Rare Has Been Developing Video Games for More Than Three Decades
Rare has been developing video games for more than three decades. From Jetpac on the ZX Spectrum to Donkey Kong Country on the Super Nintendo to Viva Pinata on Xbox 360, they are known for creating games that are played and loved by millions. Their latest title, Sea of Thieves, available on both Xbox One and PC via Xbox Play Anywhere, uses Azure in a variety of interesting and unique ways. In this document, we will explore the Azure services and cloud architecture choices made by Rare to bring Sea of Thieves to life. Sea of Thieves is a “Shared World Adventure Game”. Players take on the role of a pirate with other live players (friends or otherwise) as part of their crew. The shared world is filled with other live players also sailing around in their ships with their crew. Players can go out and tackle quests or play however they wish in this sandboxed environment and will eventually come across other players doing the same. When other crews are discovered, a player can choose to attack, team up to accomplish a task, or just float on by. Creating and maintaining this seamless world with thousands of players is quite a challenge. Below is a simple architecture diagram showing some of the pieces that drive the backend services of Sea of Thieves. The Many Lives of the Jetman: A Case Study in Video Game Analysis Will Brooker This article examines the changing meanings and forms of the computer game Jetpac, which was originally released by Ultimate for the ZX Spectrum in 1983 and has been recoded by individual programmers during the late 1990s, in at least three different shareware versions, for PC and Spectrum emulators. Through this analysis, it asks a simple question: how can we approach, and perhaps teach, the academic study of computer and video games? Introduction: Games and Theory At the present time, it seems that the study of video games is considered suitable for courses in technical production and for magazine and newspaper reviews, but not for academic degree modules or, with very few exceptions, for scholarly analysis [1]. Video games are a job for those at the design and coding end of the process, and a leisure pursuit for those at the consumption end. There exists very little critical framework for analysing this unique media form. This article suggests a possible set of approaches, based partially on the two pioneering studies of video games of the late 1990s: J.C. Herz’s Joystick Nation (London, Abacus 1997) and Steven Poole’s Trigger Happy (London: Fourth Estate, 2000). Both are exceptional and invaluable sallies into the field, yet both tend towards the journalistic, crafting nifty prose and snappy rhetoric at the expense of academic conventions. Poole, for instance, ends his early chapter sub-sections with slogan-neat but essentially meaningless tags such as “Kill them all”, [2] “You were just too slow” [3] “Go ahead, jump”[4] and, perhaps most glaringly, “The fighting game, like fighting itself, will always be popular”[5]. -

By Meghan Flannery Case History The History of Computer Games March 15, 2002 In my middle and early high school years, school social events were mostly dances, basketball games, and parties. By the time I was graduating from high school however, GoldenEye tournaments had become a standard all-school social event. The school would provide the televisions, and various students would donate the use of their Nintendo 64 systems, and a single elimination tournament would ensue until only the ultimate player was left standing. A video game had propelled itself and its genre of entertainment from the realms of social inadequacy into the social norm of teenage society. Suddenly everyone was playing the game, talking about the game, and integrating the language of the game into the teenage vernacular with a furry that conjured up images of Mario in 1989. Consequently, every console game released after GoldenEye was compared to it. What was it about this game that redefined the console game standard? The success of GoldenEye as a video game was parallel to the success of its movie counterparts. Beginning with Dr. No in 1962, the James Bond films set the standard for action movies. The actors and actresses never won Oscars for their performances in the series, and the films never won awards for special effects, and yet it became the most successful film series in movie history. The film series succeeded because it appealed to a wide variety of audiences, combined action with suspense, drama, and romance, and had a high entertainment value. -
