The gifted Schulin started his career as a steward under the Franconian-born Danish Crown Princess Sophie Magdalene's brothers. Later he moved to Denmark and worked for Christian VI. Schulin had a long career especially within foreign policy.

Johan Friedrich Gerhard was like Schulin born in Franconia. They knew each other well, and it was Schulin who arranged the contact to the Danish royal family in 1741, where Christian VI bought a work by Gerhard. In 1742 the painter received Danish citizenship and was paid for two paintings painted on copper. It could be the present portraits. He always painted on copper.

883_antik_s016-144_malerier.indd 27 01/11/2018 16.04 128 SEBASTIAN VRANCX b. Antwerp 1573, d. s.p. 1647 The sacking of the Dutch village Wommelgem. C. 1630. Signed with monogram VS (on the hind leg of the brown/white horse). Oil on canvas. 118 x 174 cm. The sacking of the village Wommelgem near Antwerp by Dutch troops on 26 May 1589, was a subject matter that Vrancx painted on a least four occasions. Besides the present work three other paintings are known; one in the Louvre, Paris, (inv. 1104 - R.F. 1182), one in the Museum Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf (inv. 47), and one in a private collection, Belgium. Furthermore, a related drawing is known. It is now at The State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg (inv. OP-14237). It is interesting to notice that on the present painting soldiers are about to break the door of the church while in the versions at the Louvre and Kunst- palast the church has fallen and is set on fire.

Few Flemish painters have formed the theme of battle scenes as profoundly as Sebastian Vrancx. Vrancx, an officer in the Antwerp Civic Guard, could undoubtedly use his first hand military experience as inspiration for his depictions of battle scenes. The subject matter, which he was among the first Flemish artists to develop, followed him throughout his career, and today roughly half of his known works consists of military and battle scenes.

It is tempting to think that working on grand scale painting like the present work, Vrancx would have needed help from studio assistants. However, in two letters of 1624, written by the Antwerp art dealers Goetkint to their business partner Christian van Immerseel in Seville, they write that: "Vrancx has plenty to do but refuses to employ studio assistants, which means that work takes a long time. He does not allow copies to be put into circula- tion". See: J. Denucé, "Brieven en documenten betreffend Jan Brueghl I en II", in Bronnen voor de geschiedenis van de Vlaamsche Kunst, III, Antwerp 1934, pp. 45-49, nos. XVII-XIX.

Today it is still debated if Vrancx employed studio assistants and if so at which scale.

Christian IV's coronation procession 1596. Preliminary work for a tapestry in the Great Hall at Frederiksborg Castle. Re- constructed after Karel van Mander's composition based on a pencil drawing by Heinrich Hansen from 1859. Signed and dated RxChr. 1914, and inscribed Rekonstruktion efter v. Manderns komposition (reconstruction after the composition of v. Manderns). Oil on canvas. 103 x 150 cm. Exhibited: Charlottenborg 1915 no. 109.

The Great Hall or the Dance Hall, as it was called in the time of Christian IV, was beautifully equipped with a "Trompeterstol" (A balcony for the musicians) and a fireplace with ornaments and figures of silver. On the walls hung tapestries woven especially for this Hall by Karel van Mander in Delft (1579-1623), the father of the well-known portrait painter with the same name (1609-1670).

The tapestries depicted "The Coronation of Christian IV in 1596" and "Scenes from the Kalmar War 1611-1613". A total of 22 tapestries made by van Mander were lost, when flames tore through the castle in 1859.

Heinrich Hansen and F. C. Lund made several sketches and paintings around 1858 - before the fire in 1859 - of different interiors in the castle. It has therefore been possible to reconstruct some of the rooms, and today we also have knowledge of how the coronation tapestry looked like.

Otto Bache also used Karel van Mander's motif reconstructed by either Heinrich Hansen or F. C. Lund to paint his version of "the Coronation 1596" in his famous painting from 1887 at the Museum of National History at Frederiksborg Castle, Hillerød, (inv.no. A 376). It's a free depiction, where for example Christian IV's men have got the faces of the artist's personal friends. DKK 50,000-75,000 / € 6,700-10,000

132 PAINTER UNKNOWN, 19TH CENTURY Portrait of the Danish scientist Johan Christian Fabricius (Tønder 1745- Kiel 1808). Unsigned. Indistinctly inscribed in the upper left corner TV VERO V...[?] Oil on panel. 40 x 53 cm. Renaissance style frame. Johan Christian Fabricius was a Danish natural scientist and economist who achieved a great level of international renown, especially within the study of insects and plants. He was a student of Carl von Linné. Fabricius was an incredibly diligent scientist and well-travelled. He studied and taught at universities in Germany, Holland, , Italy, France, etc.

