Denoel, Paris, 2000 The fate and creative evolution of the outstanding representative of Ecole de Paris, Heinrich Epstein, is a kind of metaphor for the rapid development of the artistic life of Paris in the 1920s and 1930s, tragically interrupted by the Second World War. Born into an educated Jewish family in Lodz in 1891, Chaim Epstein, despite the early loss of his father, was still able to receive an excellent education. Lodz, the then "textile capital" of the Russian Empire, was the most "emancipated" Jewish city and attracted many Jews from all over the country. It was there that the native of Minsk, Jakub Kacenbogen, opened his art school, where young Epstein ended up. By the way, at the Katzenbogen school, Epstein meets the still very young Zygmunt Landau, later a brilliant painter, with whom the artist will have a friendship in the future. Early showing his talent as an artist, Epstein decides to continue his education abroad, going to Munich in 1910, where he spent two years. In Munich, Epstein was impressed by the work of contemporary German painters such as Franz Marc, August Robert Ludwig Macke and especially Marianne von Werefkin. He is attracted to art by the 1 / 3 anticSwiss 03/10/2021 12:24:25 http://www.anticswiss.com representatives of this creative association, which was named Der Blaue Reiter, a new vision of form, drama combined with clarity and laconic color scheme. It is these qualities that will later be characteristic of Epstein's graphics. Full of new bright creative impressions, Epstein left the Bavarian capital and moved in 1913 to Paris, the real capital of the arts. He settles in the legendary la Ruche, the "city of artists" in the Saint-Lambert quarter in the 15th arrondissement of the French capital. In Paris, Epstein finds himself surrounded by his creative associates - Amedeo Modigliani, Michel Kikoine, Chaïm Soutine et Pinchus Krémègne. Beginning in the 1920s, the artist began to actively participate in exhibition life - first, in 1921 at the Autumn Salon, and later at the Salon of the Independent (in 1921, 1922, 1923, 1925 and 1928). In 1927, the artist marries Suzanne Dorignac, daughter of the painter Georges Dorignac. Remarkably, Suzanne's own sister, Céline Dorignac, was married to another painter, André Hébuterne, brother of the legendary Jeanne Hébuterne, the muse and earthly companion of Amedeo Modigliani. The 1930s have been the happiest period in the artist's life. He exhibits a lot, travels a lot. The artist's frequent trips to the sea, to Brittany, enriched the subjects of his works. Seas and the life of fishermen become an integral part of his works. He finally buys a house in Épernon, where he moves with his family. But the beginning of the Second World War became tragic for the artist. The artistic life of France becomes paralyzed. Perhaps as a result of denunciation, Epstein is arrested by the Gestapo and in 1944 he was sent to Auschwitz, from where the artist never returned. Epstein's artistic pictorial language becomes a kind of continuation of the aesthetics of late Fauvism, enriched by the expressionism of Soutine and Cocoin. Meanwhile, speaking about the artist's graphics, it is impossible not to note his "stylistic coservatism", an emphasized desire to work with clearer color planes, more characteristic, as noted above, for Der Blaue Reiter. The watercolor Port is a characteristic and striking example of Epstein's graphics, stylistically close to his works of the 1930s. The drawing before entering the gallery was in a private collection in France.     The Yiddish Life of Chaim Soutine (1893-1943): New Materials ​ Introduction and translations by Ofer Dynes ​ In geveb: A Journal of Yiddish Studies (April 2020) ​ For the online version of this article: [http://ingeveb.org/texts-and-translations/life-of-soutine] In geveb: A Journal of Yiddish Studies April (2020) The Yiddish Life of Chaim Soutine (1893-1943): ​ New Materials Ofer Dynes Most biographies of Chaim Soutine comment at some point on how impossible it is to write a biography of Chaim Soutine: “What sources do we have for writing about Soutine?” mused Michel LeBrun-Franzaroli ruefully, after decades of meticulous research following the footsteps of Soutine across France: “Leopold Zborowski, his art dealer… didn’t leave any archive, any financial account, any catalogue… Soutine himself hardly spoke, practically never wrote, and at any rate, didn’t say anything about his art.” The preface to the biographical note in Soutine’s Catalogue Raisonné conveys the same ​ sense of frustration, albeit much more succinctly: “The artist left few personal papers and 1 ​ no records.” The few letters of Soutine that have survived are prosaic in their content and laconic in their style. In 1964, Harvard University was able to purchase one of the most extensive collections of Soutine’s correspondence. The hopes were high: the collection contained 37 letters of Soutine, no less, addressed to Henri Sérouya (born Aharon Tsruya, 1895-1968), a renowned Kabbalah scholar who had claimed that Soutine’s paintings are troubling because they “are permeated with the vehemence of Jewish 2 mysticism.” One cannot help wondering: Did Soutine agree with this statement? What kind of conversations did he and Sérouya hold on the subjects of Jewish Mysticism or French Modernism, considering that Sérouya was an expert on both? Disappointingly, the letters do not provide any clues.

