Sunday 8:00 AM St. Leo’s influence had a rippling effect that spanned 9:30 AM countries, generations, and centuries. He faithfully preached against the heresies of Manichaeism, 11:00 AM Pelagianism, Priscillianism, and Nestorianism. He was generous in using the gifts God gave him in order to build 12:30 PM up the Church. He served tirelessly and selflessly. He served as pope for just over 20 years until he died in the year 461. It was so clear as I offered Mass that we were indeed surrounded by a “great cloud of witnesses,” as we are whenever we take time to pray (Heb 12:1). The principle which underlies both venerating relics and burying the dead is respect for their earthly remains. A relic is always treated with great respect, much as a gravesite would be. When ashes are scattered, they do not receive the same kind of respect, and may even be stepped on by people and animals, who are unaware of their presence. Ashes are generally scattered so that they can disappear and return to the elements, meaning that any physical reminder of the person is lost. Relics, on the other hand, serve as a visual reminder of the saint who has now passed on to glory. In this month of November, we pray in a special way for the dead. We remember those of our loved ones whom we have buried, and commend them to the merciful arms of our Heavenly Father.
