SENIOR CLASS

The Seniors are now in a position to look back i w • 'MR* on everything that the gates of high school life have revealed to them. They remember events— winning the float contest as sophomores, planning the Prom in their Junior year, and electing the Homecoming Queen and her court this year. But they also remember less tangible aspects of their high school years. They have matured in knowl edge, in responsibility, and in friendship. With many significant memories of their experiences, the seniors are prepared to face the challenges of the future.

WALK TOGETHER, TALK TOGETHER This year we were fortunate to have two foreign exchange students with us on the American Field Service program. Anette Plahte from Hovik Farms, Norway, who lived with the James F. Kurtz family, arrived in the heat of August; and in January, Susan Fr,eedman, who stayed with the Benjamin F. Buckner family, came from Johannes burg, South Africa. The American Field Service is an organization that selects students from America to visit foreign lands, and also students from other continents to make America their home for one year. The stu dents cross the seas by boat or air and spend about three days in New York City at the Ameri can Field Service Headquarters. Then they are dispersed to enter their new homes and commu nities. At the end of their visit they are again joined together in small groups to take the "bus trip." The caravans of three or four buses travel Susan and her hostess, Charlotte throughout the United States, allowing the stu Anette presents Susan at pep rally. Buckner. dents to see many parts of the country and meet many people from each section. The two-week trip ends in Washington, D. C, with a handshake from the President. Anette and Mrs. Kurtz Anette indicates her home in Norway. prepare for Christmas. This year as members of the Senior Class, Anette and Susan have joined in many activities. Varsity and intramural sports events, club meet ings, and other Americanized school functions have found both students participating and eager. They have not only enjoyed our activities but have enriched them with their ideas. These ideas we have gained not only from the formal speeches we have heard them make, but even more from the friendly talks we have shared with them. The American Field Service has offered us this year two wonderful and unforgettable friends. But it has also offered us the opportunity to be ambassadors for America, and them to be am bassadors for their nations. As is explained by Sanskrit . . . "Walk together, talk together, O ye peoples of the Earth, for then and only then shall ye have peace." Page Fifty-five

Student Council

Student Council consists of the class officers and home room representatives who are working as a student organization which discusses problems affecting the student body. Bexley's council this year was headed by Edward Pritchett, president; Joel Brandt, vice-president; and Lynn Elsass, secretary-treasurer. Mr. David Weis served as faculty advisor and supervised the meetings and functions sponsored by Student Council.

"My Fair Ladies" was the theme of this year's annual Homecoming Dance sponsored by the council. Homecoming festivities, including the bonfire, float contest, and parade, were also planned by the organization.

This year Student Council members were in charge of the popcorn and apple machines. Popcorn was sold at the football, basketball, and baseball games, while the apple machine was of service in the lounge to all students. Both ma chines provided a great source of income for the council.

Representatives to the newly formed Area Student Council were Mary Jane Chittenden, Dan Levoff, and Edward Pritchett. This is an organization to pro mote better inter-school relations and to provide for an exchange of ideas among its members.

Christmas time found Student Council members collecting food to contribute to the Southside Settlement. The annual New Year's Eve dance at the Jeffrey mansion was again sponsored by the council. Other activities throughout the year included financing Christmas hall decorations, revision of the constitution. and donating to the school a tape recorder.

Under the leadership of President Kalitsa Tsitouris, Vice-president Lynn Elsass, and Secretary Marilyn Kurtz, Student Health Council has been quite busy. It sponsored First Aid classes after school. It also led the very successful United Appeal campaign, and sponsored Tuberculosis Tests. An informative movie on cancer was shown to students and their parents in the early spring. The Student Health Council sent several representatives to a conference on lung cancer and sponsored a medical careers day. Miss Margaret Love acted as advisor to the organization and was very pleased with their efforts.

March fifteenth's National Honor Society assem bly honored those students who had excelled in the areas of character, scholarship, leadership, and service throughout their high school careers. Students in the upper sixth of the junior class and the upper third of the senior class are eligible to receive membership into this society. Planned by the society's sponsor, Mrs. Sara Amos, the assembly included speeches about the history and recjuirements of the society given by the ten seniors who had been inducted last year. A reception for relatives of the honored students followed the assembly. This year seventeen seniors joined the ten cho sen last year, and eleven juniors were inducted also. To be chosen as a member in the National Honor Society is the highest honor Bexley High School can bestow, as it selects only those students who have excelled in each of the four principles of the society.

In 1963 the Torch staff attempted to produce a paper that would not only include a coverage of the student activities, but a coverage of students as well. The staff, led by co-editors Harriet Nalty and Steve Ault, strove to develop a paper based on student interest. Through more feature stories and interviews, the Torch produced a paper every stu dent would enjoy. Much planning and hard work go into making a newspaper a success. Every month the Torch staff members met the press deadline after weeks of planning, writing, and layouts. Mrs. Sara Amos gave much to the success of the Torch this year, as in past years. With her guidance, the 1962-63 Torch has met the excellent standards of past Torches. Positions on the staff were Page One, Doug Woodyard and Bob Granat; Page Two, Cindy Levoff; Page Three, Kathy Bidlack; Sports Editor, Barry Thall; Business Managers, Joel Slaven, Phil Magley, and Irv Godofsky; Art Editor, Sherry Christie; and Photographer, David Swedlow. Standing: Judy Danchik, Libby Lemmon, Barbara Koltun. Bexleo Seated: Edward Pritchett, Gail Gertner, Mary Jane Chittenden. This year, as in past years, the Bexleo staff has produced a yearbook with you, the students, in mind. The high standards which the Bexleos of the past have set were our goals this year. We selected the theme "Gateways," through which we have presented our high school year 1962-1963. The addition of class histories, a greater influence of theme, and more informal pictures with original layout patterns were the major improvements in this year's publication. The staff felt that these alterations add interest and give a more detailed account of this year's activities. Gail Gertner as Editor and Mary Jane Chittenden as Associate Editor have put much time and effort into making the 1963 Bexleo a success. Other mem bers of the staff are Edward Pritchett, Advertising Manager; Jeff McClelland, Business Manager; Dody Schwartz, Literary Editor; Pam Bobinson and Shep Kahn, Art Editors; Marilyn Kurtz, Senior Section; Sharky Boberts and Barbara Koltun, Girls' Sports; Judy Danchik, Clubs; Missy Heffernan, Faculty; Jane Gumble and Carole Glick, Classes; Lynne Elsass, Student Government; Janice Brenner, Social Section; and Libby Lemmon, Secretary and Layout Assistant. The debt of gratitude that this year's Bexleo staff owes to Mr. Ralph Howell can never be paid. The time, effort, and guidance which he has self- lessly given to the staff are beyond measure or com .' pare. We thank our adviser, Mr. Howell, for his wonderful help. The Bexleo is your book. We hope that you will enjoy it and through it save the memory of the 1962-63 school year. Page Eighty-three Ifffffffffl
