SAMPARC Balgram, Bhaje was started in year 1990 with 7 orphan children at famous Bhaje Caves, near Lonavla by Shri. Amitkumar Banerjee and Mrs. Lata Pande. The balgram is set up in a natural picturesque environment. It is one of our best performing centers, which is dedicated towards all-round growth and development of children. SAMPARC provides best possible family environment and inculcates cultural and community values in children.

The centre has till today rehabilitated 57 children, out of which 21 girls have been married and 35 children are working. 2 children have completed Post graduation, 24 children are under graduation in various courses like BSC Nursing, Teacher training etc. Some children have also taken up vocational training and ITI training.

Till today 129 children have passed 10th standard and more than 80 % of the children are computer literate.

The centre received National Child Welfare Award by the President of . A highest award in child welfare by the Government of India.

SAMPARC Page 1 separated Children’s Home for Boys and Girls. All the boys from SAMPARC Balgram, Bhaje have been shifted to SAMPARC balgram Shel-Pimpalgaon. Now SAMPARC Balgram, Bhaje is only for Girls. All the Girls from SAMPARC Balgram, Shel-Pimpalgaon have been shifted to SAMPARC balgram Bhaje.

Presently there are 115 children with 29 boys (below 10 years) and 86 girls in the balgram. The balgram is under the guidance of Mrs. Ratna Banerjee along with Project Incharge Mr.Paresh Khadilkar.

ACADEMICS: o During the academic year 2009-2010 the centre had 124 children with 61 boys and 63 girls. 4 students have scored above 90% , 8 students have scored above 80%, 24 students have scored above 70%, 37 students have scored above 60%, 33 students have scored above 50%, other students have scored below 50% and all are promoted to next class. o 8 students have appeared for SSC this year but only 3 children have cleared their exam. Mohini Gaikwad has topped in SSC from the balgram by scoring 86%.Other 5 children have scored low in Mathematics and all 5 will be reappearing for one subject. But all 8 children have taken admission for higher education and are enrolled in colleges and along with the college they will be appearing for their backlog.

o Among Intermediate students Saidu who was doing ITI course in Lonavla discontinued the course and he wanted to take up 11th in Science stream and as such SAMPARC has taken

SAMPARC Page 2 admission for him this in year in 11th Science in Anandwan College, Chandrapur. He is staying in the hostel and attending college. Pravin Gosavi who is studying 11th Arts from Walven College, Lonavla has scored 42% in his final exam and is in 12th standard now. o Among senior students Sonali Bhamre (11th in Arts) and Vrushali Sonar (2 year diploma course in Nursing) who are in City College, Baramati have appeared for their final exam, the result is awaited. Shobha Rajput has one backlog in her 12th class final exam she will be reappearing for her Maths paper. Ashwini Gaikwad has scored 68% in her 12th standard and she has taken admission in 1st year BSch (Hotel Management) in AMRO Institute of Hotel Management in Nasik.

HEALTH: o Overall health of all the children is good. o Ganesh Shinde had fractured his hand and was admitted at Saraswati Hospital Lonavla for one day he is doing fine now. o Two children Prasad Kasabe and Rekha Kasabe who joined the center in the month of May 2009 have been admitted to Snehalay Solapur Hospital, Nagar after testing positive for HIV.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: o SAMPARC has always believed in the overall development of the children and as such has laid emphasis on extracurricular activities along with education. o Children from the center performed in cultural program held during Joy of Giving Week at Kesari wada, Narayanpet Pune on Oct 3rd 2009. o Children were given 3 day training in Rappelling & Rifle shooting by Pinnacle Club, Worli from 10th Oct to 13th Oct. Children also enjoyed camp fire. o Mr.Vinay Agarwal & his group from Taco Faurecia, Pune conducted sports &

SAMPARC Page 3 drawing competition for children & children were also shown animation cartoon film. o Annual Sports Competitions were held in SAMPARC Abhinav English Medium School among which 7 boys from Balgram Bhaje received 1st prize, 8 girls received 2nd prize and 4 boys received 3rd prize in Annual Sports Competition. o Children presented a Cultural program during Annual Function of Zilla Parishad School. o Volleyball Competitions were conducted for the children in the balgram. o On 17th January children participated in the Mumbai Marathon;Children were dressed as Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teressa, Bharatmata, Baba Ramdev, Shivaji Maharaj during the marathon. Swapnil Joshi (film actor) participated in the Mumbai Marathon and supported SAMPARC. o On 24th January SAMPARC organized a get together for all the grownup children who have left the SAMPARC who are either married, studying in higher education in Pune, working any other place of . Total 47 senior children of different Balgrams were present with their family members.

On 24th January Adv. Mrunalini Deshmukh organized Orchestra for children - children enjoyed the event. o On 26th January Republic day was celebrated in the Balgram. Sarpanch of Bhaje village hoisted the flag and cultural program was presented by the children. o Friends of Bhaje balgram organized a program for the children in which they explained to the children about "BharatMata."

