The Meet and Greet night was an initiative of the Queensland Branch Management Committee to welcome new members to the QLD Branch and to thank the members who campaigned successfully in response to the Government’s proposed Better Access changes.

Australian College of Social Work

The Australian College of Social Work opened for applications on 1 st July 2011. This is a fantastic achievement for our organisation and is one that will see our profession gaining further recognition in the wider community, the not-for-profit sector and by Government. The College is going to provide social workers who have excellent skills, knowledge, experience and qualifications, far greater recognition for the work they do and enable them to showcase their skills to their employers and clients. Over the coming months the Association will be keeping members informed about activities and events, which will aim to establish a greater profile and presence of the College. The QLD Branch will be working actively with the National Office to try and engage with you to join the College, as the College is designed to recognise, acknowledge and reward the highest professional standards and qualifications of social workers. The AASW Qld Private Practitioners Practice Group (PPPG) is a Practice Group for private social work practitioners seeking to contribute to best practice social work and thriving private practices.

Participation in the PPPG has continued to grow (an average of 20 each meeting and new members being added to the email listing)

Bi- monthly meetings focus on: • continuing professional education • sharing practice issues • business advice, support and education • starting up in private practice • networking • peer supervision and mentoring • private practice issues, including Better Access campaigning, ATAPS and the application of Medicare processes, and accreditation as Mental Health Social Workers.

Additionally, each meeting has a themed discussion led by a guest speaker or a member with expertise in the area.

The Group maintains strong links to AASW QLD and National Office, providing advice to and working with AASW about trends, issues, needs and solutions relevant to private practitioners, their clients and practices.

Jude Covell and Doug Burke represent Qld private practitioners on the National Mental Health Committee Private Practice Sub-Committee.