Fabricius is here portrayed as a typical Renaissance man with his scientific attributes in front of him in the form of an insect, a leaf and a magnifying glass. His Nordic background is highlighted by his blue eyes and red-blonde hair. In his hand, he holds one of his scientific publications. The painting is done in a characteristic Italian Renaissance style.

The present painting is a fine example of how masterfully I. L. Jensen could reproduce all types of flowers to make them appear like in nature. The pink roses, the orange garden nasturtium and the red lilies are to be mentioned. In addition, Jensen has found some rare conches that form a small still life on the sill. The Greek vase is probably made by Peter Ipsen (P. Ipsens Enke), who later opened a shop of his own in Bredgade 33, now the saleroom of Bruun Rasmussen. During Rørbye's Grand Tour from 1834 to 1837, he travelled to both Italy, Greece and Turkey, and on 31 July 1835, he arrived in the town of Amalfi. On 18 August, he commences the present study and finishes it on 31 August. He paints under the open sky, sitting in front of the motif on the square. In his travel journal, he vividly describes all the funny incidents and shenanigans that were part of sitting and painting out in the open air surrounded by Amalfi's curious citizens:

18 August: Today, I began painting my study at the square, which will be a hard nut to crack, but I'm remaining calm since I have hired André, the cicerone’s son, and he keeps the boys and other gawkers at bay. It is incredible how one can treat the Neapolitans. I'm almost sitting like a king here.

19 August: I painted again this morning at the square. The piece will, as I see it, take a while if it's going to be done right. Nor is it possible for my little police officer to keep everyone at a distance. The local notabilities are just as big layabouts as the rest of the townspeople and are keen to see the work progress since they are certainly not stingy with their praise.

20 August: When I painted at the square today, I did not have André to keep the peace, since he had to show some strangers around. Sian, the woman at whose boutique I am sitting, took André’s place with her son the tailor, but the peace was not kept as well today.

21 August: I have a thousand distractions to contend with while I’m painting in the morning at the square. It happens sometimes, for instance, that the boys will not listen, when André asks them to leave, and then Sian immediately comes with a big stick and the tailor with his scissors to help André drive everyone to flight. I am under their special protection and am praised immensely to their acquaintances.

22 August: Judging by my spectators’ praise, I think my work during the mornings fairs well. What especially arouses their astonishment is that you can see the prisoners behind the bars in the jail and the Aqua Fresca boutique. This is clearly to their liking. Otherwise, the work certainly keeps me occupied.

23 August: It has been a very fun day: first, I drew figures for my painting at the square surrounded by an enormous crowd whose astonishment over my ability to draw so many people so quickly reached an even higher level.

24 August: People are almost impossible to keep away in the morning while I paint. I should probably see it as a sign of flattery, as they tell me that no one has yet depicted it so beau- tifully. I hear St. Andreas and the Boutique with Aqua Fresca mentioned a thousand times.

25 August: Today, it did not go well with the ‘police’, since Mother Sian and the tailor were in Salerno to buy salt. Her remedy from yesterday, where she kept people from sitting beside me on the beams by chasing them away with a broom, could therefore not be used today.

27 August: While the weather was far from good, I painted at the square this morning to finish my study as soon as possible, since I am almost broke, and Bindesbøll, of whom I have borrowed money, is now in Pompeii.

28 August: The weather was bad, I painted a little in the morning, albeit more and more bothered by people, but they are all incredibly polite. Take for instance the pharmacist,

(29 and 30 August: Martinus Rørbye was ill and did not paint on the work).

31 August: Today, I finally finished my study of the square. I am also not sure whether I had been able to handle the overcrowded atmosphere much longer, and since I do not now have the opportunity to commence a new work, with letters waiting for me in Naples, I prefer to leave for this destination in haste. (The painter Martinus Rørbye’s travel journals 1834-1837, transcript of the original manuscript by Georg Nygaard).

In 1837, Rørbye has just returned to Copenhagen after his Grand Tour. He has brought home a lot of studies, drawings, sketches, etc. from all the places he has been and several of these are immediately exhibited upon his return and several works are enthusiastically reviewed in Kunstforeningen’s magazine Kunstbladet.