SAMPARC Page 4 o On February 11th 2010 on the occasion of Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti Chhava Prathishthan and Anant Kala Academy jointly organized Painting Competition for the children. o Children are learning skating on the newly renovated ground. Two volunteers Fillipo & Francesco taught Skating to children. o During the summer vacation the children were taken to SAMPARC Children’s Holiday Home, at Ganpatipule, in Kokan for 5 days. The children had enjoyed a lot. o Interested children are learning Music, tabla and harmonium for weekly 3 days from music teacher in the balgram. o Volunteer from HELP Foundation Mrs. Medha Karmarkar along with her daughter Sonali was in the balgram with the children for 10 days and they taught children drawing, sketching and coloring. The children had a nice time and had a good learning experience. o Children enjoyed all the Cultural & National festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi, Dassera, Diwali, Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, Independence Day, and Republic Day with great enthusiasm.

THE HIGHLIGHT AND THE MOST ENJOYED EVENT OF THE YEAR FOR THE CHILDREN WAS CHILDREN’S DAY CELEBRATION ON 14TH NOVEMBER WHICH WAS ORGANISED BY RUCHIKA WOMENS CLUB, MUMBAI:

Ruchika Club had organized ‘’Jhoola Masti’’ program for the children of SAMPARC Bhaje balgram on the occasion of Childrens Day on 14th November 2009. The program was started after paying respects to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru by the Founder Director of SAMPARC Shri Amitkumar Banerjee, Founder of Ruchika Club Mrs. Pushpa Kejariwal, Mrs. Asha Jhunjhunwala, Mrs. Kiran Arya President, Chairperson (Charity) & Trustee of SAMPARC Mrs. Ratna Banerjee.

SAMPARC Page 5 All the children were given new T-shirts, Jeans Pant, Shoes, Socks, Cap, Towels, Compass Box, Pencil box, Chocolates & toiletry items by Ruchika Club. Children wore new clothes & participated in the Jhoolamasti.

In this Jhoolamasti Mela the children enjoyed Mickey Slider, Jumping Jack, and Car-go- Round, Jhula Horse, & camel rides which were the main attraction for children. The children enjoyed playing different games like Snake & Ladder, Shooting, etc. and along with the games. The children were taught different activities like making photo frames, gift bags, etc. according to their age to encourage their talent.

The children were treated to a variety of food like Bhelpuri, Pani Puri, Pav Bhaji, Ice-Cream, Pop Corn, Cake, Chana Bhatura, Candy etc.

Jhoolamasti program was successful because of meticulous planning & combined effort of the Convener Mrs. Alka Sanghai, Mrs. Sujata Kemka, Ms. Riddhi Agarwal and all Members of Ruchika Women’s Club along with SAMPARC Vice President Dr.Lalit Chokhani.

LOCAL COMMITTEE:

SAMPARC Bhaje Balgram Local Committee is functioning under the head Mr.Deepak Hulale with other Members. Dr.Naveen Prabhu is involved with the committee to keep control over the bank transactions. Adv.Ranjana Bhosale, Rtn.Santosh Khandge, Sarpanch Shri. Arun Kale along with other Members actively participate to take care and protection of children’s of this balgram.

ADARSH GRUHMATA AWARD:

SAMPARC Page 6 Sakaal Social Foundation, Smt.Chandrakala Kishorilal Goyal Foundation and Kohinoor Group honored 25 Housemothers working in different NGO’s for their selfless service to orphan and needy children. Smt.Ragini Maiskar, Sadanmata of SAMPARC balgram, Bhaje was one among the awardees who was awarded “Adarsh Gruhmata Award” (Ideal Housemother). Ragini Aai is working for the children of SAMPARC since 5 years and along with taking care of her sadan she has always been in service of children who were not well or who were hospitalized . Ragini Aai has taken care of sick children and has always ensured to be beside them and give them support and get them back to normal life.

FUTURE REQUIREMENT:

It is important to Bhaje Balgram to have fencing for the safety of the girl’s inmates where financial support is required. Apart from that renovation of old children’s home is essential.

CASE STUDY:

Abhijit Adsule: Abhijit is 8 years old boy and he was admitted in SAMPARC Balgram Bhaje 2 years back. At the time of admission he was very aggressive, arrogant and had a careless attitude. He could not concentrate much on studies and had no interest in studying. Many complaints were received from his class teachers and housemothers. When counselor started the game of behavioral approach therapy named as crazy 14, we found so many qualities in Abhijit’s behavior. In this game he was given the responsibility. Abhijit was declared a weekly leader of all children. Rapid changes were observed in his behavior. He used his aggressive nature in right way on counseling him for positive purpose. The mistakes that he used to perform earlier were now checked by others, so he could understand what were the problems caused. He is now well disciplined and good in studies. The process of correction took about 4 months.

Positive changes occured in Abhijit’s Behavior below;

- Shouldering Responsibility - Controlling others - Concentrating on study.

SAMPARC Page 7 One hidden talent of his was noticed, he was very good at drawing. An art gallery was organised and he won the 1st prize in drawing competition which was arranged by Anant Drawing Committee and Chhawa Foundation, he also scored 67% in his 4th class.
