Pathways may have different forms, depicting either a straight way or a winding one, but they have the same function, that is to trace a route from a starting point to a goal. So does the research work, and we believe that the contributions of the schol- ars hosted in this volume could really enrich the field of Chinese and Japanese Studies through the pathways they chose to trace with their research studies. This volume collects articles by eight contributors interested in different re- search areas within the field of East Asian Studies. The articles, which are orga- nized in a Japanese section and a Chinese section, use different approaches across disciplines belonging to humanities in order to explore topics ranging from clas- sical and contemporary East Asian literature to contact linguistics, sociology and anthropology. The Japanese section contains four essays dealing with modern and con- temporary literature and cinema. The opening contribution by Giacomo Cal- orio concerns contemporary Japanese cinema starting from a statement of the Japanese film scholar Yomota Inuhiko, which isWhat is Japanese Cinema?. In his article, Calorio discusses about ideas of contemporaneity and national cinema in the contemporary Japanese film production. The second contribution, by Diego Cucinelli, analyses the literary motif known as kame naku, ‘crying turtle’, and traces its path through Japanese literature from its origin to the contemporary FUP Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing (DOI 10.36253/fup_best_practice) Diego Cucinelli, Andrea Scibetta (edited by), Tracing Pathways 雲路. In particular, by using kame naku as keyword Cucinelli analyzes the atti- tudes and sensations of modern and contemporary poets and novelists toward the motif. The third contribution is by Marta Fanasca, who deals withyuri manga, i.e. manga focused on the representation of sentimental relations between girls. In particular, Fanasca analyzes the manga re-elaboration of Yoshiya Nobuko’s Hana monogatari (1916), a collection of short stories on “passionate friendships” between students, or a student and a young teacher. The forth contribution, by Tsuboi Hideto, deals with tenkō bungaku, the «literature of conversion»: fo- cusing on some writings by Kobayashi Morito, in his paper Tsuboi analyzes the stories of conversion experiences of various converted people (tenkōsha), reexamining how they accepted conversion, and at the same time focuses on the contradictions and conflicts that occurred there. The contributions included in the Chinese section concern two main mac- ro-topics: on the one side, they bring into light issues related to cultural con- tacts between Italy and

  • Religion in China BKGA 85 Religion Inchina and Bernhard Scheid Edited by Max Deeg Major Concepts and Minority Positions MAX DEEG, BERNHARD SCHEID (EDS.)
Religions of foreign origin have shaped Chinese cultural history much stronger than generally assumed and continue to have impact on Chinese society in varying regional degrees. The essays collected in the present volume put a special emphasis on these “foreign” and less familiar aspects of Chinese religion. Apart from an introductory article on Daoism (the BKGA 85 BKGA Religion in China prototypical autochthonous religion of China), the volume reflects China’s encounter with religions of the so-called Western Regions, starting from the adoption of Indian Buddhism to early settlements of religious minorities from the Near East (Islam, Christianity, and Judaism) and the early modern debates between Confucians and Christian missionaries. Contemporary Major Concepts and religious minorities, their specific social problems, and their regional diversities are discussed in the cases of Abrahamitic traditions in China. The volume therefore contributes to our understanding of most recent and Minority Positions potentially violent religio-political phenomena such as, for instance, Islamist movements in the People’s Republic of China. Religion in China Religion ∙ Max DEEG is Professor of Buddhist Studies at the University of Cardiff. His research interests include in particular Buddhist narratives and their roles for the construction of identity in premodern Buddhist communities. Bernhard SCHEID is a senior research fellow at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. His research focuses on the history of Japanese religions and the interaction of Buddhism with local religions, in particular with Japanese Shintō. Max Deeg, Bernhard Scheid (eds.) • Thesis Takes the Milan Riot As a Starting Point for Exploring Contemporary Social Tensions Between the Italians and Chinese
! "! ABSTRACT On April 13, 2007, Italy experienced a major ethnic riot by hundreds of Chinese residents in Milan. The riot was triggered by a parking ticket, which incited allegations of racial discrimination towards the Chinese and unfair treatment by the Italian police. The Chinese government even expressed concern for its Chinese cousins in Italy. It protested the alleged discrimination and demanded an investigation. This thesis takes the Milan riot as a starting point for exploring contemporary social tensions between the Italians and Chinese. It analyzes the Chinese immigration experience, focusing not only on how and why they came to Italy, but also the reasons for their astonishing economic success. I utilize Italian, Chinese, and American media accounts and incorporate personal interviews and migration theory to demonstrate how the historical relationship between Italians and Chinese in Italy has evolved in concert with changes in Italian immigration law, debates surrounding Italian national identity and the role of immigrants in an increasingly multiethnic Italy. Based on my research, I argue that social tensions between the Italians and Chinese do not stem from racism as the media suggests, but rather from economic competition and the inability of the Italian state to regulate immigration and work. While the media tends to portray a picture of unresolvable conflict between the Italians and Chinese, this work reveals that the second-generation ! #! Chinese are, in fact, assimilating and integrating successfully into Italian culture. Although largely ignored in scholarship and the media, they are actually bringing the two communities closer together. Born and raised in Italy, the second- generation Chinese are in many ways, culturally more Italian than Chinese.

