Have there been any crackdowns upon Fatah members over the last 15 years? 4. What kind of relationship exists between Fatah and the Jordanian authorities? RESPONSE 1. Please provide background on the issue of Jordanian citizenship for persons of West Bank Palestinian descent. Most Palestinians in Jordan hold a Jordanian passport of some type but the status accorded different categories of Palestinians in Jordan varies, as does the manner and terminology through which different sources classify and discuss Palestinians in Jordan. The webpage of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) states that: “All Palestine refugees in Jordan have full Jordanian citizenship with the exception of about 120,000 refugees originally from the Gaza Strip, which up to 1967 was administered by Egypt”; the latter being “eligible for temporary Jordanian passports, which do not entitle them to full citizenship rights such as the right to vote and employment with the government”. -

National curriculum 1.1a, 1.2a, 1.2c, 2.2a, 2.2b, 2.2c Materials: photocopies of the role play cards Lesson Plan Starter ♦ Begin the class by reminding/informing students that when Israel was established in 1948, over two thirds of the indigenous Palestinian population fled or were expelled. These people and their descendents are refugees and have not been allowed to return home. Their right to return home, known as the Right of Return is enshrined in international law. Activity ♦ Split the students into groups of five and give each student a character card. The characters are: - a Jewish Israeli citizen moved to Israel from the US - a Palestinian refugee living in a refugee camp in Lebanon - a Palestinian refugee living in London - a Palestinian refugee living in Gaza - a Jewish Israeli citizen born in Israel N.B—The religion of the Israeli citizens are noted because Israel conceives of itself as a Jewish state. The non-Jewish citizens of Israel are Palestinians and are in effect second class citizens. They are not represented here, as that would have meant too many characters espousing the Right of Return. ♦ The characters will discuss the following questions ◊ Where should the refugees go? Is the Right of Return valid? ◊ Can the Right of Return be given up? ◊ Who is responsible for ensuring that refugees’ rights are upheld? ◊ Should the refugees get compensation? If so, who from? ◊ What would peace and justice look like to you? Plenary ♦ Bring the class together for a group discussion about the questions raised and the students’ reactions. -

Hungarian Historical Review 3, no. 3 (2014): 494–528 Antal Molnár A Forgotten Bridgehead between Rome, Venice, and the Ottoman Empire: Cattaro and the Balkan Missions in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries A key element in the history of the missions that departed from Rome as of the middle of the sixteenth century is the functioning of the mediating structures that ensured the maintenance of the relationship between Rome as the center of the Holy Roman Empire and the territories where the missionaries did their work. On the Dalmatian coast of the Adriatic Sea, Ragusa, which today is the city of Dubrovnik, was the most important bridgehead, but Cattaro, today Kotor, also played a significant role as a point of mediation between Rome and the Ottoman Empire. My intention in this essay is to present the many roles of Cattaro in the region, focusing in particular on its role in the maintenance of communication between Rome and missions to the Balkans. Cattaro never lost its Balkan orientation, even following the weakening of economic ties and the loss of its episcopal jurisdiction, which had extended over parishes in Serbia in the Middle Ages. Rather, in the sixteenth century it grew with the addition of a completely new element. From 1535 to 1786 Cattaro was the most important center of the postal service between Venice and Istanbul. As of 1578, the management of the Istanbul post became the responsibility of the Bolizza family. Thus the family came to establish a wide network of connections in the Balkans. I examine these connections and then offer an analysis of the plans concerning the settlement of the Jesuits in Cattaro. -

GLObaL LEADER ON StatISTICS ON REfugEES Trends at a Glance 2015 IN REVIEW Global forced displacement has increased in 2015, with record-high numbers. By the end of the year, 65.3 million individuals were forcibly displaced worldwide as a result of persecution, conflict, generalized violence, or human rights violations. This is 5.8 million more than the previous year (59.5 million). In the Republic of Turkey, an early history text provided the definition of being a Turk as "any individual within the Republic of Turkey, whatever his faith who speaks Turkish, grows up with Turkish culture and adopts the Turkish ideal is a Turk." Today the word is primarily used for the inhabitants of Turkey, but may also refer to the members of sizeable Turkish-speaking populations of the former lands of the Ottoman Empire and large Turkish communities which been established in Europe (particularly in Germany, France, and the Netherlands), as well as North America, and Australia. Department of Law Spring Term 2015 Master’s Thesis in International Law 30 ECTS Statelessness and Nationality The Case of Non-Citizens in Latvia Author: Maria Hellborg Supervisor: Professor Inger Österdahl Summary Following its restoration as an independent state in the 1990s, the new Republic of Latvia inherited a significant population of former citizens of the Soviet Union who resided legally in the country, but were not given Latvian citizenship. The situation of these "non-citizens" of Latvia remains an unresolved issue, which has bearing on international law by its close connection to the concepts of nationality and statelessness. The issue also holds importance because of its implications for Latvia as a country, and for its consequences in relation to regional stability. From a perspective of contemporary international law this thesis will examine whether the non-citizens of Latvia are to be considered as constituting stateless individuals. The thesis will also address the question of whether the Latvian non-citizens are, through their legal status, limited in their access to human rights. Finally the thesis will discuss how the issue of non- citizens affects regional stability through the Latvia-Russia relationship.
