Barowsky 1 Sophie Barowsky Professor Candland Political Logic & Persuasion 21 December 2017 Scientology: The Art of Cultic Persuasion Introduction The Church of Scientology remains one of the most controversial religious groups in the United States. Scientology was founded in 1954 by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard (LRH) (Reitman, 2011). After writing Dianetics—a book discussing psychoanalytic techniques to purify the mind—L. Ron Hubbard established the Church of Scientology to apply the principles he created. Scientologists regard Dianetics as a scripture or holy text of sorts (Gibney, Vaurio, Wright, & Nevins, 2015). Following the death of LRH in 1986 a man named David Miscavige, who grew up in Scientology as a protégé of Hubbard’s, took over as the leader of the Church of Scientology (Lindsey, January 29, 1986; Gibney, Vaurio, Wright, & Nevins, 2015). One of Miscavige’s biggest accomplishments for the Church was the court win against the IRS providing religious tax exemption (Lewis 2015: 227). With its religious tax exempt status, the Church’s assets amass to billions of dollars, mainly due to their lavish buildings as well as the sheer amount of real estate they own (Reitman, 2011). Although the Church of Scientology was founded in the United States, Scientology has since spread to many other countries like England, Australia, and a number of European countries (Reitman, 2011). Scientology presents itself as “the study of knowledge” and truth-seeking through the use of technology developed by their founder LRH (n.d., What Is Scientology). The Church of Scientology is set up in a hierarchical Barowsky 2 structure with members working to reach the next level, eventually becoming “clear,” or fully aware and free from the “reactive” mind1; the highest level one can reach is OT VIII.

  • Celebrities Keeping Scientology Working Stephen A
5 Celebrities Keeping Scientology Working Stephen A. Kent L. Ron Hubbard was prescient with his realization about the impact that stars and celebrities had upon ordinary people in mass culture. People imitated and emulated them, often modeling aspects of their own lives according to what actors did on stage or how they lived their lives off-camera. Statements that he made about the celebrities in the entertainment industry fostered among some of them an inflated feeling of self-importance, portraying them as art- ists who shaped the development of civilization. The artists who absorbed this inflated view of their contributions did so as they socialized into the subcultural world that Hubbard created, in which they equated civilizational advance with furthering Scientology’s influence. Serving Scientology, there- fore, was a means by which they felt that they were contributing to society’s advancement, and if by doing so, they caught the eye of a producer looking to fill a part in a film, then ever so much the better. This chapter examines the way that Scientology utilizes celebrities in the organization’s overall effort to “keep Scientology working.” I kept in mind the overall description of elites that appears in resource mobilization theory, since these celebrities have the flexible time, resources, and media connec- tions that allows them to open areas nationally or internationally in which they can proselytize. More importantly, however, might be the significance of having celebrity status itself, because that status carries with it forms of unique, valuable assets that its possessors can use to influence others in soci- ety.

  • Narconon, Scientology, and the Battle for Legitimacy
MARBURG JOURNAL OF RELIGION, Vol. 19, No. 1 (2017) 1 Narconon, Scientology, and the Battle for Legitimacy Stephen A. Kent Abstract This article provides an historical description and analysis of Scientology’s controversial drug treatment program, Narconon. Following scholarship by sociologist Terra Manca on Scientology’s pseudo-medicine, I argue that Scientology initially wavered about acknowledging its program to be part of its ‘religion,’ but eventually dropped this claim as it attempted to get Narconon programs and teachings established in communities. I show, however, the intimate association between Scientology and Narconon courses, and present some of the evidence that the program lacks scientific validity - especially its Purification Rundown. I. INTRODUCTION Developed by Scientology and overseen by one of its front groups called the Association for Better Living and Education (ABLE), 1 Narconon represents itself as a drug treatment program that “has been saving lives since 1966.” 2 Its treatment involves regimes of running, vitamin consumption, saunas, and courses borrowed almost directly from Scientology, based upon the instructions of Scientology’s founder, L. Ron Hubbard (1911-1986). According to a 2017 Narconon Worldwide website that listed its “drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers,” thirty-one programs operated globally, scattered throughout the United States, Latin America, Europe, Russia, the Ukraine, Turkey, Nepal, and Australia. 3 The website listed eight of those programs as operating in America, and in November 2016, the online Behavioral Health Treatment Services Locator for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) within the United States Department of Health and Human Services provided contact information for two Narconon programs.

  • Scientology and the State: Narconon's Influence in The
SCIENTOLOGY AND THE STATE: NARCONON’S INFLUENCE IN THE PRISON SYSTEM by Drew Tewksbury Professional Project Presented to the FACULTY OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree MASTER OF ARTS (JOURNALISM) May 2008 Copyright 2008 Drew Tewksbury Table of Contents Abstract iii Text 1 Sidebar: Scientology and the Internet 17 Second Chance Timeline 19 Works Cited 20 ii Abstract Scientology has never been a stranger to controversy and now an alternative prison rehabilitation center based on Scientology drug treatment stirs concern with medical experts. The Second Chance Center is a small facility outside Albuquerque, N.M., which uses the Scientology-based drug treatment program called Narconon. It is the first prison-based rehabilitation center in America that was designed specifically to foster the Narconon system, and its founders hope that it will be the model for more centers around the country. The Narconon program, designed by Scientology founder, L. Ron Hubbard, uses a system of saunas, massages, organic diets, and behavior training classes intended to help drug addicted inmates kick their habits. But medical experts from several states are concerned that the federally funded program is ineffective and potentially dangerous. iii Situated in the browning grass plains outside of Albuquerque, N.M., a perimeter of chain-linked fences and barbed wire surround a beige building with a dark blue door. The building itself is nothing special, it could be any number of anonymous structures orphaned in the New Mexico wasteland, but inside this structure is something out of the ordinary.

  • PRAISE for the FUTURE of HAPPINESS
PRAISE for THE FUTURE OF HAPPINESS “Volumes have been written about how bad technology can be for us, but Amy Blankson is the first author I’ve seen to lay out a simple, achievable path to explain how to stay grounded and balanced in the digital era.” —Laszlo Bock, former head of people operations at Google and bestselling author of Work Rules! “Too often, the concept of personal happiness is left out of discussions about technology and the future of our world. The Future of Happiness is a timely reminder about the importance of happiness, meaning, and our fragile, promising selves.” —Susan Cain, author of Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking “The Future of Happiness gave me tactical tips in the first few minutes and a genuinely happier life by the end. In an age of endless interruptions, this book couldn’t have arrived at a better time.” —Neil Pasricha, New York Times bestselling author of The Happiness Equation and The Book of Awesome “I believe that virtually all of us on this planet are struggling with two core issues: how to feel happier every day and how to balance technology so we’re not overrun or dehumanized by it. Rather than fighting against the digital movement, we need higher-level help to harness it for our greatest joy, success, connection, and fulfillment. Amy’s book is the per- fect pathway to this—offering amazing new strategies to help us access more joy and meaning while at the same time leveraging the power of technology to enhance and enrich our lives.
