The thesis makes two contributions. First, I argue that there is much to be gained by further engaging with the archival turn within historical studies. Second, my reading of feminist objects in archives disrupts descriptions of feminist history that emerge in feminist studies. The objects and their archives disrupt, as they fail to neatly illustrate familiar feminist narratives of the past and offer a set of complex concerns and relationships that defy the conventional linear periodisation of feminist thought. Therefore, analyzing movie that is part of a literary work is very interesting. The subject of this research is Silent Hill, a horror film series adapted from the video game. However, this research only takes the data from the first sequel of this movie, because the available data are appropriate with the objectives of this research. Silent Hill 1 tells about a mother who struggles to find a solution in a mysterious town due to irregularities in her adopted daughter who often sleepwalks and calls Silent Hill town. The purpose of this research is to find out how women are depicted in the movie, and why they are shown as the dominant characters. This research uses an objective approach by applying liberal feminism theory, representation theory of Stuart Hall, and supported by film theory. Liberal feminism emphasis on individual autonomy and equality of opportunity. This research focuses on the concept of equality measured by Merle Thornton. While representation theory is used to help in interpreting the portrayal of woman characters that are portrayed dominantly. After analyzing all the data that have been found, beginning from the source of the conflict, the efforts, and the achievements of woman characters that become the focus of this research, they are Rose, Officer Cybil Bennett, and Christabella, the writer concludes that women in this horror movie are described as the figures that can be equal like men.

    CHAPTER 2 RECREATING THE CIRCLE: RECONSTRUCTING INDIGENOUS WOMANHOOD We can talk about self-government, sovereignty, cultural recovery and the heal- ing path, but we will never achieve any of these things until we take a serious look at the disrespect that characterizes the lives of so many Native women. Kim Anderson, A Recognition of Being: Reconstructing Native Womanhood (14) Closely connected to the ways in which Indigenous feminism is presented in Paula Gunn Allen’s The Sacred Hoop, Lee Maracle’s I Am Woman, and Jackie Huggins’ Sister Girl is the recurring theme of how Indigenous women themselves are de- picted in these texts. This theme unfolds on two levels. There is the personal level, where Allen, Maracle and Huggins present their individual experiences of what it means to be an Indigenous woman in North America and Australia in the second half of the twentieth century. Then, on a larger scale, all three writers also examine the mechanisms of representing Indigenous womanhood, motherhood, and sisterhood that were developed and maintained by the mainstream American, Canadian and Australian settler cultures. In addition, they draw attention to the roles that mothers, grandmothers, sisters, aunts and female ancestors in general play in extended families, tribal communities and kinship structures as well as in reconstructing a positive and functioning sense of femininity. As was suggested in the previous chapter, womanhood and motherhood become an important site of difference for Indigenous women. The governing principles of Indigenous wom- en’s personal non-fiction and life writing in general include, on the one hand, grief over the loss of tribal powers, forcibly separated children, and the denial of motherhood, all resulting in the break-up of traditional family and tribal struc- tures, and on the other hand, the affirmation of female nurturing, maternity and sexuality, including the celebration of female ancestors.

    Oral Presentation Abstracts OP001 Rights, Interests and Moral Standing: a critical examination of dialogue between Regan and Frey. Rebekah Humphreys Cardiff University, Cardiff, United Kingdom This paper aims to assess R. G. Frey’s analysis of Leonard Nelson’s argument (that links interests to rights). Frey argues that claims that animals have rights or interests have not been established. Frey’s contentions that animals have not been shown to have rights nor interests will be discussed in turn, but the main focus will be on Frey’s claim that animals have not been shown to have interests. One way Frey analyses this latter claim is by considering H. J. McCloskey’s denial of the claim and Tom Regan’s criticism of this denial. While Frey’s position on animal interests does not depend on McCloskey’s views, he believes that a consideration of McCloskey’s views will reveal that Nelson’s argument (linking interests to rights) has not been established as sound. My discussion (of Frey’s scrutiny of Nelson’s argument) will centre only on the dialogue between Regan and Frey in respect of McCloskey’s argument.     CEDAW Opening Statement Madam Chair, distinguished members of the Committee. Before I begin I would like to acknowledge the traditional owners on whose land we meet today and pay my respects to elders past and present. It is a great pleasure to meet with you today, to engage in a constructive dialogue about Australia’s implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women. Being here, I am humbled by the great Australian women who have come before me, trailblazers like feminist and activist, Jessie Street. 90 years ago Jessie Street came to this very building to advocate for Australian women’s economic independence as a key to their advancement: the right for women to divorce, women’s fair custody of their children, birth control for women, equal pay for women and equal inclusion of Aboriginal women in Australian society. She understood the power of working with women throughout the world. Among her many accomplishments, Jessie Street championed the creation of the Commission on the Status of Women as a permanent United Nations body to deal with women’s rights. We’re proud she did. Australia has continued its meaningful engagement in international fora. Its activities range from Equal Employment Opportunity practices in the public service to 'cultural' production in such forms as academic literature and documentary film-making. For most immigrant women of non-English speaking background, the cultural arena of feminism is foreign, in many more ways than one. Feminism represents, to speak perhaps too stereo typically, a middle class 'Anglo' culture, far removed from everyday experience. And this despite well-meaning concern on the part of many feminists for those groups suffering compound oppressions of class and ethnicity, as well as gender. Symbolically, an almost cult concern is shown for the plight of the migrant woman outworker, and with considerable real justification. Yet this concern is from a singular cultural perspective: middle class libertarian liberalism, quite alien to the immediate needs and aspirations of its subjects.