  • Chinese Migration(S) to Italy Beyond Stereotypes and Simplistic Views: the Case of the Graphic Novels Primavere E Autunni and Chinamen Andrea Scibetta
Chinese migration(s) to Italy beyond stereotypes and simplistic views: the case of the graphic novels Primavere e Autunni and Chinamen Andrea Scibetta Abstract: The current contribution aims at describing some key-aspects of Rocchi and Demonte’s graphic novels Primavere e Autunni (2015) and Chinamen (2017), especially in relation to: 1) the historical reconstruction of Chinese migration to Italy; 2) the challenge of widespreading negative stereotypes against Chinese migrants, which still characterize dominant public discourse in the Italian society. The first paragraph will highlight theoretical aspects of both works, in particular relation to the literature on migration and of migration, with Sinoitalian literature, as well as with macro- and micro-aspects of Chinese migration to Italy. After that, some common points of both works will be underlined, including struc- ture and style, semiotic aspects, communicative functions and multimodality. The third paragraph will specifically focus on a series of key-figures described in the graphic novels, which contribute to draw the attention to specific aspects regarding Chinese historical presence in Milan and in Italy. Keywords: Chinese migration, graphic novel, literature on/of migrations, challenge to stereotypes, multimodality. 1. • The Role of Self and Identity in Motivating Learners of Mandarin Chinese As a Foreign Language in Ireland
The role of self and identity in motivating learners of Mandarin Chinese as a foreign language in Ireland Ph.D. Thesis Chung Kam Kwok University of Dublin, Trinity College School of Linguistic, Speech and Communication Sciences 2017 Declaration_____________________________ I declare that this thesis has not been submitted as an exercise for a degree at this or any other University, and that it is entirely my own work. ___________________ Chung Kam Kwok October 2017 Permission to lend and/or copy ______________ I agree to deposit this thesis in the University’s open access institutional repository or allow the Library to do so on my behalf, subject to Irish Copyright Legislation and Trinity College Library conditions of use and acknowledgement. Chung Kam Kwok October 2017 Summary This thesis investigates the role of self and identity in the Chinese language learning motivation. It proposes an approach where equal weight is given to social context and psychological factors in the inquiry of the relation between self-identity and motivation. In particular, SLA researchers either focus on the cognitive aspects of motivation, which often see self-identity and motivation are relatively stable variables, or accentuated the process in which language learners deploy their agency to negotiate with their learning environment. While these two approaches to motivation are very different, these researchers are both interested in how learners’ perception of themselves is related to second/foreign language learning. Recently, some researchers in the field began to bring together some seemingly incompatible concepts in order to better understand the association between self- identity and motivation. Some other researchers also encourage socio-cultural oriented scholars to give more emphasis of psychological factors in their research, and vice versa.

The Roots and Mechanisms of Emmanuel Macron’s Success Michel Perottino 1,*, Petra Guasti 2 1 Department of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University, 112 00 Prague, Czech Republic; E-Mail: [email protected] 2 Institute of Sociology, Czech Academy of Sciences, 110 00 Prague, Czech Republic; E-Mail: [email protected] * Corresponding author Submitted: 30 June 2020 | Accepted: 1 October 2020 | Published: 17 December 2020 Abstract This article focuses on the roots and mechanisms of Macron’s success, arguing that in 2017 two conditions were essential in Macron’s rise—the implosion of the established system of the French Fifth Republic in which the two main parties were alternating in power; and the rise of anti-establishment populist challengers on the right and on the left (cf. Stockemer, 2017; Zulianello, 2020). It was anti-establishment appeal that put Macron on the map, but the appeal to technocratic competence that won him the presidency. Technocratic populism transcends the left–right cleavage and, as a result, has a broader appeal than its left- and right-wing counterparts. Emmanuel Macron was an insider taking on the (crumbling) sys- tem and positioning himself as an outsider—refusing the traditional labels, including centrism, elite recruitment patterns, and mediated politics. Instead, Macron and La Republique en Marche attempted to create new forms of responsiveness by ‘giving voice to the people,’ while relying on technocratic competence as a legitimation mechanism.

我是中国人: Identity and social integration of Chinese youth in the Marche region Meri Perna Abstract: This article analyzes the issues of identity and social integration of Chinese youth in the Marche region. The focus on these two themes arises from the recent increase in the number of Chinese students in schools in this region. This change points to a need to study an unexplored phenomenon. In this regard, the intention of this contribution is, on the one hand, to observe the dynamics related to social integration of these young people and to understand how they navigate their multiple identities, and, on the other hand, to provide guidance for future research as well as useful tools to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for them to live in. Following a review of the literature, this article analyzes research results regarding data collected from 198 young people and 21 teachers, and concludes with insights into the identity and social integration problems confronting Chinese youth in the region. Keywords: Chinese youth, Marche region, social integration, identity, migration. 1.
