CORNELL, Governor of the State of New York: The undersigned, citizens of' several states and countries, address I. you by reason of the suggestion lately made by LORD DUFFERIN, that I, the State of New York and the Dominion of Canada should secure and hold, for the world's good, the lands adjacent to the Falls of Niagara. The Falls of Niagara are peculiarly exposed to disastrous injury. The heights of snow, the precipitous crags of great mountains, how­ " ~ ever they may be disfigured by man, can rarely be applied to uses / which would destroy their sublimity. But should the islands and declivities of the Niagara River be stripped of their natural woods, and occupied for manufacturing and business purposes; should even the position, size, and form of the constructions which the accommoda­ tion of visitors will call for, continue to be regulated solely by the pecuniary interests of numerous iudividual laud-owners, the loss to the world will be great and irreparable. The danger may be measured by what has already occurred. The river's banks ar~ denuded of the noble forest by which they were originally covered, are degraded by \ incongruous and unworthy structures, made, for advertising purposes, willfully conspicuous and obtrusive, and the visitor's attention is diverted from scenes to the influence of which he would ~Iadly sur­ { render himself, by demands for tolls and fees, and the offer of services I, most of which he would prefer to avoid.     INTERNAL CONFLICT IN KEY STATES IN THE DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION OF 1880 By ALBERT V. HOuSE* {RNE of the more significant of recent monographs dealing with 0 the period of the Civil War, and especially with the accom- plishments of Abraham Lincoln, stresses the fact that the defeat of the Confederacy deprived the concept of "states rights" of plausibility, not only in the South but in the North as well.1 Yet for decades after the war the Democratic party resisted the fact of national supremacy and operated as though the states were still the dominant units in American society. They refused to face the implications of the transformation of the federal union of quasi- autonomous states into the new nation with its national economy, national culture, and national problems. This ostrich-type "head- in-the-sand" attitude was never better illustrated than in the na- tional conventions of the party from 1864 to 1884. These conclaves were almost totally devoid of national vision and courageous statesmanship. They were, rather, mere arenas for a host of suicidal personal, regional, and economic class conflicts. The delegates to these quadriennial assemblies persisted in acting as though the political climate were the same as in the days of Jackson and Van Buren. One college text of a quarter-century ago provides a superb thumbnail summary of this earlier period with the observation that: The Whig and Democratic parties and their successors were a bundle of local, sectional, and class interests, whose cross-sections . were a jig saw puzzle of radicalism and conservatism, national and state rights, personal loyalties and local issues.

    270 HISTORY OF CENTRAL NEW YORK the lake about 1886. Much rivalry arose between the competing lines. For years thousands of passengers were carried each sum mer. Rates were cut until one could travel the round trip, a distance of forty miles, at a fare of ten cents on the Genundawah and twenty cents on the Onnalinda. Finally the Genundawah was taken over by George Miller, proprietor of a big vineyard and wine cellar at Miller's Point, south of Seneca Point. One night, as the boat was tied up at Woodville, at the south end of the lake, she caught fire and was destroyed, December 8, 1894. To the west of Canandaigua Lake the hills rise to an alti tude of 2,300 feet, highest in the region. The remarkable purity of the air in the district is indicated by the fact that the Dela ware grape, grown successfully in only a few localities, has here reached its greatest perfection. Vine Valley, directly opposite Seneca Point, sends its favorite Delawares to eastern markets earlier than does any other region north of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and its products have shown the highest saccharometer test ever shown by American grapes. Canandaigua Lake is one of two along the Finger Lakes hav ing a sizable island. Squaw Island, at the northern end of the lake and containing about a half acre of land, is said to have been the sanctuary for the Indian women of the Seneca village of Kanadaragua, a mile to the northeast, when Sullivan's soldiers destroyed the place in 1779.

Well, have no fear, I, Isaac Rood Taylor, am here to help. Just bring your old worn out top hat down to my shop on West Water Street, and I’ll fix it up for you in under a week. All it’ll cost is one dollar, which you have to admit is a great deal. New top hats can cost as much as six, even eight dollars. Refurbishing the old topper is clearly the best choice. I can even reshape it a bit to bring it up to the newest fashion. I spent years repairing and remodeling top hats in Elmira. Being born in 1851, I was at the prefect age to appreciate the elegant piece of men’s headwear when it became hugely popular in the 1870s. I made quite the living off my particular skills as a hatter until tastes changed and men only wore top hats on the most formal occasions. By that time I had a wife and three children to take care of, so I had to find other work. I’ve always had a mechanical mind, so I ended up taking jobs as a contractor, an excavator, and a dredger. I earned quite a fine reputation for my hard work done at a fair price.