Michel (Mikhaпl) Kikoпne (1892-1968) is one of the artists of the School of Paris, the school, represented by the great number of names of Jewish emigration from Russia. The creative manner of Kikoпne formed in Paris under the influence of P. Cezanne’s and P. Bonnard’s painting. Kikoпne is most often mentioned (in the past and actually) as one of the famous Parisian trio of artists issued from Vilna school of drawing and painting of I. P. Trutnev: Ch. Soutine, P. Krйmиgne, M. Kikoпne. Krйmиgne and Kikoпne for many years rested in the shadow of the creativity of Soutine, and only in the last decade, the interest to them, referred to the second row of the famous representatives of the School of Paris, has increased significantly. Early biographies of all members of this trio reveal a great deal of similarities and notable parallels. In reference biographical articles of European publications they often called “Litvak”, call them the “French painters of the Lithuanian origin” (more correctly, “Litvak-born French painters”). “Litvak”, as it is well known, is the name of a territorial and linguistic subgroup of Ashkenazi Jews widespread on the territory of the provinces of the Russian Empire, actually parts of modern Lithuania, Latvia and Belarus. The information about the birth of M. Kikoпne in various publications is quite confused and contains a lot of contradictions.

    South of France beach scene Lucien Adrion REF: 2056 Height: 43.5 cm (17.1") Width: 56 cm (22") Sold Adrion left his native town of Strasbourg in 1907 and moved to Paris to work as a draftsman to the fashion industry. He travelled to London, Munich and Frankfurt. When he visited Germany the outbreak of the First World War meant he was demobilised in Berlin. Here Adrion studied at the studio of Hermann Struck (1876- 1944), a well-known artist in etchings and engravings who was also the master of artists such as Marc Chagall (1887-1985) and Lesser Ury (1861-1931). Adrion remained in Berlin until after the end of the First World War, and returned to Strasbourg in 1919. His signed lithographs were a success and monetarily fuelled his travels back to Paris. Georges Chéron an art dealer who also represented artists like Amadeo Modigliani and Foujita, staged a One-man Show of Adrion's work in February 1921 and represented him henceforth. In the neighbourhood of Montparnasse, Adrion associated with young Eastern European painters such as Chaime Soutine (1893-1943), Pinchus Krémegne (1890-1981) and Michel Kikoine (1892-1968) who were to comprise the École de Paris Group. The artist was greatly appreciated for his crowded street scenes around Paris. For example, the critic Galtier-Boissiére, (1891-1966) wrote, "Il a le sens du mouvement des foules, du mouvement de la vie." (He has a feeling for the movement of crowds, the movement of life.) There is a distinct shift in Adrion's later style, when bored with his life in Paris he left his agent Chéron for Normandy and focused on painting landscapes.

He was born in Strasbourg in 1889 and his first employment was in that city where he worked as a technical draughtsman. He left there in 1907, going to Paris and securing a job drawing fashion plates but remained only briefly in that position, having made the decision to concentrate on becoming a painter. He took up an itinerant lifestyle, travelling from place to place and producing drawings, studies and sketches of the places that he stayed. London and the south of England, Frankfurt and Munich were all visited but he was caught up in the latter by the outbreak of the Great War and had to leave Germany. When the war was over, he returned to Berlin to study engraving under Chagall’s former teacher, Hermann Struck. In 1919, he went back to Strasbourg, remaining there briefly to work on a series of small lithographs, the sale of which enabled him to raise sufficient funds go to Paris where he staged his first one-man show of oil paintings at La Galérie Chéron in 1921. He had found a studio in Montparnasse and became part of a circle of young Eastern European artists which included Pinchus Krémegne, Chaim Soutine and Michel Kikoine who were part of the non-French section of l’École de Paris.
