Expertly crafted for sleep elegance. BRENDON VAN NIEWENHUIZEN NEWS FROM THE COUNTRY CLUB

Golf greetings to all

My name is Brendon van Nieuwenhuizen. I matriculated in 2004 from Delmas High School, and I have been gol ng ever since. I completed my PGA apprenticeship at Woodhill Golf Estate and from there I worked at Koro Creek Golf Estate, Vulentaba Country Club and Woodhill to gain experience. This is my 12th year in the gol ng industry.

I have a background in golf management, golf training and played a few tournaments in . I consider it an honour to work with a team who is committed to pushing the limits to achieving meaningful collaboration for the members and homeowners.

I will be making it my goal to get all Estate homeowners involved in making Silver Lakes the best gol ng experience in Gauteng.

Communication between all homeowners, members and sta must be a priority as this will ensure that issues are resolved.

My o ce is always open to Silver Lakes residents and golf members to exchange ideas, pay a compliment, whether it be for the course or sta members, and to lend an ear if there are uncertainties about anything pertaining to the Country Club.

We want all homeowners to be proud to live in this superb Estate and also to make it a priority to come down to the Clubhouse and enjoy the atmosphere of our own small town. Exclusive to our Silver Lakes Estate Readers (Bring this ad in to redeem the voucher) Some issues we will be addressing on the course will be residents’ safety during gol ng hours. CORLIA MATHEWS ENVIRONMENT, SOCIAL & ETHICS DIRECTOR Environmental report

his month’s article is focusing on nature: the trees and game We have a ‘tree policy’ on the Estate. What does this tree policy entail? on the Estate. I had a walk on the golf course this past week • We promote the use of indigenous species of trees and plants, and it was a pleasure! Not only is the golf course in pristine especially species endemic to our area. condition, but the dam on the 5th is clean for the rst time • This does not only promote the inclusive look and feel of the inT nearly two years! We will be keeping an eye on that and will start Estate into the environment, but it also (and most importantly) with cleaning of the same weed grasses and reeds in other parts of provides pockets of natural habitat for species (game, birds and the Estate in April; as well as adding sh to the dams to possibly help insects). with controlling new growth of and weed grasses. • Using indigenous trees is always water-wise. • Since we are in a semi-arid rainfall region, these plants can withstand waterless months such as winter as well as short drought periods. • On the golf course, the classic natural combination of white stinkwood, karee and thorn trees are complimented with a few other indigenous species. • We will be using the same or similar tree species when we do our tree planting for 2018. • Similarly, we use indigenous and endemic species in our garden plants as well.

We obviously have the plants we inherited more than 25 years ago. One non-indigenous tree that was inherited is the fan-palm trees on the boulevards. They were originally planted to emphasise the colonial look and feel of the buildings at the time of development. Now they are centralised in the boulevards, at the entrances and at the Clubhouse where architecture is central, and the element is therefore carried through from the gates to the Club.

During the past four years, we have relocated the roses from the more than 90 corners to the Clubhouse so that maintaining them is easier and so that they become a focal point at the Clubhouse. They ower abundantly and if we pick up a bug or pest, it is treated immediately by our garden contractor. The “empty” corners were then planted with kikuyu, not only to minimise clutter and labour, but also to mirror the look and feel of the golf course as a unifying design element. It is on these corners that we are building the new corner structures that have some of our Clubhouse plants – roses and Erigeron (the ne little groundcover) – and we will be planting some trees to increase the amount of indigenous trees on the Estate.

All our street trees are indigenous and have been planted over the past 25 years of the Estate’s existence. In the beginning, you had to pay a R250 street tree non-refundable deposit when you bought a stand so that street trees could be planted on the Estate.

All these trees are part of the overall look and feel of the Estate and therefore may not be removed or pruned without approval from the HOA. For that matter, no tree that is not on your property may be removed without approval. Even though homeowners look after their own sidewalks, and therefore the sidewalk trees, approval must be obtained from the HOA for pruning and removal.

The Game Reserve As I walked through the veld, I noticed far fewer weeds and that the We have received our new sables and I went in search of them in the veld grass is in better condition than we have had for many years, not game reserve, once again realising just how lucky we are to have such only because of better conditions, but also because of the hard work a wonderful facility right in the middle of town, next to the ! of our environmental teams and contractors.

We have closed all roads criss-crossing the Game Reserve and seeded the bare areas. We have blocked o these roads, mostly with branches – which some of us even drive over with our 4 x 4s! Please do not drive through the Game Reserve. Use only around the service road and the other o cial roads! We have to leave some roads for breaks and o cial use. They are not for vehicle use.

As you will see in the photos, we have successfully reclaimed some roads and others areas are still in the process thereof. As mentioned in a previous article, part of the ‘job’ of the covering branches is to protect seeds and new grass from the birds and game eating them before they are settled.

