Abstract: Texas has one of the most diverse orthopteroid assemblages of any state in the , reflecting the varied habitats found in the state. Three hundred and eighty-nine species and 78 subspecies of orthopteroid insects (Blattodea, Mantodea, Phasmatodea, and Orthoptera) have published records for the state of Texas. This is the first such comprehensive checklist for Texas and should aid future work on these groups in this area.

Introduction (Flook and Rowell, 1997). The species are listed alphabetically within families or subfamilies, and Overall, the orthopteroid fauna of North Amer therefore the alphabetical taxonomic listing does ica is fairly well known. However, details of the not imply any phylogenetic relationships within geographic distribution of many orthopteroid spe the subfamily or family. The reference for the cies in the U.S. are not well documented. We have published record is given after the species name compiled the published records of Texas ortho and authority. The alpha is still unclear pteroids, as a basis for future study. Most of these for a few species included in this list, and therefore records have been confirmed through collections additional species may be added in the future as the made by the authors throughout Texas over the last number of taxa is clarified. This checklist is meant 20 years. The study of Texas orthopteroids began in to act as an aid to collectors, collection managers, the mid-nineteenth century and continues today field workers, and other researchers working on with 389 species currently recorded in the state. Texas orthopteroids. This places the Texan orthopteroid fauna as one of the most diverse of any state. There are 197 species The Orthopteroidea of Texas of known from Texas, compared to the over 200 species from California (Strohecker et Order Blattodea al., 1968), though other orthopteroid groups are more diverse in Texas. The large number of species Farrrily Blattelidae is most likely related to the great variety of habitats found in Texas, from desert in the West, to high Blattella germanica (Linnaeus) (Hebard, 1943b) plains in the North, and subtropical climates in the Blattella uaga Hebard (Atkinson et al., 1991) South. Combined with failure of Pleistocene gla Cariblatta lutea lutea (Saussure and Zehntner) ciers to reach Texas, the state harbors factors (Atkinson et al., 1991) necessary for long term orthopteroid diversifica Cariblatta lutea minima Hebard (Atkinson et al., tion, as seen in its speciose fauna. However, the 1991) number of endemic species is low compared to Chorisoneura texensis Saussure and Zehntner (He California, since many of the habitats (and hence bard, 1943b) species ranges) in Texas extend into the adjacent Euthlastoblatta abortiua Caudell (Hebard, 1943b) states and into Mexico. Euthlastoblatta gemma (Hebard) (Atkinson et al., Supraspecific taxonomy follows Otte (1981, 1991) 1984) and Helfer (1987). Tridactylids are placed in Isch.noptera deropeltiformis (Brunner) (Hebard, following tradition, though recent molec 1943b) ular data suggest their placement within 36 Vohrme 15, No.1, March, 2001, INSECTA MUNDI
