Joni Mitchell: Both Sides Now Free FREE JONI MITCHELL: BOTH SIDES NOW PDF Malka Marom | 304 pages | 10 Nov 2014 | OMNIBUS PRESS | 9781783055869 | English | London, United Kingdom Both Sides Now | Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame Even when her compositional chops wavered into smooth jazz cheese, her lyrical Joni Mitchell: Both Sides Now was sharp as steel. But an icon is allowed some indulgence. But these were some bitter sweets to receive. Mitchell runs through ten jazz covers and recontextualizes two of her old hits in a more orchestral tone. The concept on display is a typical one for Mitchell, soft flirtations with a new flame, fantastic courtship, a sparking relationship, fights, depression, alcohol, tears. Her smoky voice, by this point, has fully transformed into a lounge singer coo, years of cigarette smoke being expelled along with the sobs stuck in her throat. These might not be her words, but they still stick like a knife in the gut. And, of course, she accepts every time, never learning. Joni Mitchell - Both Sides Now Ex-husband Larry Kleinwho serves as co-producer and musical director, explains in his liner notes that Joni Mitchell intended to tell the story of a "modern" romantic relationship in the songs, most of which come from the '30s and '40s. If so, her concept of a modern relationship is very troubled -- most of the selections are unhappy love songs. Vince Mendoza 's arrangements -- a third of them played by a gigantic piece orchestra, a third by a regular-size orchestra, and a third by a swing-style big band -- often suggest the oceanic sweep and serious, melancholy tone of film noir movie music. They also do a lot of Mitchell 's work for her. As a singer, she has never had much projection or power, but she is a master of phrasing and tone. Mitchell often sounds like an alternate Billie Holidaywith the breathiness and note decay characteristic of later Holidayif none of her delayed timing. The album traces the progress of the modern relationship through Mitchell's orchestral renditions of classic jazz songs. The orchestra was arranged and conducted by Vince Mendoza. In the liner notes, co-producer Larry Klein describes the album as "a programmatic suite documenting a Joni Mitchell: Both Sides Now from initial flirtation through optimistic consummation, metamorphosing into disillusionment, ironic despair, and finally resolving in the philosophical overview of acceptance and the probability of the cycle repeating itself". A limited run of copies was released on February 8,in chocolate box packaging for Valentine's Day with several lithographs of Mitchell paintings. A jewel-case edition was released on March 20, On tour, Mitchell performed the songs in the same sequence as the album, but she opened with the overture "Nuages", the first movement from Nocturnesan orchestral suite composed by Claude Debussy. Although the music sets a romantic mood, Joni Mitchell: Both Sides Now use of this piece can be seen as a pun since Clouds is the name of the album on which Joni Mitchell: Both Sides Now song "Both Sides, Now" made its appearance. She is a popular music superstar, and has been since the early 1970s. Surprisingly, considering Mitchell’s Jstatus in the music world, she has often said that for her, painting is primary, music and writing secondary. Regarding Mingus, her 1979 jazz album, she commented that with it she “was trying to become the Jackson Pollock of music.” In a 1998 interview Mitchell reflected, “I think of myself as a painter who writes music.”1 In our era, when many critics and philosophers view interarts relationships with suspicion, it is remarkable that Mitchell persists so vigorously in creating work that involves multiple arts. To consider Mitchell’s art as the productions of a multi-talented person does not get us far with the works themselves, since this approach immediately invokes the abstractions and speculations of psychology. On the other hand, postmodernism has taught us that there is no absolute, tran- scendent meaning available as content for various forms. In the face of such strong objections to coalescing arts, Mitchell insists through her works that her art is intrinsically multidisciplinary and needs to be understood as such. Interarts relationships have been studied at least since Aristotle decreed that the lexis, the words, takes precedence over the opsis, the spectacle, of drama. Although recognized as being distinct, the arts have also commonly been discussed as though they are analogous.

In the space of nine months, the Brazilian artist mourned the deaths of her father and mother while also celebrating the birth of her first child. But she could count on the support of her husband and producer Larry Klein, who encouraged her to keep working on her album "Tide" which finds her emphasizing for the first time her own original songs sung in English. "I was just not in the mood to go and write songs and he was fundamental really to getting me to the piano and the guitar and to say, 'Keep going,' because music will be in my life no matter what," said Souza of the difficult time, from 2008 to 2009. "It was a tough period to go through with so many emotions and I started using the music ... as a place of comfort to lull and soothe myself." Now "Tide" is up for a Grammy on Jan. 31, making it the fourth of her eight albums nominated for best jazz vocal album over the past decade. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.