You are free to walk and hike through the Game Reserve. If you would like to hike the whole way, there are markers indicating the hiking route. We have kudu (12), nyala (17), impala (23), springbuck (29), blesbuck (19), common reedbuck (4), mountain reedbuck (8), waterbuck (2), bushbuck (4), steenbok (6) and grey duiker (6) in the game reserve – these exclude our new little ones that you will see in some of the photos!

24 INTRA MUROS 4 2018 ENVIRONMENTAL MATTERS

In the photos above, you will see some of the game I saw on my way through the bush to meet the three little sables. I even saw the waterbuck and her new baby. Please take cognisance of the fact that it is a game reserve and all the animals are wild animals. Please do not chase them, make noise or approach them in any way. Keep still, be quiet and observe. They are so at home in Silver Lakes that we sometimes feel as if they can be treated like domestic animals… Remember, we are visiting them in their home and should respect them in that manner!

INTRA MUROS 4 2018 25 ENVIRONMENTAL MATTERS

Have a wonderful ‘holiday’ month – March and April seem to be lled with all kinds of holidays if you still have children at school! But even if you don’t, we go from one long weekend to the other so enjoy it. If you need more information about anything or think I can help with anything, send me an email at [email protected] or give me a call at 083 448 9441.

On a sadder note, with all the good news of new babies and relocations in the Game Reserve, I have to mention that we have lost a few animals this past weekend (as in the photos). A baby kudu died of natural causes and we are looking into the matter together with our in-house game warden and will be discussing it at the Environmental Working Group Meeting. But others died during the course of the year because of speeding – in other words, car accidents.

PLEASE DRIVE CAREFULLY – if you can do this to one of our wild animals, it can just as easily be one of our children!

On my walk I also noted people using rock from the veld for their garden walls or other structures. Please note, no one is allowed to use any material from the veld in the Game Reserve. This includes the rocks which seem to be there for free – they are protected as part of our heritage sites! If you look closely, you will see most of them are packed and seem to form part of walls or hedges. Please do not remove or move them!

PS: If you see any of these – our owl boxes – please monitor the birds nesting there if you can. Take photographs, let us know what action you see, but do not approach – just let us know. Thanks!

Focus on your goals DR ILSE RUANE PSYCHOLOGY FOR AN APPOINTMENT PLEASE CALL: 083 376 1995

t is often di cult to focus on our goals. However, having goals is do not have clear, de ned goals. Goals are important for more than an important part of life. We need goals in order to help achieve just the sake of the goals themselves. Goals are important because of our hopes and dreams. Goals also provide us with to work towards. those goals mean to us – the behind-the-scenes meaning. If the things They help us nd direction in a sometimes chaotic life. that we want do not have more meaning beyond face value, when the IMany people go through the motions of life – day to day, week going gets tough, we will get going most of the time. Plus, the victory to week, month to month, and even year to year – without a real, is so much sweeter after the goal has been achieved because of the concrete direction for their lives. They have no direction because they emotional investment placed on the goal.

LET’S ACHIEVE OUR GOALS: 1. Be very speci c in terms of the actual goal The more speci c you are about your goals, the better and more able you will be to accomplish them. This means that you do not just say you want to lose more weight; you have to say exactly how much weight you want to lose. You have to put a real and exact gure on it. Make it measurable.

Without speci cs, there is no real target, just some obscure direction. When the goal is obscure, it allows the psychology of your mind to override your goals. You succumb to things like mundane, ordinary, daily life activities to easily avoid doing something that was not that concrete in the rst place. To make it concrete, write it down and quantify it.

When you write out your goals, be as speci c as possible. If you have not written out your goals, then you are missing the most important part of e ective goal setting. When you do not write your goals, they stay abstract and your goal remains a passive, albeit well- intentioned goal. You have to write them down and get very speci c about them.

Therefore, write out what that goal means to is left to go? you and make sure that it is something important. By tracking your progress every single day, you will be much more 3. Set goals that are achievable likely to achieve them. Why? Goals can easily be ignored if they are When you are setting goals, especially short-term goals, make sure that they not evaluated every single day. Your mind has a very clever way of are achievable. This does not mean that you can not aim big in your long- allowing you to ignore your goals by pushing you into "just for today" term plans. Set goals that are relevant to your life. This means that the goals should be in line with what you want out of life. Adapt Adapting or re-adjusting does not mean that you have to throw 5. Goals need a time frame your goals out and start all over. What it means is that you have to try Set dates on when you plan to achieve these goals. For example, focus on di erent approaches until you nd yourself getting closer and closer goals that are in three-month intervals. If you plan to achieve a 10-kilogram to your goals. That is why constant evaluation on a daily basis is so weight loss in six months, then break that down into three-month intervals. important. If you do not evaluate, you cannot measure your progress. That’s 5 kilograms every three months. This makes the goal appear more achieveable than 10 kilograms all at once. It is the motivational part that is di cult. Because, at the end of the day, it is up to you to stay focused on your goals. The only person you When your goals are time-bound, they are measurable. You should work would be cheating by not putting in the e ort every single day to hard towards holding yourself accountable by measuring those goals on achieve your goals is yourself. Remember, key to success in achieving goals is to plan in advance. 6. Construct and follow a plan Where does that leave us? To stay focused on our goals, we need a plan. Setting one huge goal can be discouraging, especially when you do not achieve it after a short while. When that happens, some people may procrasinate or give up on the goal altogether.

