IN MEMORIAM Volume VI is dedicated to the memory of: MYRON D. KRETZINGER (1922-1985) Mr. Kretzinger was born in Canton, Ohio and had resided in the Massillon area for the past 40 years. He was a self-employed painter and decorator and was previously employed by the Stark County Building and Grounds Department. He was Vice President of the Stark County Chapter, Ohio Genealogical Society in 1984 and was responsible for the programs that year. He was an active genea- logist and attended meetings as long as his health permitted. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS It is impossible to include the names of all of the people who have helped with the preparation of this book. Those who read the tombstones in each cem- etery are listed at the end of the cemetery. We are indebted to Esther Sukosd of East Canton, Ohio for translating European language tombstones from St Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Massillon. This permitted us to include these names in the Index. Special recognition is given to the three typists: Helen S Mattson, Hazel Murphy and Dorothy Wig. The Stark County Historical Society provided the materials for the covers and the map. PREFACE 111 Stark County, Ohio was formed in 1809 from Columbiana County. It subsequently lost Brown, Harrison and Rose Townships to Carroll County in 1833 and Green and Franklin Townships to Summit County in 1840. It contains seventeen townships today. Its cemeteries date from 1805 when the first settlers came. There are 200 cemeteries today. This volume covers the central Township of Perry and includes all the cemeteries in the City of Massillon. There are twelve cemeteries in this volume. Much use has been mades of the previous cemetery book entitled Cemetery Rec- ords, Stark County, Ohio . It was researched by E. T. Heald, H. T. 0. Blue anmd H. D. Paxton. It was compiled, edited, and indexed with a foreward by Dorothy Sommer, Head, Reference Division, Canton Public Library Association. The project was sponsored by the Stark County Historical Society. It consist- ed of four volumes, one of which was the index, and was typed in 1955. It covered 158 cemeteries from the earliest time until about 1900. Most of the inscriptions were copied in the 1940' s. Much credit must be given to the re- searchers because many of the tombstones which they copied are unreadable or nonexistent today. The map used by E. T. Heald to locate the cemeteries in the 1940' s was made available by the late Eva Sparrowgrove of The Stark Coun- ty Historical Society. In this volume the cemetery numbers assigned by Heald have continued to be used. The description of the locations of the cemeteries in Stark County were submitted by Marilyn Oyster and Evelyn Jessup to The Ohio Genealogical Society for inclusion in their 1978 book entitled Ohio Cemeteries , which lists the location of every cemetery in the State of Ohio. The same descrip- tions are used in this volume. An attempt has been made to read the tombstones in rows so that a person can locate a particular stone from the description. This has not always been possible because of the haphazard manner in which some cemeteries are laid out. All stones have been included to the present day. Stones illegible or missing, but listed in Cemetery Records, Stark County, Ohio , referenced above, have been included and are so indicated. The project continues to its conclusion. All the cemetery inscriptions in Stark County have now been read. The typing and indexing of the inscriptions in West Lawn Cemetery in Canton remains to be done. This one very large ceme- tery will comprise all of Volume VII and its completion is anticipated in the Spring of 1986. ^^ TABLE OF CONTENTS FOREWARD, IN MEMORIAM, ACKNOWLEDGMENTS 11 PREFACE 111 MAP OF STARK COUNTY V PERRY TOWNSHIP 1. Annual Report 2018–19 3 Introduction 5 Metropolitan Opera Board of Directors 6 Season Repertory and Events 14 Artist Roster 16 The Financial Results 20 Our Patrons On the cover: Yannick Nézet-Séguin takes a bow after his first official performance as Jeanette Lerman-Neubauer Music Director PHOTO: JONATHAN TICHLER / MET OPERA 2 Introduction The 2018–19 season was a historic one for the Metropolitan Opera. Not only did the company present more than 200 exiting performances, but we also welcomed Yannick Nézet-Séguin as the Met’s new Jeanette Lerman- Neubauer Music Director. Maestro Nézet-Séguin is only the third conductor to hold the title of Music Director since the company’s founding in 1883. I am also happy to report that the 2018–19 season marked the fifth year running in which the company’s finances were balanced or very nearly so, as we recorded a very small deficit of less than 1% of expenses. The season opened with the premiere of a new staging of Saint-Saëns’s epic Samson et Dalila and also included three other new productions, as well as three exhilarating full cycles of Wagner’s Ring and a full slate of 18 revivals. The Live in HD series of cinema transmissions brought opera to audiences around the world for the 13th season, with ten broadcasts reaching more than two million people. Combined earned revenue for the Met (box office, media, and presentations) totaled $121 million. As in past seasons, total paid attendance for the season in the opera house was 75%. The new productions in the 2018–19 season were the work of three distinguished directors, two having had previous successes at the Met and one making his company debut.

  • Jacques Vergès, the Devil's Advocate
Jacques Vergès, Devil’s Advocate A Psychohistory of Vergès’ Judicial Strategy Faculty of Law, McGill University, Montreal April 2012 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Civil Law © Jonathan Widell, 2012 Abstract This study undertakes a psychohistory of French criminal defence lawyer Jacques Vergès’ judicial strategy. .His initial articulation of his judicial strategy in his book De la stratégie judiciaire in 1968 continues to inform his legal career, in which he has defended a number of controversial clients, most notably that of Gestapo officer Klaus Barbie in the 1987 trial. Vergès distinguished two types of judicial strategy in his 1968 book: rupture and connivence. Both strategies should be understood out of Vergès’ Marxist influences. This study looks into the coherence of his career in light of his initial articulation of judicial strategy and explores the shift in emphasis of his strategy from the defence of a cause to that of a person. The study adopts a three-level approach. It considers, first, Vergès’ discourse of his strategy, second, the world politics that shaped his discourse, and third, Vergès’ biography. First, Vergès’ strategy grew out of the duality of rupture and connivence and transformed into what we call devil’s advocacy, in which Vergès pits an accused (as an individual) against the justice system. Devil’s advocacy culminated in his defence of Barbie. After his defence of Barbie, Vergès pitted himself against the justice system so that his own notoriety was reflected to his clients rather than the other way around.

Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. O say does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave? ALMA MATER ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY Where the bold saguaros Raise their arms on high, Praying strength for brave tomorrows From the western sky; Where eternal mountains Kneel at sunset’s gate, Here we hail thee, Alma Mater, Arizona State. —Hopkins-Dresskell MAROON AND GOLD Fight, Devils down the field Fight with your might and don’t ever yield Long may our colors outshine all others Echo from the buttes, Give em’ hell Devils! Cheer, cheer for A-S-U! Fight for the old Maroon For it’s Hail! Hail! The gang’s all here And it’s onward to victory! Students whose names appear in this program have completed degree requirements.
