On February 21, 2017, the Ingham County Parks and Recreation Commission recommended that the Ingham County Board of Commissioners adopt the plan. The plan was adopted by the Ingham County Board of Commissioners on March 28, 2017. Description Regional Context Ingham County is the southeastern most county within the Lansing tri‐county region – with Eaton County to the west and Clinton County to the northwest. This region, which is located in the central portion of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, encompasses 1,700 square miles, with Ingham County claiming 560.7 square miles. In terms of land, 90% of the tri‐county region is classified as rural or small town. Approximately 85% of Ingham County is rural. The other N O T IN L counties surrounding Ingham County are Shiawassee to the C M A H northeast, Livingston to the east, Washtenaw to the southeast, ATON G E IN Jackson to the south, Calhoun to the southwest and Ionia to the northwest. Major cities within this region are Lansing, Jackson, Ann Arbor and Battle Creek. 2018 Ingham County Comprehensive Parks Master Plan 1 Population statistics indicate that Ingham County has a larger share of the population base than Eaton or Clinton Counties. According to Census estimates for 2015, the population in the tri‐ county region was 472,276 with 61% (286,085) found within Ingham County. Population in 2000 was 447,728 for the region, indicating an increase in population of 18,638 or 5.5% between 2000 and 2015. The Ingham County population rose by 6,765 or 2.4% between 2000 and 2015. They are as follows: Cities: East Lansing, Lansing, Leslie, Mason & Williamston Villages: Dansville, Stockbridge & Webberville Charter Townships: Delhi, Lansing & Meridian Other Townships: Alaiedon, Aurelius, Bunker Hill, Ingham, Leslie, Locke, Leroy, Onondaga, Stockbridge, Vevay, Wheatfield, White Oak & Williamstown Unincorporated Communities: Haslett, Holt & Okemos Demographics Understanding the characteristics of the population being served is helpful when evaluating parks and recreation facilities and needs. Table 1 provides a comparison of key demographic data for Ingham County as compared to Clinton County, Eaton County, and Michigan. Ingham County Residents are younger than the other communities.