About this painting Kunstbladet among other things writes: "The perspective is excellent and allows the church with its large staircase to take a grand step into the background. The, to the viewer, more closely situated houses with their bou- tiques and a building facade with the title “VILREFII” [Viva Il Re Ferdinando Secondo (Long Live King Ferdinand II - King of the Two Sicilies 1830-59] are very picturesque, and the simple eateries on the street with the surrounding customers are reproduced naturally and truthfully. Around the great fountain [with a sculpture of Andreas], the wives are gathered to fill jars and bowls with cold water. The carelessly placed tomatoes, apples, pumpkins, melons, etc. in the foreground, verify that you are witnessing a land of plenty. The powerful, blue sky and the strong sunshine are exquisitely reproduced, one almost feels the warmth of the South. However, if we allow ourselves to add one comment to this painting it would be that a couple of the figures placed as vivid décor seem to be a bit too long." (Kunstbladet, February 1838, No. 1, p. 3).

Knud Voss, "Guldalderens Malerkunst. Dansk Arkitekturmaleri 100-1850", Cph. 1968, mentioned pp. 186-188 and reproduced p. 187.

"Among the results of this trip in Southern Italy belongs an immensely beautiful archi- tectural painting, depicting the square of Amalfi [...] The main feature of the painting is the medieval church of San Andrea with its 60 steps up to the entrance hall. Despite large differences in style, from the Medieval-Norman style of the bottom to the Baroque style above, the facade of the building appears as a solid whole through the red-yellow clay colour used in both sections. To the left is the Campanile, which according to our Baedeker [popular guidebook] dates from 1276. In the painting it is kept in watercolours of red, blue, green and greyish hues, and to the sides, the church building is surrounded by genuine houses in bright colours, all stacked together over the centuries to form an adventurous spectacle, like a magnificent piece of Oriental art." (p. 186).

On the reverse certified by the painter's wife Ida Hammershøi: "Malt af Vilh. Hammershøi, attesteres: Ida Hammershøi" (Painted by Vilh. Hammershøi, certified: Ida Hammershøi). Oil on canvas laid on panel. 38 x 28 cm. In the profound and newly published book on Hammershøi, the authors describe this motif of the woman with her back turned, which is so characteristic of Hammershøi’s paintings, and they describe the close connection of the subject with contemporary photography, which greatly fascinated Hammershøi, and which he to a large degree used in his works.

"Like the photographers Félex Nadar (1820-1910), Onésipe Aguado de las Marismas (1830- 1893) and many other contemporary artists, Hammershøi was interested in motifs with necks and figures with their back turned. The motifs often appear enigmatic because we can get so close without seeing the figure's face. And apparently without the figure seeing us. The neck motifs are particularly oriented towards a sense of desire in a photograph because it includes the awareness of the photographer, who can take the picture while the model cannot see what is going on. Hammershøi transfers this intense photographic situation to for instance his painting…" "The neck is the subconscious part of the face, it is said, but pictures like these deprive them- selves of any sort of psychoanalytical interpretations. They are situated in a field between reality and artificiality. The artificial consists of the entirety of the constructed mise-en- scène: it is clear that the artists have determined how the models should pose and turn their back to the viewer. These are not random snapshots, but as viewers, we still often accept the idea since it is seductive and exciting to approach the subject from this angle." (Annette Rosenvold Hvidt and Gertrud Oelsner, "Vilhelm Hammershøi, på sporet af det åbne billede” (Vilhelm Hammershøi, in search of the open image), 2018, p. 144 (in Danish)).

The motif on this painting – the woman seen from the back – occurs in a number of Hammershøi’s interior paintings.

Here described as his wife Ida seen from behind, but it is rather the characteristic features of the sister – her smooth hair, ear and neck as seen in other portraits of her by Hammershøi – than those of his wife.

Alfred Bramsen (1857-1932) was actually a dentist, but he is today mainly known as an art collector and more specifically as the patron for and collector of works by Vilhelm Hammershøi. In 1918, he published, together with Sophus Michaëlis, the work "Vilhelm Hammershøi, Kunstneren og hans Værk" (Vilhelm Hammershøi, the Artist and His Work).

