Donahue This dissertation traces the origins of the League of Nations movement during the First World War to a coalescent international network of ecumenical figures and Protestant politicians. Its primary focus rests on the World Alliance for International Friendship Through the Churches, an organization that drew Protestant social activists and ecumenical leaders from Europe and North America. The World Alliance officially began on August 1, 1914 in southern Germany to the sounds of the first shots of the war. Within the next three months, World Alliance members began League of Nations societies in Holland, Switzerland, Germany, Great Britain and the United States. The World Alliance then enlisted other Christian institutions in its campaign, such as the International Missionary Council, the Y.M.C.A., the Y.W.C.A., the Blue Cross and the Student Volunteer Movement. Key figures include John Mott, Charles Macfarland, Adolf Deissmann, W. H. Dickinson, James Allen Baker, Nathan Söderblom, Andrew James M. Donahue Carnegie, Wilfred Monod, Prince Max von Baden and Lord Robert Cecil. -

CONGDON* Abstract: Based on a thorough investigation of Karl Barth’s early writings, this article proposes a new interpretation of dialectical theology as fundamentally concerned with the issue of mission. Documents from 1914 and 1915 show that the turning point in Barth’s thinking about mission – and about Christian theology in general – occurred, at least in part, in response to a largely forgotten manifesto published in September 1914. This manifesto appealed to Protestants around the world to support Germany’s cause in the war on the grounds that they would be supporting the work of the Great Commission. Barth’s reaction to this document sheds light on the missionary nature of dialectical theology, which pursues an understanding of God and God-talk that does not conflate the mission of the church with the diffusion of culture. The term ‘dialectical theology’ is generally associated with notions like Christocentrism, God as wholly other, the infinite qualitative distinction between time and eternity, the negation of the negation, the analogy of faith (analogia fidei) and ‘faith seeking understanding’ (fides quaerens intellectum). These are all important concepts that have their place in articulating the theology that Karl Barth initiated.And yet, as important as questions of soteriology and epistemology undoubtedly are for Barth, documents from before and during his break with liberalism indicate that one of his central concerns was the missionary task of the church. -

One of the products of the Enlightenment was the historical-critical method pioneered by Johann Salomo Semler ( –) and Johann David Michaelis ( –). is approach reached a peak in Harnack,1 with Zahn and Schlatter representing a conservative counterpoint to the prevailing scholarly climate. ese three scholars not only lived in the heyday of historical criticism, they also did their work at the onset of a new movement, the return to a theological interpreta- tion of the Bible. Stephen Neill and Tom Wright call this the “Re-entry of eology,”2 with the best-known representative of this movement being Karl Barth (–). Harnack, Zahn, and Schlatter, then, lived at a time when historical criticism was a formidable dam concealing increasing cracks that were gradually to give way to the “new” theological methods. Honoring and Perpetuating the Legacy of Dietrich Bonhoeffer The 2014 Charles H. Hackley Distinguished Lecture in the Humanities May 8, 2014 It is a great privilege to stand before you tonight and deliver the 2014 Charles H. Hackley Distinguished Lecture in the Humanities, and to receive this prestigious award in his name. As a child growing-up in Muskegon in the 1950s and 1960s, the name of Charles Hackley was certainly a respected name, if not an icon from Muskegon’s past, after which were named: the hospital in which I was born, the park in which I played, a Manual Training School and Gymnasium, a community college, an athletic field (Hackley Stadium) in which I danced as the Muskegon High School Indian mascot, and an Art Gallery and public library that I frequently visited. Often in going from my home in Lakeside through Glenside and then to Muskegon Heights, we would drive on Hackley Avenue. I have deep feelings about that Hackley name as well as many good memories of this town, Muskegon, where my life journey began. It is really a pleasure to return to Muskegon and accept this honor, after living away in the state of Minnesota for forty-six years. I also want to say thank you to the Friends of the Hackley Public Library, their Board President, Carolyn Madden, and the Director of the Library, Marty Ferriby. This building, in which we gather tonight, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, also holds a very significant place in the life of my family. My great-grandfather, George Alfred Matthews, came from Bristol, England in 1878, and after living in Newaygo and Fremont, settled here in Muskegon and was a very active deacon in this congregation until his death in 1921. -

Adolf Keller * 7. Februar 1872 in Rüdlingen. † 10. Februar 1963 Adolf Keller ist in seinem Heimatort Rüdlingen als ältester Sohn des dortigen Lehrerehepaars Johann Georg und Margarita Keller-Buchter geboren. Der Vater muss ein strenger, doch geistiger Mann gewesen sein, die Mutter dagegen eine unendlich gütige und liebevolle Frau mit pietistischer Frömmigkeit. Von seinen Vorfahren väterlicherseits, die seit vielen Generationen Weinbauern waren, mag Keller seinen arbeitsamen, nüchternen, und bodenständigen Charakter geerbt haben, der zugleich Freude am hochwertigen Kultivieren hat. Im Weinbauerndorf Rüdlingen hat Keller mit seinen vier z. T. wesentlich jüngeren Geschwistern eine glückliche Jugend erlebt. Wenn er später in einer erbaulichen Betrachtung über die Heimat ganz allgemein schreibt, dass sie «etwas viel Gewaltigeres als Ge- wohnheit», dass sie vielmehr «eine geistige Macht, eine Prägung von innen her» sei, so gilt das für ihn in besonderem Masse. Von seinem zwölften Altersjahr an geniesst er den üblichen Lateinunterricht für das Gymnasium beim Ortspfarrer, lernt aber zugleich bei dessen weitgereisten Tochter Französisch und Englisch und zudem noch das Klavierspiel. Durch diesen freundschaftlichen Unterricht weitet sich Kellers Horizont weit über das damals übliche Mass hin aus, zumal mit der Zeit auch gemeinsam klassische französische und englische Literaturwerke gelesen werden. Klavier spielt Keller zeit seines Lebens mit grosser Freude und einigem Können und findet damit später oft leicht Zugang zu Menschen, mit denen er lange verbunden bleibt. Kurz, dieses Pfarrhaus ist für ihn, wie er später schreibt-, «eine Quelle von Glück, Erkenntnis und phantasievoller Freundschaft», hier geniesst er «erste Kulturspeise». Dies Pfarrhaus mag den entscheidenden Anstoss gegeben haben, dass Keller später den Pfarrerberuf ergreift. -

August 1896 als Sohn des Fabrikanten Hermann Sch. (gest. 1922) und seiner Frau Maria geb. Stein (gest. 1920) gebo- ren. Er hatte eine ältere Schwester Maria (verheiratet Tappenbeck) und den 1898 geborenen Bruder Johannes, den späteren Oberkirchenrat. In der Korrespon- denz begegnet noch ein Onkel Paul. Nach dem Kriegsabitur 1914 meldete er sich freiwillig und wurde 1916 am Toten Mann vor Verdun schwer verwundet. Vom Lazarett aus begann er 1917 in Bonn mit dem Theologiestudium, zu dem er sich bereits im Barmer Schülerbibelkreis entschlossen hatte. Entscheidenden Eindrücke empfing er durch Adolf Schlatter in Tübingen, es folgte ein Aufenthalt in Münster, wiederum unterbrochen durch die Behandlung einer Lungenkrank- heit.
