This summary has been prepared in compliance with the procedures and operational policies of the African Development Bank through its Integrated Safeguards System (ISS) for Category 1 projects. The project description and rationale are first presented, followed by the legal and institutional framework in the Republic of Tunisia. A brief description of the main environmental conditions is presented, and then the road programme components are presented by their typology and by Governorate. The summary is based on the projected activities and information contained in the 60 EIAs already prepared. It identifies the key issues relating to significant impacts and the types of measures to mitigate them. It is consistent with the Environmental and Social Management Framework (ESMF) developed to that end. -

Sociétés, dynamiques de peuplement et mutations des systèmes de production traditionnels Henri GUILLAUME et Habiba NOURI Introduction La région de la Jeffara est depuis l'Antiquité le théâtre de mouve ments de populations et de dynamiques complexes d'occupation spatiale marquées par des phases de flux et de reflux de communautés entre les différents types de milieux physiques composant l'espace régional (plaine littorale, massif montagneux, confins désertiques sahariens). De par sa situation géographique et la configuration de sa plaine côtière, la Jeffara est la seule voie de passage naturelle facile entre la Tunisie et la Tripolitaine, et plus largement entre le Maghreb et le Machrek (Lissir, 1993). Mais l'histoire de cette région ne tient pas au seul fait qu'elle constitue un « passage obligé », Elle a aussi été le théâtre de dynamiques d'occupation humaine et d'exploitation du milieu dont l'article de Ben Ouezdou, dans cet ouvrage (partie 1), révèle l'ancienneté à travers de nou veaux éclairages et hypothèses. C'est dire toute la puissance de cet ancrage historique qui porte fortement la « signature » des hommes sur leur environnement et leurs capacités d'adaptation à des milieux contraignants. Dans le prolongement de cette mise en perspective, cet article a pour objet d'analyser les grandes lignes du processus de peuplement et des principales mutations connues par la Jeffara tunisienne, au cours des derniers siècles, dans les modes d'occupation de l'espace et d'usage des ressources naturelles. Summary Environmental and Social Management Plan Project Name : Treated Wastewater Quality Improvement Project Project Number : P - TN - EBA - 001 Country : Republic of Tunisia Department : OWAS Division : OWAS.2 1. Brief Description of the Project and Key Environmental and Social Components 1.1 This project benefitting about 3963 419 people, will help to improve the performance of sanitation services and the quality of treated wastewater (TWW) through 30 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) distributed in 17 Governorates. The project will be implemented from 2012 to 2016, comprising a series of operations under two components (A and B) aimed respectively at: (i) upgrading sanitation facilities by overhauling the water and sludge systems and transfer networks, and establishing remote monitoring and management systems; (ii) building the capacity of the National Sanitation Agency (ONAS) through assistance for studies, works monitoring and control, participation in training, procurement of operating equipment and project management. These operations will be implemented at a total cost of UA 33.30 million or TND 73.67 million, financed to the tune of 88% by the Bank and 12% by the Tunisian Government. 1.2 The project, which includes social, environmental and economic dimensions and is classified under the Bank’s Environmental and Social Category 2, fits in perfectly with the country’s 12th Economic and Social Development Plan covering the 2010-2014 period as well as the comprehensive approach adopted by Tunisia for promoting integrated water resources management as part of the 2030-2050 long-term strategy. It will contribute to achieving one of ONAS’ strategic objectives, which is attaining a 50% TWW reuse rate by 2016. -

Saadaoui, Ž. Balážová, Z. Gálová (2020). Genetic diversity and relationship of Tunisian castor (Ricinus communis L.) genotypes revealed by SSR markers-.Genetika, Vol 52, No.2, 765-776. The aim of this study was to assess genetic diversity within the set of 55 Tunisian castor genotypes using 20 SSR primers. PCR amplification of DNA using 20 primers for SSR analysis produced 141 DNA fragments that could be scored in all 55 genotypes of castor. The number of amplified fragments varied from 4 (Rco 15) to 10 (Rco 29 and Rco 33). Of the 141 amplified bands, all 141 were polymorphic, with an average of 7.05 polymorphic bands per primer. The polymorphism information content (PIC) value varied from 0.719 (Rco 15) to 0.879 (Rco 29), with an average of 0.825 and index diversity (DI) value varied from 0.745 (Rco 15) to 0.881 (Rco 29) with an average of 0.832. 100% of used SSR markers had PIC and DI values higher than 0.7 that means high polymorphism of chosen markers used for analysis. Probability of identity (PI) was low ranged from 0.002 (Rco 29 and Rco 41) to 0.018 (Rco 15) with an average of 0.007. -

Independent Review of the Forest Investment Plan of Tunisia Reviewer: Marjory-Anne Bromhead Date of review: (first draft review, 18th August 2016) PART I: Setting the context (from the reviewers overall understanding of the FIP document) Tunisia is the first country in North Africa and the Middle East to benefit from FIP support1, and provides an important example of a country where climate change mitigation and climate resilience go hand in hand. Tunisia is largely “forest poor”, with forests concentrated in the high rainfall areas in the north and North West of the country and covering only 5 percent of the territory (definitions vary). However rangelands are more widespread, covering 27 percent of the land area and are also a source of rural livelihoods and carbon sequestration, while both forests and rangelands are key to broader watershed management (Tunisia is water-scarce). Tunisia, together with the North Africa and Middle East region more broadly, is one of the regions most affected by climate change, with higher temperatures, more periods of extreme heat and more erratic rainfall. REDD actions will help to control erosion and conserve soil moisture and fertility, increasing climate resilience, while also reducing the country’s carbon footprint; the two benefits go hand in hand. -