Bramsen's works by Hammershøi were inherited by his daughter Karen Bramsen (1877- 1970), and she married Gustav Falck (1874-1955). Gustav Falck was an art historian, and in 1925 he became 's successor as director of the National Gallery of Denmark. Oil on canvas. 50 x 57 cm. Absalon's Court (Absalons Gård) was built in 1901-02 and initially named the Hotel Bristol. The architect was Vilhelm Fischer (1868-1914). The Hotel Bristol was closed in 1917, and the building was acquired by the insurance company Absalon, which renamed the building Absalon's Court and trans- formed it into offices. Together with Copenhagen City Hall and the Palace Hotel, Absalon's Court is the most distinctive building from the beginning of the 20th century on the City Hall Square in Copenhagen.

Julie Eckersberg, "Optegnelser om hendes Fader C. W. Eckersberg", Copenhagen 1917, reproduced p. 21.

Provenance: C. W. Eckersberg´s daughters (1898).

Hannover describes how Eckersberg's students studied and worked in his studio. They stood with their easels at the window facing the gate and often practised by drawing or painting the view from this exact window. Furthermore, Hannover describes, in reference to this drawing, Eckersberg's studio in the following way: "In the large room there was only a few chairs, the table on which he made his colours, a colour box, a desk in the middle of the room, a Sofa and an old closet in which he kept his drawings. Eckersberg stored his few but good books, among them Hans Christian Ørsted's "Aanden i Naturen" (The soul in nature) and Alexander von Humboldt's "Kosmos", in a walled-in closet. In a corner stood a “Gliedermann” puppet, which he particularly in his later years used quite a lot (Hannover p. 293). DKK 25,000-30,000 / € 3,350-4,000

883_antik_s016-144_malerier.indd 139 01/11/2018 16.10 256 TITANIC Post card autographed and signed by Jacob [Christian Milling]. Dated and stamped in Southampton, April 10 [19]12. The only known Danish postcard written by the Danish passenger on the RMS Titanic, machine inspector Jacob Christian Milling (1863-1912). Milling was one of 13 Danes on the fateful maiden voyage across the Atlantic aboard the infamous ship, which at the time was considered unsinkable. Milling was one of the 1490 passengers who did not survive the maritime disaster on the night between 14 and 15 April 1912. Milling was employed at "Sydfyenske Jernbaner” (Southern Funen Railways) and highly respected for his knowledge and his ability to construct locomotive parts. In 1912, he was granted leave for a two-month paid study tour in the United States – something he was looking forward to. The country was not unknown territory for him. In his youth, Milling lived for a time in Portland, Oregon, where he worked as an engineer. The postcard, written to Milling's wife, Augusta, was sent from Southampton on the morning of Milling’s departure with the ship, where he had purchased a 2nd class tick- et. While writing this card, Milling was waiting with excitement in his hotel room at the South Western Hotel in Southampton, and he could see the mighty ship from his window: ”Kære Augusta! Dette er det sidste du hører fra mig fra denne Side. Jeg sender maaske en Trådløs, der som det ikke er for dyrt. Jeg bor på Banens Hotel, det er ikke bil- ligt men bekvemt. Fra mit Vindue kan jeg se Skibet over i Dokken. Hvordan har de Gamle det? Hils dem og Børnene mange gange. Mange Hilsener til Eder alle. Fra Jacob". ("Dear Augusta! This is the last thing you will hear from me from this side of the Atlantic. I may send a wireless if it is not too expensive. I am staying at Banen’s Hotel, it’s not cheap but comfortable. From my window, I can see the ship in the dock. How are the old folks? Send them and the children my greetings. Many greetings to all of you. From Jacob.” ) Milling sent the postcard and boarded the ship, which he inspected in detail. A few days later (14 April) he sent a "Wireless" telegram from the ship to Augusta. He stated in a pre-arranged code (ABANAPAS) that everything was fine: "All is well, calm weather, the ship is fine, I am enjoying myself, good travel companions, a wonderful trip".

The telegram reached the family a few hours after Milling had perished in the ice-cold Atlantic Ocean. Milling was found as body #271 and taken to Halifax Canada, from where he was shipped out via Boston on board the "C.F. Tietgen" and sent to Copen- hagen on 16 May 1912. Incidentally, another body of a well-known Dane, the author Herman Bang, was brought back to Denmark on the same ship. Bang had died during a reading tour in the United States. Jacob Milling was buried on Assistens Cemetery in Copenhagen on 3 June 1912.

There are no known letters, documents or records from Danes aboard the Titanic available on the free market, and the postcard here can therefore be regarded as an important document, which still functions as a vivid reminder for many people of the historic disaster.
