Influence of Climate Variability on Water Resources in the Bulgarian South Black Sea Basin
Regional Hydrological Impacts of Climatic Change—Hydroclimatic Variability (Proceedings of symposium S6 held during the Seventh IAHS Scientific Assembly at Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, 81 April 2005). IAHS Publ. 296, 2005. Influence of climate variability on water resources in the Bulgarian South Black Sea basin BERNARDO LIZAMA RIVAS1 & IVANKA KOLEVA-LIZAMA2 1 Department of Hydrology, National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology, 66 Tsarigradsko Shosse, 1784 Sofia, Bulgaria [email protected] 2 Department of Ecology, University of Forestry, 10 Kliment Ohridski, 1796 Sofia, Bulgaria Abstract The South Black Sea basin in Bulgaria was selected as the study area. The region is of agricultural and forest importance for the country. The irrigation water demand increases in summer when most of the rivers in the region have low flows. The purpose of this research is to assess the variability of hydro-meteorological conditions in the study catchments. Long-term data (1952–2002) from some hydro-meteorological gauging stations, which are located in the study catchments, were used. In order to evaluate the influence of climatic factors on the water resources, the warm and humid conditions were analysed. Application of several statistical tests demonstrated that there are changes in runoff which are not caused by man’s activity. The features of the variations of these hydro-meteorological elements and their inherent trends are determined. The results of this study show that runoff has decreased considerably all over the study region in recent years. The significant tendency to a gradual reduction of runoff in the region is due to considerably decrease of the precipitation and increase of temperature. -
Nominalia of the Bulgarian Rulers an Essay by Ilia Curto Pelle
Nominalia of the Bulgarian rulers An essay by Ilia Curto Pelle Bulgaria is a country with a rich history, spanning over a millennium and a half. However, most Bulgarians are unaware of their origins. To be honest, the quantity of information involved can be overwhelming, but once someone becomes invested in it, he or she can witness a tale of the rise and fall, steppe khans and Christian emperors, saints and murderers of the three Bulgarian Empires. As delving deep in the history of Bulgaria would take volumes upon volumes of work, in this essay I have tried simply to create a list of all Bulgarian rulers we know about by using different sources. So, let’s get to it. Despite there being many theories for the origin of the Bulgars, the only one that can show a historical document supporting it is the Hunnic one. This document is the Nominalia of the Bulgarian khans, dating back to the 8th or 9th century, which mentions Avitohol/Attila the Hun as the first Bulgarian khan. However, it is not clear when the Bulgars first joined the Hunnic Empire. It is for this reason that all the Hunnic rulers we know about will also be included in this list as khans of the Bulgars. The rulers of the Bulgars and Bulgaria carry the titles of khan, knyaz, emir, elteber, president, and tsar. This list recognizes as rulers those people, who were either crowned as any of the above, were declared as such by the people, despite not having an official coronation, or had any possession of historical Bulgarian lands (in modern day Bulgaria, southern Romania, Serbia, Albania, Macedonia, and northern Greece), while being of royal descent or a part of the royal family. -

Bourgas District-Pomorie from Tourism Perspective
BULGARIA- SOUTH -EASTERN REGION- BOURGAS DISTRICT-POMORIE FROM TOURISM PERSPECTIVE GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION, BORDERS, SEA PORTS On south the South-Eastern Region borders on the Republic of Turkey by three Cross Border Checking Points: Burgas, Tzarevo and Malko Tarnovo. On east the region is wide open to the Black sea through the 8 ports - Burgas, Ahtopol, Tzarevo, Sozopol, Pomorie, Nesebar, Rosenetz and Ribno Port, BUT two major ports on the Black Sea is Varna and Burgas. Both act as East-West transport corridor gateways of Bulgaria. Port facilities are generally adequate for bulk commodities, but lack facilities for special handling. Rehabilitation of both ports is planned. Bourgas is the second largest port in Bulgaria, and is in close proximity to Serbia, FYROM (Former Yugoslavia Republic of Macedonia), Greece and Turkey. The Bulgarian railways network and the Bulgarian national road system link Bourgas with major industrial inland points of the Balkans. Bourgas offers a large port facility, which can accommodate various ships and is close to a modern commercial airport. The Army has an agreement with the Bulgarian military to use it’s recreation facility located about 20 kilometers from the port, which they use to house task force personnel. Using this port provides the Commander-in-Chief, U.S. European Command, with another choice by providing another access point into the Balkans. Previously, KFOR used two ports for cargo movement supporting its troops in the U.S.-controlled sector of Kosovo—Thessaloniki, Greece and Bremerhaven, Germany. In port of Nessabar yearly are coming in big cruise ships, they make approximately 50 stops in this port per year. -
