First up is the reissue of the Rolling Stones album Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out!. What many consider the best live rock concert album of all time is now available from Abcko in a four-disc box set. Along with the original album there is a disc of five previously unreleased live performances and a DVD of those performances. There is a also a bonus CD of five live tracks from B.B. King and seven from Ike & Tina Turner, who were the opening acts on the tour. There is also a beautiful hardcover book with an essay by Russell, his photographs, fans’ notes and expanded liner notes, along with a lobby card-sized reproduction of the tour poster. Russell’s new book, Let It Bleed (Springboard), is now finally out and it’s a stunning visual look back on the infamous tour and the watershed Altamont concert. Russell doesn’t just provide his historic photos (which would be sufficient), but, like in his previous Dear Mr. Fantasy book, he serves as an insightful eyewitness of the greatest rock tour in history and rock music’s 60’s live Waterloo.

z August 1987 £1.50 o US-400 o .11 co o SOUND AND BROADCAST ENGINEERING www.americanradiohistory.com This is the mixing console that will cause a revolution in 24 track studios. The world's first Dual Mode mixing console. With the advanced features and performance of a desk you'd expect to cost a great deal more than it actually does, it's a remarkable achievement. Take Dual Mode. When you record with the T512, its in -line monitoring means you create a control room mix on ALL THE FEATURES the main faders. YOU'D EXPECT In mixdown this becomes the basis for your IN A £30,000 CONSOLE, EXCEPT ONE. master mix. Saving time and helping you keep a train of thought as to how the final mix will sound. THE PRICE. Unlike other in -line desks, though, the T512 also allows true stereo subgrouping on long -throw group faders. In this mode the routing matrix offers either six stereo groups or four extra auxiliary sends - totalling ten sends - plus four stereo groups. No other console in the world provides such versatility. The T512 is an open -ended investment, with op- tional disc -based SMPTE automation for faders, mutes, EQ in/out and auxiliary on /off. Again, at the price it's unique. And fittingly, ,audio performance is superb. Recent Soundcraft advances in summing amp technology, and in grounding and decoupling systems, make the T512 one of the cleanest and quietest consoles ever. The mic amplifiers, a critical factor in console quality, create less than 0.01% distortion at 10kHz at 70dB of gain.

The trouble with many of us is that at the earlier stages of life we think we know everythingÑor to put it more usefully, we are often unaware of the scope and structure of our ignorance. Ignorance is not just a blank space on a personÕs mental map. It has contours and coherence, and for all I know rules of operation as well. ÑThomas Pynchon When you get right down to it, itÕs all sublime. That is, indescribable. You donÕt stop, though. You keep trying to describe it. Language games become a form of breathing. What you donÕt know can and will hurt you, but not as much as what you already know, which has already hurt you and will continue to bring you pain. This is also the ultimate cause of joy. To what extent is the unknown a function of memory, and to what extent fate? We are frontier-obsessive creatures.

  • CD Review: Bryan Ferry’S Avonmore
CD Review: Bryan Ferry’s Avonmore Last Monday, former Roxy Music frontman Bryan Ferry released his 15th studio album, Avonmore. The album was produced by longtime Roxy Music/Ferry associate, Rhett Davies, but he also got some help from a long list of talented musicians, most notably Nile Rodgers of Chic (and everything lately) and Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Nile Rodgers makes his influence known not only by his signature funky, choppy guitar sound that is featured in most of the songs, but an overall sleek tone to the songs and the production. The title track has a driving disco backbeat with impressive bass fills sprinkled throughout that can only be Flea. But occasionally the lushness goes a little too far. “A Special Kind of Guy,” for example, takes the smoothness to a sickly sweet parody level, complete with some tepid wah-wah guitar in the background. Perhaps the overproduction is due to an overblown cast of characters; on “Loop De Li” alone there appears Nile Rodgers, Johnny Marr, well-known blues guitarist Neil Hubbard, Sex Pistols axeman Steve Jones, session guitarist David Williams, and jazz legend Marcus Miller on bass, and that’s not even everybody playing a guitar. Ferry’s status as a UK national treasure is definitely secure, but it seems like he may be a little too focused on partying with rockstars. One of the elements (other than the top-tier musicians) that made Roxy Music so special in the ’70s was Ferry’s somehow-masculine cooing vocal technique. It’s undeniable that age isn’t the best thing for your vocals; unless you’re some kind of immortal weirdo like James Taylor, you probably won’t be hitting the high notes you did in your 20s when you’re 69 (Ferry’s age).

Bio information: MATCHING MOLE Title: "SMOKE SIGNALS" (Cuneiform Rune 150) Cuneiform promotion dept: (301) 589-8894 / fax (301) 589-1819 email: [email protected] http://www.cuneiformrecords.com FILE UNDER: ROCK/PROGRESSIVE ROCK Matching Mole was the band formed by drummer/vocalist Robert Wyatt after he left the pioneering UK outfit Soft Machine in July, 1971. Soft Machine were hugely popular in France, and Robert got the name of his new band as a play on the French translation of Soft Machine: Machine Molle. What eventually became the first Matching Mole album was begun as a solo album by Robert in late 1971. Midway through recording, he was joined by guitarist Phil Miller (Delivery, Hatfield & The North, National Health), organist Dave Sinclair (Caravan), bassist Bill MacCormick (Phil Manzaneraʼs 801) and guest electric pianist Dave MacRae (Mike Westbrook). These recordings became their self titled first album, released in early 1972. Sinclair left soon after the release of their album, and MacRae joined full time. This quartet performed often throughout Europe, and recorded a second album, Little Red Record, which was produced by Robert Fripp of King Crimson, and which was released in fall,1972. Shortly after the release of Little Red Record, Robert decided that he did not want the responsibilities of being a band leader & broke up the band. For a band that was only in existence for a year, Matching Mole was particularly active: two studio albums, over fifty concerts in Britain and continental Europe, and a number of TV and radio broadcasts. Smoke Signals compiles all previously unreleased performances from the bandʼs most intense gigging period, the spring of 1972, and has been assembled to replicate their continuous concert set.
