RANKS AND APPELLATIONS AIM • To enable course attendees get acquainted with the various ranks as used in UN missions. NOTES TO REMEMBER! • Different rank appellations in the world- a manifestation of sovereignty. • An emanation from individual nations or regional organisations (e.g. NATO, Warsaw Pact Alliances, bilateral or multilateral agreements etc) • An officer – normally commissioned by a political act of the commander-in-chief • In certain cases, military members from the rank and file who have attained the rank of Chief Warrant Officer are accorded the privilege of becoming officers after fulfilling other criteria. They are thus referred to as Enlisted Officers. TERMS TO KNOW 1. Rank and File Soldier. Any military member who gets engaged in the force through the lowest rungs. Between the rank of second class soldier and lance corporal, they may or may not become officers. 2. Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) An appellation referring to all sub-officers from the rank of sergeant to Chief Warrant Officer. 3. Enlisted soldiers: include members between the ranks of private and chief warrant officers.
