One of the products of the Enlightenment was the historical-critical method pioneered by Johann Salomo Semler ( –) and Johann David Michaelis ( –). is approach reached a peak in Harnack,1 with Zahn and Schlatter representing a conservative counterpoint to the prevailing scholarly climate. ese three scholars not only lived in the heyday of historical criticism, they also did their work at the onset of a new movement, the return to a theological interpreta- tion of the Bible. Stephen Neill and Tom Wright call this the “Re-entry of eology,”2 with the best-known representative of this movement being Karl Barth (–). Harnack, Zahn, and Schlatter, then, lived at a time when historical criticism was a formidable dam concealing increasing cracks that were gradually to give way to the “new” theological methods. Honoring and Perpetuating the Legacy of Dietrich Bonhoeffer The 2014 Charles H. Hackley Distinguished Lecture in the Humanities May 8, 2014 It is a great privilege to stand before you tonight and deliver the 2014 Charles H. Hackley Distinguished Lecture in the Humanities, and to receive this prestigious award in his name. As a child growing-up in Muskegon in the 1950s and 1960s, the name of Charles Hackley was certainly a respected name, if not an icon from Muskegon’s past, after which were named: the hospital in which I was born, the park in which I played, a Manual Training School and Gymnasium, a community college, an athletic field (Hackley Stadium) in which I danced as the Muskegon High School Indian mascot, and an Art Gallery and public library that I frequently visited. Often in going from my home in Lakeside through Glenside and then to Muskegon Heights, we would drive on Hackley Avenue. I have deep feelings about that Hackley name as well as many good memories of this town, Muskegon, where my life journey began. It is really a pleasure to return to Muskegon and accept this honor, after living away in the state of Minnesota for forty-six years. I also want to say thank you to the Friends of the Hackley Public Library, their Board President, Carolyn Madden, and the Director of the Library, Marty Ferriby. This building, in which we gather tonight, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, also holds a very significant place in the life of my family. My great-grandfather, George Alfred Matthews, came from Bristol, England in 1878, and after living in Newaygo and Fremont, settled here in Muskegon and was a very active deacon in this congregation until his death in 1921. -

1 From Village Boy to Pastor CHILDHOOD, YOUTH, AND STUDENT DAYS Rüdlingen is a small farming village in the Canton of Schaffhausen, situated in northern Switzerland. The village is surrounded by a beauti- ful countryside only a few miles downriver from the Rhine Falls. Fertile fields extend toward the river, and steep vineyards rise behind the village. The Protestant church sits enthroned high above the village. Almost all of the villagers belonged to the Protestant faith. Adolf Keller was born and raised in one of Rüdlingen’s pretty half-timbered houses in 1872. He was the eldest child born to the village teacher Johann Georg Keller and his wife Margaretha, née Buchter. Three sisters and a brother were born to the Kellers after Adolf.SAMPLE A large fruit and vegetable garden contributed to the upkeep of the family. For six years, Adolf Keller attended the primary school classes taught by his father. The young boy’s performance so conspicuously excelled that of his sixty peers that the highly regarded village teacher decided not to award his son any grades. Occasionally, Keller senior involved his son in the teaching of classes. Both parents were ecclesiastically minded. Keller’s father took his Bible classes seriously. Adolf was required to learn by heart countless Bible verses. His mother ran the village Sunday School. She was a good storyteller. Unlike her more austere husband, Keller’s mother represented an emotional piety. 1 Hans Joachim Iwand in Dortmund 1937-1945 Im Oktober 1937 ist Hans Joachim Iwand mit seiner Familie und dem ausgewiesenen Predigerseminar der Bekennenden Kirche in Ostpreußen in Dortmund angekommen. Iwand war durch die Geheime Staatspolizei ausgewiesen worden und seine Wahl war auf Westfalen gefallen, wo Fritz Heuner, der Pfarrer an St. Marien in Dortmund und ein Freund des Bloestauer Seminars war, wohnte. Damit war zunächst ein langer Irrweg zu Ende, der über Bloestau, das nordöstlich von Königsberg liegt, nach Jordan, ein ostbrandenburgisches Dorf im Kreis Meseritz, und dann nach Dortmund führte. Die Ausweisung Iwands und damit der Vikare der Bekennenden Kirche wurde damit begründet, dass Iwand die „kirchenpolitische Lage in völlig unsachgemäßer Weise erörtert und hierbei staatsfeindliche Reden geführt habe“.1 Hans Joachim Iwand wurde am 11. Juli 1899 in Schlesien im Dorf Schreibendorf als Sohn eines Pfarrers geboren. 1917 schrieb er sich an der Evangelischen Fakultät an der Friedrich-Wilhelms- Universität in Breslau ein. Dann wurde Iwand 1917 zum Wehrdienst eingezogen. 1921 schloss er sich kurzeitig einem Freikorps an. Ab 1919 studierte er wieder in Breslau. Dort traf er auf den jungen Professor Rudolf Hermann (1887 -1962), mit dem er besonders durch die Erforschung der Theologie Martin Luthers verbunden blieb. In seiner tiefgründigen und bis heute lesenswerten Schrift „Glaubensgerechtigkeit nach Luthers Lehre“ hat Iwand 1941 in Dortmund im Vorwort geschrieben: „Dass ich hierbei der Lutherforschung weithin zu großem Dank verpflichtet bin, werden Kenner heraushören. Eines Mannes möchte ich aber doch in diesem Vorwort in Dankbarkeit gedenken: Rudolf Hermann, Professor in Greifswald. Ihm verdanke ich – wie mancher andere, der damals nach dem Weltkrieg bei ihm studierte, dass wir diesen Eingang in Luthers Theologie fanden, dass wir hier selbst zu Theologen geworden sind.“2 Diese Schrift war Martin Niemöller gewidmet, der damals schon in Haft war. -

