Genre Fiction Classification: A Continuation Study of its Reception by Patrons in the Durham County (NC) Public Library. A Master’s Paper for the M.S. in L.S degree. April, 2006. 33 pages. Advisor: Evelyn Daniel. Browsing has been shown to be the main way that most public library patrons locate new reading materials. A genre fiction classification scheme can to aid readers in their search for materials as well as preventing them from feeling overwhelmed when dealing with the entire fiction collection at once. This study investigates attitudes toward genre fiction classification by public library patrons in the Main Branch of the Durham County Public Library system in North Carolina. The survey was conducted, along with a comparison of circulation statistics, to determine the success of genre fiction classification several years after implementation. Respondents generally indicated satisfaction with the system. Fiction circulation continued to increase steadily. • Surrogate Scriptures: American Christian Bestsellers and the Bible, 1850-1900
Surrogate Scriptures: American Christian Bestsellers and the Bible, 1850-1900 DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By John Thomas Acker Graduate Program in English The Ohio State University 2017 Dissertation Committee: Dr. Jared Gardner, Advisor Dr. Elizabeth Hewitt Dr. Hannibal Hamlin Copyrighted by John Thomas Acker 2017 Abstract This dissertation examines four bestselling Christian novels published in the United States between 1850 and 1900: Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852) by Harriet Beecher Stowe, The Gates Ajar (1868) by Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, Ben-Hur (1880) by Lew Wallace, and In His Steps (1896) by Charles Sheldon. These four books reached millions of readers in a time when many Christians refused to read novels at all, helping to launch what is today a $4B Christian merchandise industry. More importantly, amid what Nathan Hatch has called the “democratization of American Christianity,” popular Christian novels offered a measure of cultural unity, despite splintering churches and increasing skepticism. To explain these novels’ literary popularity and religious impact, I approach them as what I call “surrogate Scriptures.” Just as surrogates are both representatives and substitutes, in a sense these novels can both replace the Bible and point readers back to it. All four novels confirm the Bible’s centrality and authority in Christian theology and practice, but they also showcase changing attitudes toward reading, understanding, interpreting, and applying Biblical content. The four novelists I study here stake out very ii different positions on these issues, but they all contribute to a vibrant and fascinating Christian literary culture.

  • Typological Realism in Contemporary Evangelical Fiction: Tragedy, Eternity, and the Shack Kenneth Paradis Wilfrid Laurier University
Typological Realism in Contemporary Evangelical Fiction: Tragedy, Eternity, and The Shack Kenneth Paradis Wilfrid Laurier University The modern author who writes a novel based typologically on themes from the Bible … is literally incapacitated by history and his own consciousness from writing out of the faith that was accessible even to the most sophisticated medieval authors. (Conversely,… any modern work that used typology seriously and naively would remain, almost by definition, sub-literary, like most Sunday-school readers.) Theodor Ziolkowsky Every human society requires a “theodicy,” an interpretation of the suffering and injustice endemic to the human condition. It is the absence of secular society to provide such, after the retreat of Enlightenment thought, the facile substitutions of consumerist hedonism, and the machinery of the secular therapeutic, that opens the door for a return to the evangelical theodicies. Peter Berger illiam paul young’s homiletic novel The Shack is an originally Wself-published text that, as of September 2010, had over ten million copies in print and had been at number one on the New York Times bestseller list for seventy weeks.1 The Shack’s story of self-help and healing through an experiential encounter with Christian doctrine instantiates a mode 1 www.windblownmedia.com, 15 October 2010.
