MONOGRAPH OF THE FAMILY MORDELLIDAE (COLEOPTERA) OF NORTH AMERICA, NORTH OF MEXICO' INTRODUCTION THIS monograph is the result of several years of interrupted study, which have been devoted to gathering material and the necessary literature, com- paring aiid identifying specimens from almost every state, and making notes and drawings. It is hoped that the examination of more than twenty thousand specimens from North America, including the old supposed types of Melsheimer and Leconte, in order to make the following account as complete as possible, will be of assistance to other workers in this field. Since the pablication in 1862 of Leconte's Synopsis of the Mordellidae of the United States, very little has been written that is of any help in the identification of specimens. Although several new species have been added by various authors, the system of arrangement made by Leconte
