Students of the Month During the 17th century the Baroque guitar very similar to the modern guitar came to light. Nylon strings were not yet created and animal guts were still used for the strings and fret boards. The frets were soon replaced with metal during the Classical Music era. Antonio de Torres created the Spanish guitar in 1859, which is still played today. The body was flat on both sides and larger than others. He also added more fret boards and had six strings. In the 19th century, Christian Fredrich Martin, changed the bracing system making it an x shape. He also changed the nylon strings to steel. The result was a better supported and more stable, acoustic guitar. Less than 20 years later two men worked on making the sound louder; they did this by taking two horseshoe magnets, connecting them together, and placing them around the strings with a coil underneath.
