NPS Form 10-900-a OMS Approval No. 1024-0018 (8-86) United States Department of the Interior National Park Service National Register of Historic Places RECEDED Continuation Sheet Waka_fifl JUL25BM Section number Page INTERAGENCY RESOURCES DIVISION NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION: NATIONAL PARK SERVICE The Perry Farm is located on the south side of the old Tarboro stage road, now known as Riley Hill Road (SR 2320), just east of its intersection with Edgemont Road (SR 2300). The farm is in rural southeast Wake County 'near the small piedmont North Carolina town of Wendell. The present ten-acre farm was originally a part of 496 acres purchased in 1835 by John Perry. That acreage was a part of the approximately 1,500 acres Perry acquired in the area between 1802 and 1840. In 1914 Guyon Perry, son of Feggins Perry a former slave on the Perry farm, purchased the house and fifty-three acres of the farm's original acreage. After his death in 1956, the acreage was divided among his surviving children. This ten- acre tract, inherited by his youngest daughter, contains eight contributing (C) resources and two non-contributing (NC) resources. The c. 1820 Perry House, centerpiece of t.he farm, is shaded by several large evergreen and deciduous trees;, including oaks and maples and a large old, partially hollow l^olly tree. The house is surrounded by a variety of evergreen land deciduous shrubs and a variety of bulbs, perennial and Annual flowers. There are also remnants of an extensive fruit orchard which once included pear, apple, peach and plum tree^s. Small grape arbors survive in the northwest corner of the I front yard near the road and in the southeast corner of the rear yard.

He played a vital role in negotiating the 1854 Treaty of Kanagawa, which established trade between the United States and Japan, and helped reform the United States Navy. The new changes he implemented, like schooling and officer ranks, are still used in modern America. Nevertheless, the memory of Commodore Matthew Perry has faded from the American public over the decades since his death. He is not taught in American schools, hardly written about, and barely remembered by the American people. The goal of this paper is to find out what has caused Matthew Perry to disappear from America's public memory.

    University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Archives and Special Collections Ferreira-Mendes Portuguese-American Archives American-Portuguese Genealogical and Historical Society, Inc., records, 1981-1999 MC 83/PAA Extent: 21 linear feet (10 manuscript boxes, 97 card file boxes, 4 oversized boxes and 5 microfilm boxes) Historical note: The idea for a genealogical society specializing in researching family and vital records pertinent to Portuguese Americans began in 1977 when several individuals doing the same research met informally to discuss the idea. The five founders, Pat Amaral, Anthony Catojo, Jr., Estella Margarido, Henrietta Mayer and Cecelia Rose began their efforts by reviewing entries in the 1860 census. The group was formally incorporated in 1981. To standardize the information they were collecting, they asked Bruce Barnes, a librarian at UMD (then SMU) to create cataloguing guidelines. The members eventually compiled information on individuals and family names on over 65,000 index cards. The Taunton Public Library served as home to the card file collection, books and vertical file until 2009, when it was transferred to the FMPAA at UMass Dartmouth. The society published a quarterly newsletter, The Bulletin Board, starting in 1981.