• Learn to say no. Do you often put your goals aside for other people? It is okay to do that once or twice, but if you keep doing the whole time, something is wrong. You cannot put your life on hold for others forever.

Oxtail Potjie We’re heading towards winter and who doesn’t love a potjie? Cooking a potjie isn’t only about the food is it? It’s a time of bonding, chatting, sitting round the black cauldron with friends and family literally all afternoon – and the result is always delicious. This month, we’re pairing our recipe of oxtail with the featured wine.

This easy and delicious recipe serves eight guests. Why not make the recipe this weekend, take a few photos and send them through to me to be featured in the next issue of the Intra Muros? We’d love to see how it turned out.

INGREDIENTS 30 ml butter 30 ml canola oil 1.5 kg oxtail, small pieces seasoned our 1 onion, sliced 3 cloves, garlic, sliced 1 large carrot, diced 1 large stick of celery 2 sprigs rosemary 12 pickling (baby) onions, peeled 250 g baby carrots, peeled (or just 4 large carrots, cut into large chunks) 12 baby potatoes 250 ml strong beef stock 30 ml tomato paste 500 ml good red wine freshly ground salt and pepper

METHOD Coat the oxtail pieces liberally in seasoned our. Heat the butter and oil in the potjie. Brown the meat and set aside. Add the prepared onion, garlic, carrot, celery and rosemary and fry until softened. Add the remaining veggies and heat through. Add the meat, followed by the hot stock, tomato paste and wine. Cover and simmer gently over moderate heat for 4 hours. Add more wine if the liquid evaporates too rapidly. Season to taste and serve with rice, mash or homemade bread!

0821_Woodlands opening Phase 1_Silverlakes Full Page Ad_297x210.indd 1 2017/11/15 1:59:25 PM BOOK REVIEWS BY NICOLE HERMANSON BRUTAL LEGACY: A MEMOIR R231.00 By Tracy Going

'Searing, heartbreaking, triumphant: Brutal Legacy is for anyone who's been punched in the face by someone they loved and then stood up again. It's for every mother who has run, every sister who has picked up the pieces and every friend who hasn't ed. It's for every brother who's cried and for the children who have watched. Every South African should read it.' – Sisonke Msimang, author of Always Another Country.

When South Africa's golden girl of broadcasting, Tracy Going's battered face was splashed across the media back in the late 1990s, the nation was shocked. South Africans had become accustomed to seeing Going, glamorous and groomed on television or hearing her resonant voice on Radio Metro and Kaya FM. Sensational headlines of a whirlwind love relationship turned horrendously violent threw the 'perfect' life of the household star into disarray.

What had started o as a fairy-tale romance with a man who appeared to be everything that Going was looking for – charming, handsome and successful – had quickly descended into a violent, abusive relationship. Brilliantly penned, this highly skilled debut memoir is ultimately uplifting in the realisation that healing is a lengthy and often arduous process and that self-forgiveness and acceptance are essential in order to fully embrace life.

R290.00 THE TOY MAKERS By Robert Dinsdale

An enchanting, spectacularly imaginative magical novel set in a mysterious toy shop.

Do you remember when you believed in magic? It is 1917, and while war wages across Europe, in the heart of London, there is a place of hope and enchantment.

The Emporium sells toys that capture the imagination of children and adults alike: patchwork dogs that seem alive, toy boxes that are bigger on the inside, soldiers that can ght battles of their own. Into this family business comes young Cathy Wray, running away from a shameful past. The Emporium takes her in, makes her one of its own.

But Cathy is about to discover that the Emporium has secrets of its own...

BELIEVE IN TOMORROW By Mmusi Maimane R250.00

Mmusi Maimane has become a key gure in South African politics since being elected leader of the Democratic Alliance at the age of 35. But who is Mmusi Maimane and what makes him tick? In this book, Maimane speaks openly about his background and his political career, his views about the current state of South Africa, and his hopes for the country’s future.

He describes his youth in Dobsonville, Soweto; his education and early political activities; and his rise through the ranks of the DA. He talks frankly about his multiracial family and his religious convictions. He provides an insider’s account of con icts in Parliament, coalition negotiations after the 2016 local government elections, and his deportation from Zambia in 2017. And he gives his views on race and reconciliation, corruption and state capture, the economy, education, foreign policy and the future of South African politics.

Believe in Tomorrow provides a compelling glimpse into the personal life and political beliefs of one of the country’s most important politicians.