S.P.C.K. 22/6. We have heard a good deal recently of the demythologization of the New Testament demanded by Rudolf Bultmann, but apart from a few specialists it is doubtful whether many students know exactly what it is that Bultmann suggests, or what criticisms he has had to meet from contemporary German writers. To make good that unfortunate ignorance a symposium of statements, originally collected in German, has now been made available to the English speaking public, with an interesting appreciation by Austin Farrer. The most important of the series is, of course, the original essay by Bultmann entitled New Testament and Mythology. This is followed by a detailed and penetrating criticism by Julius Schniewind, which provokes Bultmann to what Farrer regards as the most careful and exact presentation of his view. Further contributions are made by E. Lohmeyer, H. Thielicke and F. K. Schumann, all of which touch on important aspects of the problem. In a final reply Bultmann tries particularly to defend himself against the charge of reinterpreting the Gospel in terms of current philosophy. To pronounce on a controversy which covers so much ground in such detail and with such an acuteness of theological perception is not easy in the space of a short review, for any judgment which is not backed up by definite evidence is bound to smack of the pontifical. -

August 1896 als Sohn des Fabrikanten Hermann Sch. (gest. 1922) und seiner Frau Maria geb. Stein (gest. 1920) gebo- ren. Er hatte eine ältere Schwester Maria (verheiratet Tappenbeck) und den 1898 geborenen Bruder Johannes, den späteren Oberkirchenrat. In der Korrespon- denz begegnet noch ein Onkel Paul. Nach dem Kriegsabitur 1914 meldete er sich freiwillig und wurde 1916 am Toten Mann vor Verdun schwer verwundet. Vom Lazarett aus begann er 1917 in Bonn mit dem Theologiestudium, zu dem er sich bereits im Barmer Schülerbibelkreis entschlossen hatte. RAO I Our study is chiefly confined to certain passages in St. Mark's Gospel which deal with the injunctions to secrecy in Christ's ministry, in the light of the theory of the ' Messianic Secret' put forth by the noted Gennan scholar, W. Wrede, on, the basis of these Markan passages. Wrede notes that in Mark there is a con stant effort made to show that Christ Jesus was .avoiding public claim of His Messiahship until the resurrection. In Wrede's view this arises .out of the dogmatic convictions of the· evangelist, to show that the resurrection vindicated the Messiahship of Christ which remained hidden during His lifetime. Indications ·for this in St. Mark's Gos.gel which Wrede pointed out are as follows:. 1. The way ,fn which the demons are represented by Mark as malting Him known as the Messiah. 2. The instances in which Christ sternly enjoins secrecy with regard to the demoniacs (Mark 1:25, 34; 3: 12, etc.), with regard to the healing of the sick (Mark 1 : 43-45 ; 5 : 43 ; 7 : 36 ; 8 : 26, etc.), and the caution to the disciples (Mark 8: 30; 9: 9). James Dunn PROFESSOR JIMMY DUNN is Lightfoot Professor Emeritus of Divinity at the University of Durham, and a Methodist local preacher. His many books include a three-volume history of the first 120 years of the faith (Christianity in the Making trilogy), and commentaries on Romans, Galatians, and Colossians and Philemon. [email protected] Chichester, UK This is a transcript of the 2016 Fernley-Hartley Lecture, which was delivered during the 2016 British Methodist Conference at the Lambeth Mission, London, and is published here with acknowledgement to the Fernley-Hartley Trust. It stands largely unchanged from its first delivery in the hope that the texture and tone of the lecture might also be retained. The article argues that answering the questions ‘Why four Gospels?’ and ‘Why only four?’ provides a clear picture of the character of the gospel of Jesus as ‘the same yet different’, as well as a challenge to today’s Christians to retell the good news in their own contexts with equal or equivalent effect. The article discusses the context in which the four canonical Gospels were recognised, pointing out that the term ‘gospel’ was coined in the process. The distinctive emphases of the Synoptics and John show how the same story can be told differently, an essential restatement of the same message for new and changing audiences.
