Stephens here makes use of traditional motifs. for the purpose of creating a psychological study. These stories are no doubt an attempt at something quite distinct from what actually came to absorb his mind - Irish saga material. It may to my mind be regretted that he did not write more short stories of the same kind as the ones in Etched in Moonlight, the most poignant of which is "Hunger," a starvation story, the tragedy of which is intensified by the lucid, objective style. Unfortunately the scope of this article does not allow a treat ment of the rest of Stephens' work, which I hope to discuss in another essay. I have here dealt with some aspects of the two middle periods of his career, and tried to give significant glimpses of his life in Paris, and his .subsequent years in Dublin. In 1915 he left wartime Paris to return to a revolutionary Dub lin, and in 1925 he left an Ireland suffering from the after effects of the Civil War. -

As a small nation with a less prominent contribution to world literature, the Irish have benchmarked some of their brightest examples in the form of Gaelic writings, and present an outstanding account of oral traditions and oral poetry that have passed down the generations to the contemporary 21st century. Their literature represents various facets of Irish culture, history, and socio-cultural aspects reflected through magical verses of poems, the nature of which has transcended generations and established itself in the history of Europe. Keywords: Irish poetry, European literature, Yeats, Irish culture 1. Introduction Irish poetry is considered one of the oldest and most enriched sources of poetry in Europe. As a small nation with a less prominent contribution to world literature, the Irish have benchmarked some of their brightest examples in the form of Gaelic writings, and present an outstanding account of oral traditions and oral poetry that have passed down the generations to the contemporary 21st century (Aberdeen & Temair, 2005). -

SIDNELL N THE 1899 edition of Poems, Yeats moved "The Wanderings of I Oisin" from the front of the book to the back. 1 Reviewers, he thought, concentrated on the poem merely because it came first, neglecting the rest. 2 The effect of this transposition probably exceeded its aim since critics henceforward tended to treat Yeats's longest poem as an appendix to the Collected Poems. Since the appearance over thirty years ago of Alspach's study of some of the sources of the poem 3 there has been no extended examination of any aspect of "Oisin"; and this despite what seems to be a general re newal of interest in Yeats's early work. A monograph on Yeats's devel opment up to 1900 offers us the assurance that "Alspach's record of direct borrowings does not substantiate a charge of plagiarism," 4 a bizarre comment which has the virtue of getting us nowhere, by contrast with some psychoanalytical comments on some details of the poem which take ·us altogether too far. -

MEMORABLE BARBARITIES AND NATIONAL MYTHS: ANCIENT GREEK TRAGEDY AND IRISH EPIC IN MODERN IRISH THEATRE A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Notre Dame in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Katherine Anne Hennessey, B.A., M.A. ____________________________ Dr. Susan Cannon Harris, Director Graduate Program in English Notre Dame, Indiana March 2008 MEMORABLE BARBARITIES AND NATIONAL MYTHS: ANCIENT GREEK TRAGEDY AND IRISH EPIC IN MODERN IRISH THEATRE Abstract by Katherine Anne Hennessey Over the course of the 20th century, Irish playwrights penned scores of adaptations of Greek tragedy and Irish epic, and this theatrical phenomenon continues to flourish in the 21st century. My dissertation examines the performance history of such adaptations at Dublin’s two flagship theatres: the Abbey, founded in 1904 by W.B. Yeats and Lady Gregory, and the Gate, established in 1928 by Micheál Mac Liammóir and Hilton Edwards. I argue that the potent rivalry between these two theatres is most acutely manifest in their production of these plays, and that in fact these adaptations of ancient literature constitute a “disputed territory” upon which each theatre stakes a claim of artistic and aesthetic preeminence. Partially because of its long-standing claim to the title of Ireland’s “National Theatre,” the Abbey has been the subject of the preponderance of scholarly criticism about the history of Irish theatre, while the Gate has received comparatively scarce academic attention. I contend, however, that the history of the Abbey--and of modern Irish theatre as a whole--cannot be properly understood except in relation to the strikingly different aesthetics practiced at the Gate. -
