FREE STRIKING DISTANCE PDF Pamela Clare | 374 pages | 04 Dec 2013 | Penguin Putnam Inc | 9780425257357 | English | New York, NY, United States Striking Distance Movie Review | Popular Pittsburgh The majority of the filming of Striking Distance was done in Pittsburgh in Originally, the film was titled, Three Rivers, but was eventually changed to Striking Distance, so as to appeal Striking Distance a wide audience. And having 30 million dollars to spend you would believe that they had everything needed to bring put together a film that would have a healthy return on the producers investment, but this film left me unimpressed and bored. Striking Distance Movie Review. The film is interesting, and at times exciting. As luck would have it the murders Tom Hardy was investigating continued on his new beat, Striking Distance rivers of Pittsburgh. Interestingly enough, the only thing the river victims had in common was that they all knew Sgt. Tom Hardy. The story falls Striking Distance early when we see a man jump to his death in a Pittsburgh river and his body is never found. Maybe if the Mississippi flowed through here Striking Distance could buy it. But with the slow-moving nature of the Striking Distance, Monongahela and the Ohio, I felt this was Striking Distance stretch. Old films sometimes acquire unintended baggage. For this Pittsburgher the most enjoyable parts of the plus minutes I spent watching this tale were recognizing the players and remembering some of the good movies and TV shows they stared in. One especially entertaining aspect of the film was the high-speed car chases.

The previous year had seen the Seagram buyout of MCA-Universal, Time Warner’s purchase of the massive Turner Broadcasting System, and the launch of Dream- Works, the first new movie studio since the classical era. Then on August 1 came the bombshell that provoked Gabler’s editorial. Disney announced the acquisition of ABC and its parent conglomerate, Cap Cities, in a $19 billion deal – the second- largest merger in US history, which created the world’s largest media company. Disney CEO Michael Eisner also disclosed a quarter-billion-dollar deal with Mike Ovitz of Hollywood’s top talent agency, Creative Artists, to leave CAA and run the Disney empire. For Gabler, the Disney deals confirmed “a fundamental shift in the balance of power in Hollywood – really the third revolution in the relationship between industry forces.” Revolution I occurred nearly a century before with the formation of the Hollywood studios and the creation of a “system” that enabled them to con- trol the movie industry from the 1920s through the 1940s. Revolution II came with the postwar rise of television and the dismantling of the studio system by the courts, which allowed a new breed of talent brokers, “most notably Lew Wasserman of the Music Corporation of America [MCA],” to usurp control of the film industry.

  • Screening the LAPD
1 Screening the L.A.P.D.: Cinematic Representations of Policing and Discourses of Law Enforcement in Los Angeles, 1948-2003. by Robert Bevan University College London Ph.D. Thesis 2 Declaration I, Robert Bevan, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 3 Thesis Abstract This thesis examines cinematic representations of the L.A.P.D. within the context of discourses of law enforcement in Los Angeles and contends that these feature films constitute a significant strand within such discourse. This contention, which is based upon the various identifiable ways in which the films engage with contemporary issues, acknowledges that the nature of such engagement is constrained by the need to produce a commercially viable fictional entertainment. In four main chronological segments, I argue that it is also influenced by the increasing ethnic and gendered diversity of film-makers, by their growing freedom to screen even the most sensitive issues and by the changing racial and spatial politics of Los Angeles. In the 1940s and 1950s, the major studios were prepared to illustrate some disputed matters, such as wire-tapping, but represented L.A.P.D. officers as white paragons of virtue and ignored their fractious relationships with minority communities. In the aftermath of the Watts riot of 1965, racial tensions were more difficult to ignore and, under a more liberal censorship regime, film-makers―led by two independent African American directors―began to depict instances of police racism and brutality.

They called the company CBC Film Sales (Cohn-Brandt-Cohn). Incorporated in 1924, CBC became Columbia Pictures Corporation; films were created on Hollywood's Poverty Row, an area housing small production companies that churned out a large volume of low-budget westerns and B pictures. Columbia developed into to a major Hollywood studio by the 1930s due in part to the leadership of Harry Cohn and the talent of director Frank Capra. Capra contributed to a number of "firsts" for the studio including Columbia's first Academy Award for Best Picture of 1934 for It Happened One Night.
