St. Lawrence Catholic Community believes we are called by our Baptism to gather as a worshipping and prayerful people. As responsible disciples, of Jesus Christ, we are called to be faithful stewards of our time, talents, and treasures. We value and foster Catholic education and evangelization. With open hearts and hands, we reach out to all brothers and sisters, as together we strive to offer hope, act justly, love tenderly and walk humbly with our God.

MARCH 2, 2014 8TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

This coming Wednesday, we begin the season of Lent, our annual 40 day retreat with the Lord as a community and as individuals. As you may remember, our Advent theme was “‘JOY’ (Jesus, Others, You)…putting God first in our lives.” Picking up on that theme of Joy, our Lenten theme is, “Journey to Joy: Feel the Hunger, Feed with Prayer, Move Forward in Faith.”

As human beings, we all know what it means to be hungry whether it is physical, spiritual, emotional or intellectual. These hungers can be powerful forces that demand to be fed. The world may encourage us to feed them through honors or power or money or pleasure. Our faith would tell us that these things, while not bad in themselves, will not bring the satisfaction that they promise. Instead, feed those hungers with prayer, with our relationship to Jesus Christ. Our God promises us he will give us all we need. Once our hungers are fed and molded by good healthy prayer, then it’s time to move, to move forward in faith. When we live by this three step process, we can rest assured that we are putting Christ first in our lives and that we will find the joy we long for.

Each week before Mass begins, the screen in Church will have reflections that help us enter into the spirit of the season of Lent.

Take home one of the small discs in the Gathering Space as a reminder. Carry it with you throughout the season as a challenge to be attentive to the Lord’s presence.

In the Gathering Space you will find two different reflection booklets: the Journey to Joy as well as the Little Black Book . Use them to guide your prayer this season.

As you choose your Lenten projects, both giving up something as well as doing something in a positive direction, keep in mind our parish wide penance of being on time (even arriving early!) for Mass and staying until the last note of the last hymn is complete.

Through our hungers, may we come to deepen our experience, our relationship with, and our awareness of Christ in our lives and the lives of those around us.

Acknowledging that everyone is precious to God, pray for the person who is the most difficult or distant to you each day. 8TH S UNDAY IN O RDINARY T IME MARCH 2, 2014
