BEATS OF YOUR TOWN On the eve of the release of their new album ‘Ocean’s Apart’, Grant McLennan, co-leader of watershed Brisbane pop group, The Go-Betweens, takes the time to grant Robiter an interview. Matthew ‘The Rock Lobbster’ Lobb reports The Clowns Come To Town – Film School Rejections and UQ Librarians Long before Queensland art tangled at a pretty summit with pop music (the years prior to LP wonderworks such as Before Hollywood, Liberty Belle And The Black Diamond Express and 16 Lovers Lane) , one Grant McLennan had been knocked back from film and television school on account of his 16 years. Enrolment in an arts program at the University of Queensland came, therefore, as a sort of edifying compromise. Once at St. Lucia, the undergraduate - a brainy eldest child from rural Queensland - befriended a gracefully mincing eccentric named Robert Forster who played guitar and wrote his own songs. The two bonded over shared tastes in skewered pop culture and spent a lot of time at the Humanities library reading, in import copies of The Village Voice, about emerging bands like Television and Talking Heads. And, I hasten to add, everybody [else] was dead against recording it as well. It just felt like one of the other songs. Because it was so good, I mean, come on The Go-Betweens It was so hooky! It was such a standout. And that was fine by me because I understood that a single had to be treated differently. So it was much more of a studio construction, and maybe the best version of it ever is on the album. It was a nylon-string classical guitar he played the solo on — it might have even been a crappy old guitar of mine that just happened to be lying around. Streets of Your Town has long been identified with Brisbane, and has The Go-Betweens in an advertising campaign by Queensland newspaper the Courier-Mail with the darker lyrics omitted. The Go Between Bridge, spanning the Brisbane The Go-Betweens, is also named after the group. The most important thing I want to say is that Brisbane took it on as their own, so the Brisbane community grabbed it and ran with it, and because of that, for me, the song is about Brisbane. But Amanda will have a different story, and Amanda was a lot closer to Grant than I was.

INTRODUCTION London, 2020 Dear Lindy, You won’t believe what I’ve done: me, the quiet one. I’ve written it down, written you down, told all your stories, tried to capture you in the pages of a book. Some people know about you already, or think they do; you’re sort of famous. Others have never heard of you, but I don’t think it matters either way. This isn’t a rock biography, and although the story of your band, The Go-Betweens, is part of the narrative, the real story is you. Or maybe, in truth, the story is you and me, the arc of a friendship, the imprint one person leaves on another. Do you remember how it began? I do, so clearly: 31 March 1983, backstage at the Lyceum in London. I was in my dressing room sitting in front of the Hollywood- style bulbs surrounding the mirror – uncomfortably bright lights which showed up the tattered glamour of a faded old theatre, dust motes swirling in the air, a worn-out sofa, a carpet that had seen better days, a window that didn’t open, stale air.
