Bicycles are his preferred mode of transportation, and he frequently biked to the theater during "Utopia's" nearly five-month run. But the musician landed in hot water last month when a clip resurfaced of him online in blackface. The promotional video was shot for "Stop Making Sense" in , as Byrne "interviewed" himself and portrayed a number of Black and brown journalists. He issued an apology on Twitter , calling it "a major mistake in judgment that showed a lack of real understanding. How could I have done that? I'm ashamed of this. Byrne says he hasn't written any new music inspired by this tumultuous year. But in the meantime, he's focusing on his Reasons to Be Cheerful project, which started as "self-therapy" and promotes positive news. People died to have the right to do this. Black people, women, all kinds of people have worked so hard to get this. And now to cavalierly go, 'I don't feel like showing up' or 'I'm busy that day? Just shut the expletive up. The original Talking Heads had such an incredible impact on everything that followed, that it is almost impossible to know where to begin. I can remember watching this, on its first showing: I was at school, and everyone talked about it the next day. This is not the kind of thing you would normally expect teenagers to discuss, but there is no getting away from the intelligence, originality and sheer power of these six plays. The monologue format allows Alan Bennett's genius for capturing natural speech and realistic characters to shine. His own performance, as Graham in "A Chip in the Sugar" is a treat, as Graham obviously has no idea of his own snobbery. Patricia Routledge's upright and constantly indignant Miss Ruddock, in "A Lady of Letters", has no concept of her own isolation, and the effect gradual effect it has on her. The subtlety and care in the script, and the gloriously tender and believable performances tug the heart-strings. Each of these six characters are so utterly real that they could be living next door: indeed, one of the recurring themes is that people do not know their neighbours anymore, and so much suffering could be alleviated if we were more community spirited. Thora Hird is the one everyone remembers: Doris, in "A Cream Cracker Under The Settee", has suffered a fall, and gradually realises that no-one will come to her aid. Her reminiscences about happier days, when the neighbours greeted each other and there was no need to lock the door, will bring a lump to the most cynical of throats. The superb turn of phrase moves from laugh-out-loud to tear-in-the-eye and back again: the writer and his actors have us in the palm of their hands. Add to this, Stephanie Cole finding her husband's death having far reaching effects on her family, but still keeping a brave face and "Soldiering On" "bloody psychiatrist! One of the most influential, pivotal, groundbreaking TV series of all time, and not one to be missed. You'll be quoting the highlights for weeks afterwards. Well, fancy! There's a cream cracker under the settee! Can't remember the last time I had cream crackers! That Zulema Looking for some great streaming picks? • You Didn't Read Our LOCKDOWN UPDATE No.5
'LOCKDOWN UPDATE' no.5 BBC & London Theatre Co. remaking Alan Bennett's Talking Heads with a stellar lockdown cast There can't be many amateur theatre companies that haven't produced their own series of Talking Heads shows... This week, filming began today on new productions of Alan Bennett’s critically acclaimed and multi-award-winning monologues, which first aired on BBC Television in 1988 and 1998. Ten of the original pieces will be re-made with the addition of two new ones written by Bennett last year. They are produced by Nicholas Hytner’s London Theatre Company and Kevin Loader, and will air in the coming months on BBC One. As the British public service broadcaster, the BBC has a key role to play in continuing to offer new programming for our audience at this time of national crisis. The contained nature of Bennett's monologues allowed the opportunity to tell timely and relevant stories while following the latest government guidelines on safe working practices during Covid-19. Alan Bennett told Sardines: "In such difficult circumstances, that the BBC should choose to remount both series of Talking Heads, and produce two entirely new ones, is a comfort and a huge compliment. I hope a new generation of actors will get and give as much pleasure as we did twenty and thirty years ago." The televised monologues will star the cream of today's acting establishment such as Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Martin Freeman (Sherlock Holmes), Tamsin Greig (Episodes), Maxine Peake (Silk) and Imelda Staunton (Flesh and Blood) to name just five.

He stayed to teach and research Medieval History at the University for several years. His collaboration, as writer and performer, with Dudley Moore, Jonathan Miller and Peter Cook, in the satirical review” Beyond The Fringe” at the 1960 Edinburgh Festival brought him instant fame. He gave up academia and turned to writing full time. His first stage play, “Forty Years On”, was produced in 1968.
