Important Changes Coming in 2017: CANVAS to Replace School Loop The Sequoia Union High School District is pleased to announce that we are migrating from School Loop to Canvas LMS (Learning Management System) for the 2017-2018 academic year and beyond. As the education landscape continues to evolve, it is the district’s desire to always provide students, staff, and parents with the very best resources that will prepare our graduates to become productive citizens in a global society. Canvas provides rich and engaging learning experiences for students through its online discussion boards and multi-media functionality. Convenience and accessibility are also greatly improved through the allowance of electronic submission of work, as well as the ability to review lessons and documents provided in a given class. Canvas integrates with many services the district currently uses, such as Google Apps and Turn It In. Additionally, staff members have the ability to collaborate seamlessly when developing curriculum. Canvas is a closed ecosystem; all information within it is secure and only accessible through a district-provisioned account. Canvas LMS is widely used within San Mateo Community College District, California State University system, University of California system and at Stanford University. In an effort to simplify access, the district has set parent usernames and passwords to be the same with the services listed below. These usernames and passwords were sent to families in April prior to the Outline Information Update. Accounts will be available when school resumes in August.

Woodside High School Foundation Starts the School Year with Record Funding for Academic Programs

With an outpouring of generosity from Woodside High School families, faculty, alumni and community partners, the Woodside High School Foundation broke records last year, raising over $1 million to expand and enrich academic programs for all WHS students. Those funds are already going to work now as the school year opens to:  Renovate the library to make it a refreshed, flexible learning space  Reduce class sizes in more than 60 classrooms, including core subjects in the social sciences, math, and English and Advanced and AP courses  Expand electives, including the Urban Debate League and Entrepreneurship courses  Support a second College and Career Counselor to support our students though the college application and enrollment process  Provide equipment for STEM and digital arts programs “This year, we’re excited to welcome students for the first time to the STEM building, and the purchase of state-of-the-art science and engineering equipment was a result of funding provided by the Woodside High School Foundation,” says Principal Diane Burbank. “Smaller class sizes give our WHS more individual support that is so important to learning on all levels, from core to advanced placement classes. So many of the expanded opportunities we see every day at Woodside High School are a direct result of our partnership with the Foundation.” We cannot continue funding these enriching opportunities for our students without YOU and YOUR HELP! The Woodside High School Foundation is a volunteer-run organization of parents that works year round to supplement public funding and expand the educational experience for all students at Woodside High School. We raise money through our Annual Fund campaign in the fall and the Spring Auction. Please see www.whsfoundation.org for more information.

As we kick off our annual campaign, please look for the annual report and appeal coming in your mailbox in September. Then give generously at any amount you can afford to provide Woodside High School students with the opportunities to succeed in high school and beyond. Our students are counting on you!

The 20th Annual Spring Auction has been an unprecedented success: with the support of parents, students, and community members, we raised more than $340,000 for Woodside students! If you missed your chance to sign up for our fabulous buy-in parties and events, here is your opportunity! We still have spots left for few selected events. Go to www.whsfoundation.org/auction.html to sign up, and hurry, space is limited!

News from the Athletic Department and Athletes of the Year Congratulations to our male and female athletes of the Year, seniors Marcelous Chester-Riley and Fallon Falore. Marcelous was a standout on the football field for four years and Fallon was a lynchpin for two sports, soccer and track. Marcelous will be taking his talents to the Univeristy of Southern Virginia and Fallon will be heading up to Boise State. Good luck to all of our senior athletes, thank you for the many memories you have brought to Woodside over the past four years! Over the summer numerous activities will be taking place on campus related to athletics: the Woodside Football Camp, and open gym (including a clinic for middle school students in mid-July). Physical upgrades will take place in the Large Gym with a refinished floor and the swimming pool, which will have lights. Please remember to complete your athletic registration for 2017-18 by having your physical completed and registering on Sports Net, relevant links can be found on ‘Athletic Department Site’: http://www.woodsidehs.org/ATHLETICS/Athletic- Department/index.html. Please set your calendar for Wednesday, August 9th for the 4th annual ‘Athletic Kick-Off and BBQ’ sponsored by our Athletic Boosters Organization, festivities will begin at 5pm on Bradley Field. Remember that Fall Sports can begin on August 4th, check with relevant coaches for exact dates and times to begin gearing up for 2017-18! Enjoy your summer - go ‘Cats!!!! Chuck Velschow, Athletic Director

