Congregation Bnai Yeshurun CBY Plans Shabbat Congregation Bnai Yeshurun Weekly Shabbat Announcements March 8-15, 2019 Shabbat Pekudei Shabbat Times CBY Plans Shabbat “Orah v’Simcha” To Enhance the Joy of Chodesh Adar Candle Lighting 5:34 The Talmud (Ta’anit 29a) urges us to increase “joy” with the advent of the month in which we celebrate Mincha & Kabbalat Shabbat 5:40 Purim, but does not prescribe specific activities or modalities. HaRav Moroccan mincha 5:40 Chaim Shmuelevitz, zt”l, legendary Rosh Yeshiva of Mir, advocated dedicating extra hours to learn Torah, thereby “adding joy” to the Kids Mishna Shiur 8:00 month.     Lifeboat Ethics Parshiyot Behar Bechukotai - 57811 One of the great moral and ethical scenarios debated by philosophers, ethicists and spiritual leaders alike is a category of decision making known as “lifeboat ethics,” a term coined by the ecologist Garrett Hardin in a 1968 article titled “Tragedy of the Commons.” In this article, he described the following scenario: A lifeboat that can hold 60 passengers has room for 10 more people, but 100 people are waiting to be saved. If the lifeboat takes on everyone, all the passengers will drown; if the boat takes on no one, the current passengers will live; if it takes on an additional ten passengers, they will survive as well, but the journey will become more risky, and difficult decisions will have to be made as to who should be saved. These questions are not merely thought experiments. At first I thougt it was a joke. This must be a spam email message. NYBC...... an orthodox Jewish choir, to perform in front of the world, and to be viewed by millions of people live, on many consecutive AGT shows, and over a period of a year’s time. When I called the phone number, I realized it wasn’t a joke. Carter Palmer, the recruiter for AGT was dead serious. She saw us online and wanted us, a frum orthodox choir, to join AGT, and inspire the world.....There was one catch...we needed to perform clean cut secular songs like (you fill in the blank)! I said, “Carter, we are an Orthodox Jewish choir. I don’t see the parents, or the schools that they are coming from, going for the idea of their children singing secular songs, on live T.V. and the web. Summit (Tufts University), Chair, Respondent As early as the 1830s Orthodox Jewish leaders denounced the United States as a land inhospitable to Judaism. But in the aftermath of the Holocaust the Hasidic community in America began to thrive to an extent that could never have been predicted. As a community, Hasidim have accumulated wealth and represent an important voting bloc. The community has also seen drastic changes in lifestyle due to the influence and increasing use of media such as radio, television, and the Internet; and due to exposure to the world beyond the eruv. This panel takes as a fulcrum the mid- twentieth century to discuss how social, technological, and economic opportunities have affected musical practices. GIVING NEW LIFE TO THE NIGUN: BEN ZION SHENKER IN HIS AMERICAN CONTEXT Gordon Dale (Hebrew Union College) As stakeholders in the Haredi community debate the boundaries of “kosher music,” the composer Ben Zion Shenker (1925–2016) is frequently depicted in the discourse as the pinnacle of musical authenticity and respectability. This paper unravels how Shenker came to be an emblem of Hasidic cultural continuity and ideal practice, despite his American nationality and his participation in musical activities that ran so contrary to communal norms that they required rabbinic dispensation. Drawing from personal interviews conducted with Shenker, I examine the ways that he benefited from the opportunities that his American context offered, and, following Erich Nunn’s work on “sounding the color line,” I contextualize Shenker’s place in Haredi race-based discourses of musical propriety.
