Garréta, Supervisor, Chair ___________________________ Robyn Wiegman, Co-Chair ___________________________ Rey Chow ___________________________ Anne Allison An abstract of a dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate Program in Literature in the Graduate School of Duke University 2018 Copyright by Jui-an Chou 2018 Abstract “Between Boys: Fantasy of Male Homosexuality in Boys’ Love, Mary Renault, and Marguerite Yourcenar” examines an unexpected kinship between Boys’ Love, a Japanese male-on-male romance genre, and literary works by Mary Renault and Marguerite Yourcenar, two mid-twentieth century authors who wrote about male homosexuality. Following Eve Sedgwick, who proposed that a “rich tradition of cross- gender inventions of homosexuality” should be studied separately from gay and lesbian literature, this dissertation examines male homoerotic fictions authored by women. These fictions foreground a disjunction between authorial and textual identities in gender and sexuality, and they have often been accused of inauthenticity, appropriation, and exploitation.

    KANKAKEE HISTORY. (Courtesy Kankakee Area Chamber of Commerce) The land around Kankakee, located in the heart of the Kankakee River Valley, was considered a beautiful and fine place to live by the Pottawatomi Indians long before the ever increasing westward migration of the white settlers replaced them. For here was a rolling landscape with a beautiful river thickly bordered with groves of Oak, Hickory, Maple, Cedar and Black Walnut. With the land in places sloping gently to the water's edge and in others rising in sheer limestone bluffs many feet above the river,: and the abundant wildlife that inhabited the area, no more beautiful or varied scenery could be found, in the Middle West than in the Valley of the Kankakee and its tributaries. It is little wonder that the Indians call it, "Ti - yar - ac - ke," meaning wonderful land- wonderful home; or, that they established many villages within what are now called The Greater Kankakee Area. There were three main villages; "Inne - Maung" or Chief Yellow Head's Village in the eastern end of the county, "She - mor - gard," or Soldiers Village; and the principal settlement "Shaw- waw - nas -see," or Little Rock Village, located near the mouth of Rock Creek. All of this bountiful land and its many natural resources was ceded to the Federal Government at the treaty of Camp Tippecanoe in 1832. As soon as the news of the transfer of this desirable land reached New York, Vermont and other eastern states, young men and their families flocked to the area and established homes. As early as l834, numbers of settlers came and located on or near the river from Momence to Wilmington.

Never would I ask this of you if I were not certain that it was necessary. Please know that your feelings of sorrow, frustration and anguish are normal and completely understandable. As Catholics we love our parishes and our parish churches, and we will grieve together as we endure the hard work of closing. This decision to close your parish was not made easily; rather it was made after a careful consideration of the entire Archdiocese and with much consultation with many people. Our intentions were to be fair to everyone; I am sorry for you and your parish that what has been such an important part of your lives can no longer continue. I know many parishioners are having difficulty seeing where this is all going to take us, but all must get ready to start rebuilding the church in Boston. We are ready to move forward with some serious thinking and some hard work that will enable us to rebuild from a solid foundation. We need to be morally solid, spiritually solid and financially solid in order to give life to our hopes and dreams for our faith community. We really do need to put more energy into our youth than into our heating bills, and more effort into reaching out to those who need us than to fixing buildings that are beyond repair.

It is clear that the Archdiocese, though facing many of the challenges of the economic shortfalls of recent years, is very much present and active in the 144 cities and towns we serve. Since its inception, the Church has been called to both respond to the needs of the present moment, through spiritual and pastoral ministries, and to build for the future through evangelization. As the Archdiocese prepares for the first phase of Disciples in Mission, the new Archdiocesan Pastoral Plan, this approach of providing for the current needs of the Catholic community today while establishing a strong foundation for growth will guide our efforts.
