In Restoration and Eighteenth-Century studies, the Newer Criticism of the 1960's, with its distaste for exegesis of individual texts and historical reconstruction and its delight in synthesis and immediate relevance, has so far touched only Swift and Pope, whose absurdist and apocalyptical visions have been all too casily accommodated to the taste of the moment. Dryden and Johnson still await their rescue from the formalism, historicism, and neo-conservatism (or non commitment) that enabled the literary Cold-Warriors of the last two decades to recover the Neoclassicists from the disfavor and neglect of the Nineteenth Century and After. Because of the lag that once existed betw'een the academy and the avant-garde, it took scholars almost thirty years to catch up with T. E. Hulme and his followers, though somewhat less time to accept and establish the orthodoxy of the Fugitives and Agrarians. One factor which helped close those gaps, surely, was the retreat from radical and even liberal commitment after the Second World War (the period of Conservatism Revisited, The God tbat Failed, and Tbe End of Ideology), a relationship that must some day be studied in depth. Although we may now scorn the political timidity of the 1940's and 50's, we academics can still acknowledge, from our narrower (broader?) perspective, the beneficent effects of disengagement, especially in the study of Renaissance and Augustan literature. -

For everything. v ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Unsung, Unwavering: Nineteenth-Century Black Women’s Epistemologies and the Liberal Problematic by Regis Marlene Mann Doctor of Philosophy, Graduate Program in English University of California, Riverside, June 2013 Dr. Erica Edwards, Chairperson Unsung, Unwavering deploys African-Americanist and feminist literary criticism in order to problematize how scholars have read nineteenth-century African-American women’s activism and knowledge production. It simultaneously expands contemporary critical inquiry in two key ways: that is, I analyze nineteenth-century black women’s interrogation of the effects of liberalism as juridical, economic, and affective performance; and I unsettle sedimented perspectives of black resistance as inherently militant, male, and vernacular. The first three chapters, in particular, address the ways in which Harriet Wilson, Elizabeth Keckly, and Anna Julia Cooper undermine fundamental liberal and Enlightenment precepts including reason, individualism, and the privileging of a transcendental Subject. -

Loser! Failure: Why President Trump's Legal Narratives “Win”
Astonishingly Excellent Success or Sad! Loser! Failure: Why President Trump’s Legal Narratives “Win” with Some Audiences and “Lose” with Others Cathren Page While President Trump is often called a liar and various commentators have analyzed his rhetorical approach, little has been said about storytelling's role in his wins and losses. Trump’s narratives about legal issues enjoy wild success with his supporters, amuse some critics, and terrify others. Thus far into his presidency, his legal narratives have often failed with courts. With nearly sixty- three million American voters backing Trump, scholars and students of persuasion cannot ignore his successes. However, with over sixty- five million Americans voting against him and various court’s ruling against him, scholars and students of persuasion also cannot ignore his failures. Trump and his team use various effective narrative and rhetorical techniques. These techniques tap into his audiences’ deep frames, their strongly held values and predispositions. However, he has succeeded for reasons other than simply having an audience who liked his message. Although he regularly uses ethically questionable approaches, he also regularly uses certain rhetorical and narrative techniques that scholars and experts recommend. Nonetheless, the Trump team has also committed rhetorical errors. While these errors alienate his critics, the types of errors he commits are also particularly egregious to a judge making a determination in a lawsuit. This article identifies and lists the narrative techniques that the Trump team uses and divides them into the following categories: 1) universally successful techniques, 2) ethically questionable techniques, 3) stylistically controversial techniques, and 4) either carelessly composed or intentionally sloppy statements containing errors. -

The Unexpected Conservatism of Satire Jason Lux with Michael Edson English Department University of Wyoming 30 April 2020 Honors and English Honors Farson, Wyoming ABSTRACT Satire as a genre is often associated with progressive causes and liberal politics. Academics and common audiences alike see it as a form of punching up, of speaking truth to authority, challenging the status quo and potentially displacing or destabilizing established forms of political power. The majority of recent mainstream political satire in the U.S., such as that of the Onion, Jon Stewart and Trevor Noah’s The Daily Show or Stephen Colbert’s The Colbert Report, appears to affirm this view. This paper will argue that satire has overlooked conservative functions. Not only providing a false release of emotions and a flattering sense of intellectual or political agency, satire also introduces an ambiguity into political oppositions that can paralyze political and social change. What’s more, satire can covertly co-opt and divert the energies of those who present the largest threat to the status quo—those with advanced intellectual and creative capacities—who all the while believe that they are supporting progressive ends. Thus, although appearing progressive, satire serves conservative ends by co-opting and diverting progressive energies and reducing actual change to a minimum.
