, he recently released his excellent debut album , which features guest spots from the likes of Robert Glasper, SUNDAY JAZZ LUNCH 1ST JULY: Doors 12 noon - 4pm / £15 - £20 The Mugician Bilal, Big K.R.I.T., Gary Clark, Jr., Pharoahe Monch and more. Sanders made his first record as a leader in 1964 and from the late Sharon D. Clarke 1960s, he worked primarily as a leader of his own ensembles. Pharoah Sanders possesses one of the most distinctive tenor saxophone sounds in jazz. Harmonically rich and heavy with overtones, Sanders’ sound can also be more experimental. Capable of playing convincingly in a variety of contexts, from free to mainstream, Sanders has discovered a hard-edged lyricism that has served him well. Generationenproblem? Wahrscheinlich. Also einmal mehr: Marcus Miller.

  • Snarky Puppy – Live at the Royal Albert Hall
Snarky Puppy – Live At The Royal Albert Hall (50:22 + 48:57, 2 CD, 3 LP, GroundUp Music, 2020) Erstaunlich, welche Acts abseits des allgemeinen Mainstreams mittlerweile die Royal Albert Hall füllen.

Frink, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2016 Ornette Coleman (1930-2015) is frequently referred to as not only a great visionary in jazz music but as also the father of the jazz avant-garde movement. As such, his work has been a topic of discussion for nearly five decades among jazz theorists, musicians, scholars and aficionados. While this music was once controversial and divisive, it eventually found a wealth of supporters within the artistic community and has been incorporated into the jazz narrative and canon. Coleman’s musical practices found their greatest acceptance among the following generations of improvisers who embraced the message of “free jazz” as a natural evolution in style.
