This subspecies is found in southern Polynesia, eastern Melanesia, and Micronesia. Three additional subspecies of E. semicaudata (E.s. rotensis, E.s. palauensis, and E.s. sulcata) are not discussed here unless they are used to support assumptions about E.s. semicaudata, or to fill in data gaps in this analysis. The Pacific sheath-tailed bat is an Old-World bat in the family Emballonuridae, and is found in parts of Polynesia, eastern Melanesia, and Micronesia. It is the only insectivorous bat recorded from much of this area.

EMBALLONURIDAE DEFINITION AND GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Emballonuridae comprises small to moderately large microchiropteran bats with a forearm ranging in length from about 35–95 mm. Members of this family are recognised by the following characteristics: typical chiropteran teeth; incomplete premaxillae which are represented by nasal branches only and are never fused with each other or with the maxillae; well-developed postorbital process; auditory bullae that are usually emarginate on the inner edge; the palate terminates in the plane of the last molars or, if produced behind this plane, narrows abruptly; the humerus with the trochiter is well developed but not as large as the trochin and not articulating with the scapula; neither tubercle of the humerus rises above the head of the humerus; the epitrochlea is not especially developed but does have a distinct spinous process, especially in Taphozous and Diclidurus; the second finger lacks bony phalanges; the third finger has two bony phalanges, the first of these is reflexed above the wing when at rest; the tail perforates the interfemoral membrane and appears on its upper surface distinctly back from the edge; the muzzle is without special cutaneous outgrowths (Miller 1907; Koopman & Cockrum 1967). HISTORY OF DISCOVERY The history of the taxon Emballonuridae was unravelled by Miller (1907). The family was first recognised as a distinct group by Gervais in 1855. At that time it was considered as a tribe of Vespertilionidae under the name Emballonurina. Most of the genera included in the Emballonuridae by Miller (1907) are still recognised today.

ABLV is of significant public health concern because infection causes an acute, fatal, neurological disease in humans. The causative agent of ABLV is a virus: family Rhabdoviridae, genus Lyssavirus genotype 7 (van Regenmortel et al. 2000). Other lyssavirus genotypes (2, 4, 5 and 6) solely or mainly affect bats; classical rabies is genotype 1. There are two known sub lineages of ABLV, the yellow-bellied sheath-tailed bat variant and pteropid variant (Hooper et al. 1997; Gould et al. 2002; Barrett 2004). ABLV infections have been detected in all four of the mainland species of flying-fox in Australia: • Pteropus alecto (black flying-fox) • P. scapulatus (little red flying-fox) • P. poliocephalus (grey-headed flying-fox) • P. conspicillatus (spectacled flying-fox). ABLV infection has also been confirmed in one species of insectivorous microbat, the yellow-bellied sheath- tailed bat (Saccolaimus flaviventris). Additionally, seroconversion has been identified in a total of seven genera within five of the seven families of Australian microbats: Chaerephon and Austronomus (family Molossidae), Chalinolobus, Vespadelus, Falsistrellus and Nyctophilus (family Vespertilionidae), Hipposideros (family Hipposideridae), Macroderma (family Megadermatidae) and Saccolaimus (family Emballonuridae) (Field 2005; Prada et al. 2019). It should be assumed that all bat species are potential hosts of ABLV and all bats, regardless of their clinical state, should be handled as if potentially infected with ABLV.

The new locality extends the distribution of this species by 663 km south from its previously southernmost known record in Bolivia and 812 km to the southwest from its nearest occurrence in Paraguay. Although the new record is from within the Yungas ecoregion, the specimen was found in an urban area. The presence of Emballonuridae in Argentina was thought to be highly probable; the lack of records could be due to the methods used for capturing bats in Argentina, which are not very effective for the species of this family.