Welcome back to WHS for the 2017-18 school year! As many of you know our fall sports are already underway! The primary role of the Woodside High School Athletics Booster Organization (ABO) is to provide financial resources to help Woodside High School provide a comprehensive and high- quality sports program for our student athletes. The district provides funding for facilities, coaches, referees, transportation (some), but in fact, little money is available for basic sports supplies such as balls, nets, uniforms, helmets and other protective equipment, etc. Major purchases are typically not covered so the ABO helps fund items such as new water polo cages, a state of the art timing system for track, pitching machines, and cheer mats, and other capital equipment that can dramatically improve the quality of the Athletic program. The ABO adopted a new fund-raising approach last year whereby a player's parents and other donors were asked to contribute in two primary ways: directed donation by-sport, and un-directed for the general benefit of the athletics programs at Woodside. Below is a short financial update from last year, highlighting the $125k in total funds ($70k team-directed donations + $55k in ABO grants) we raised and passed through to our sports teams. Very importantly, with the launch of our new website last year and going forward, the ABO now strives to conduct all interactions online. This vastly simplifies life record keeping for the ABO and is much more convenient for you! We ask all families PLEASE to log on to the ABO site: http://www.woodsideathletics.org and register by creating an account for your family and athletes. You can make/manage all transactions using a credit card (donations/payments), and will stay informed. Plus, the account provides you a convenient record of all this information. Families can also visit our online store and purchase Spirit Wear! If you already have an account, simply log on now (at the start of the school year) and confirm or update your info so it is current and accurate for THIS academic year. The ABO is a volunteer-based organization and we are always looking for help! There are a number of ways to become involved. Please let us know by signing up on our website or emailing us directly. We look forward to an even more successful fundraising year for our athletic program and student athletes! Go Wildcats! Sincerely,

Michelle Bellomo ABO President [email protected]

Local High School Paper Woodside World Now Online UC Riverside’s California Digital Newspaper Collection expands to include local high school paper in searchable archive.

(May, 2017) WOODSIDE, Calif. – Woodside High School’s paper Woodside World recently became the first high school newspaper in California to be digitized and added to the massive California Digital Newspaper Collection (CDNC), according to Brian Geiger, Director of the University of California, Riverside’s Center for Bibliographical Studies & Research, which manages the CDNC.

The CDNC now contains past printed issues of Woodside World from 1959 to 2009, before the paper converted to digital copies. Anyone interested in taking a glimpse into the past or a walk down memory lane is encouraged to explore these issues at http://cdnc.ucr.edu.

The CDNC launched in 2007 to provide the public an online database that is text searchable and free to use. It now contains over 2 million pages from newspapers around the state, from the very first paper, the Californian, started in 1846, to contemporary titles delivered as PDFs. All issues are preserved as high- resolution TIFF images and processed to be fully text-searchable.

“Small newspapers and libraries increasingly cannot afford the cost of microfilming these publications,” said Geiger. “We see collecting PDFs as a way to save California’s printed history. We’re targeting small local weeklies, the ones that are least likely to be saving their papers.”

Previous Woodside HS journalism teacher Jenny Bratton spearheaded the project two years ago with a teacher grant from the Woodside High School Foundation. She enlisted her journalism students to sort through hundreds of existing issues of The Woodside World, which was the close equivalent to 2,000 pages . The issues were then shipped to Backstage Library Works in Bethlehem, PA., where each page was scanned to create archival digital images. Those images were then digitized following standards established by the Library of Congress to generate searchable digital files.

“We hope to include other high schools papers in the future,” said Geiger. “They are of course of interest to school alumni. More generally, researchers interested in exploring issues like student activism benefit from having access to multiple titles searchable in one archive.”

The CDNC is currently working with the California State Library to digitize at least one title per county up through 1923. They also regularly partner with local institutions to digitize their newspapers. And they have an ongoing partnership with Ancestry.com, which to date has digitized over 4 million pages that will be included in the CDNC.

The physical paper issues of the Woodside World were donated to the Historical Society and are now being housed in archival boxes to preserve them for posterity. They are available for public viewing by appointment.
